24.01.2022 I've been quietly working on developing a completely new collection of vessels, inspired by Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), a renowned Finnish architect/designer. Alvar "...forged a remarkable synthesis of romantic and pragmatic ideas. His work reflects a deep desire to humanize architecture through an unorthodox handling of form and materials that was both rational and intuitive." MoMA I particularly like how Alvar and his first wife Aino Aalto, would design buildings, then give sp...ecial consideration for interior surfaces, furniture, lamps and glassware. Making the entire space a complete work of art. This red mouth-blown lead crystal vase was designed by Alvar and has long been an Iittala best seller. Isn't it just the most beautiful shape. I first came across it during a brief trip to Finland around 2006. Not sure what made me think of it recently, but it obviously made a lasting impression on me. Looking forward to more creative exploration.
24.01.2022 Hope to see you Monday

18.01.2022 My brand new whimsical watercolour collection will be available Monday night on the Handmade Exchange Events Page! There were so many steps involved in creating these unique little monoprints. Here's a very brief summary. First, the image outline was printed onto polymer clay using a delicate Moiko silkscreen and black acrylic paint. The image was then hand painted with beautiful soft transparent watercolours. Once carefully cut and cured, the pieces were sealed with liquid p...olymer to protect the paint. Strangely enough, this can be the most difficult part, as the liquid clay needs to be set with a heat gun. Too much heat and the piece burns, not enough and it doesn't cure properly. I still hold my breath during this part. Next, a super thin sheet of textured black clay was attached to the back and wrapped around the sides to create a simple, yet effective frame. Then, back into the oven for a final cure. Ok, I missed a few steps. but hopefully get get the idea.

15.01.2022 Moment of truth! I cut enough slices for two little bowls, before reducing the cane a bit more for earrings! The colours will deepen a little during curing.

08.01.2022 This is an example of my favourite technique, Mokume Gane. First developed in the 17th century by a master Japanese metalworker. The technique was originally used to create elaborate handels and sheaths for swords, during a time when they stopped serving as a weapon and became largely a status symbol. It has has since been adapted for polymer clay! Not sure who first did this, but I'm very grateful.

05.01.2022 Developing a vibrant and uplifing colour palette for my spring/summer collection. I started by collecting lots of ramdom pinterest images that made me smile. Then I gradually culled and collated them into a balanced composition. Today, I will begin mixing and experimenting with coloured polymer clay. Lets see how close I can get and how many times I change my mind..... Colour is deeply personal. I would love to know how you respond to these colours?
05.01.2022 Another great line-up, with two new artisans! So proud to be part of this talented and supportive group!
03.01.2022 Good Morning! I hope everyone has a fun creative day planned. I've been adapting a pottery technique I learnt at Tafe recently for use with polymer clay. I'm constantly amazed by the versatility of this incredible medium. This is my 7th year working with polymer and I'm still discovering completely new things.
02.01.2022 It's been a very long time between posts. I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed with social media, so I took a little break. However I have still been creating! Oh, and don't forget to check out the lovely work now available on the Handmade Exchange Events Page. It was a great market last night.
