24.01.2022 THE CONCRETE IS ALWAYS GREENER That's the saying right.... Well you get what I mean haha. The metro Melbourne wall came down last Sunday and regional was once again aloud into the city and vice versa, so thinking that most of Melbourne would be heading out I thought It would be smart to head in as it would probably be pretty quiet. Well I was right on the money & the city was super quiet & to be honest I really enjoyed walking around the city for the 1st time in ages, I had... breakfast on the Yarra, grabbed a coffee & did some shopping. They always say the grass is always greener & I was pretty excited to be in the concrete jungle for the day & Melbourne is one of the greatest city's in the world. Knowing that I was most likely not going to get any great light I knew I had to find myself a really strong composition to make a shot work & this is what I stumbled upon. Shot at blue hour using the triangle shapes & bridge to lead the eyes into the city & a shutter speed off 1 second to capture the movement of the tram passing over the bridge it made for a pretty cool composition in the end. 24.01.2022 MISSED THE COLOUR BUT THE FLOW WAS PERFECT Been basically 12 months since my last visit to the Pinnacles at Philip Island & this time with a really nice high cloud forecast I was pretty hopefully for a sweet outcome. There was definitely some really nice colour in the sky but it was all behind me or to the far left of this composition I was shooting. I really liked the shine on the perfectly well rounded rocks in the foreground then the curved leading line that the waves cr...eated as they smashed against the shoreline. I decided like usual to stick with my composition rather than chase after the clouds and just hope that it moved across into my frame as I like to get my shot all in camera or at least get my shot as a time blend without moving my camera. I did think the colour would come around & if I moved my camera it would most definitely light up but it never did make it across. Sticking with my composition I knew the flow was enough to make this shot work without the sky although id always love an absolute banger sky it's not always going to happen even with an amazing forecast. 23.01.2022 THE SAND IS ON FIRE Boy oh Boy wowee did this sky erupt with colour at Port Fairy on Tuesday morning. Finally a shot from here that I'm stoked with after trying at least 10 times a year over the last 2 years. Checked the tides the night before & they were perfect at about mid tide meaning that the water would be flowing up to the top of the first Groin but not so far that I could stand on the beach. The only problem was a rubbish forcast with a fair bit of low clouds around... & when I got to this spot it looked about right with a huge band of cloud on the horizon where the sun would be rising. But as you can see in the photo that made no difference as the sky absolutely exploded for about 3 min & you could imagine I was pretty chuffed. I would usually edit and post the shot with the most flow going around the Groin but this time it was the wet sand reflecting the sky above just after a wave receded back into the ocean that caught my eye. 22.01.2022 I COULD DEFO LIVE THE TINY HOME LIFE.... NO WORRIES! This little tiny home in the Grampians called Shacky was so perfect. The view was amazing, it had a fire pit, fridge, gas cooker, heater/aircon, amazing bathroom and of course a really comfortable bed. It basically had everything you needed for a weekend away including some influencer style props like hats, umbrella and lantern... yes they really had thought of everything here at Shacky. Probably the best part was it was do...g friendly and I love bringing my crazy little guy away on these adventures anytime I can and he has a ball. Literally had a ball here as he found 4 balls under the tiny home so if ya looking at a place to go when we are aloud to get away again I highly recommend this place and I'll 100% be checking out the other 2 Shacky locations in Vic once we can explore again. The 1st shot was a nice little composition I found at sunrise using the fork in the tree as a frame then hitting the 10sec timer running to the porch and then trying to act natural The 2nd shot was from the first night when getting home from grabbing some takeaway pizza I noticed a sweet little moon halo. 22.01.2022 TALK ABOUT GOLDEN HOUR!! An oldie from some amazing glow @jake.bolton.photo and I got at one of my favourite locations in New Zealand. I can't wait to return to this spot again as there were so many opportunities for sweet compositions and we only spent the one afternoon here before moving on to the next spot. These sea stacks where so huge and one of the things that makes this spot so unique is the huge beach that is super shallow meaning that the difference between low and ...high tide is a few hundred metres. This makes for some amazing reflections and this particular composition drew me in because of the texture in the sand leading your eyes directly to the sea stacks and there reflections.... 22.01.2022 I HAD NO IDEA THAT VIC HAD ITS OWN LEGOLAND!! Last weekend the weather across most of Victoria was looking pretty wet & wild. Especially on the coast so I jumped on Campermate & put in the dog friendly filter & found this free camp only 1.5h from home. With the word cave in the name & the weather up the way looking pretty decent it was looking like a winner and this was all done within about 30min before we left in the van. Melville Caves was better than I could have expect...ed I was so surprised how good it was & with some awesome hikes, a sweet camp ground & amazing rock formations all around. If you know Canberra's Legoland then you know what I'm talking about when I say this looks very similar. For this shot I waited till just before the sun set to get that golden light shooting though the gaps in the rocks & used the stairs as a nice little leading line. 21.01.2022 STARTRAILS ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD! After shooting the rising milkyway over Gibsons Steps and already being a little high in the sky to begin with I wanted to make the most of a relatively clear night here and had nothing better to do so I decided to shoot some startrails. It was an absolutely freezing night and with cloud's rolling in from the right, everything starting to get wet from the dew and myself freezing my balls of I decided 1h was about all I could muster so this... is what 1h of shooting looks like at around 21mm. 21.01.2022 SPOTLIGHT ON How perfect is that light coming though & just lighting that one little mound for me to stand on for this epic little nature selfie. This is an idea I had for a drone shot basically as soon as I got my drone & I went here literally just to pull the drone out to capture this composition & fresh perspective that I'd not seen on the gram yet. The GPS signal was so weak here and for obvious reasons as it's in the middle of a rainforest & I couldn't get the drone any... higher than 30m & couldn't work out if it could be overridden or not so 30m max height it was. Do you know how to fix that issue? The shot turned out pretty sweet in the end though from way back behind that amazing green tree that sits diagonal & I've never noticed that tiny little fall just above the main drop of the waterfall... that's pretty cool! This shot was a composition I was eyeing off for ages and went here for sunrise at least 5 plus times over about a 12 month period to try and capture it. 18.01.2022 I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THE RAIN FOR THIS ONE! After visiting this waterfall last year while it wasn't in full flow but could definitely see the amazing potential it had I'd marked it down as a spot I really wanted to get back to after some substantial rain. I visited it once this year but it still wasn't wet enough and I knew I missed a few opportunities while being locked down with a lot of rain and thought I'd probably be waiting till next year now. But after some solid rain... on the GOR on the weekend I thought I'd go for a drive on Monday with fingers crossed I wasn't to late to see it in all its glory. When I walked over the little bridge I seen it & I was stoked as it was looking bloody beautiful I had the place all to myself the whole time and I spent a good 1h taking it all in & hunting for compositions but in the end it was one of the 1st few shots I fired off that I went with. I've definitely got one or two other keepers as well so you may see them later on down the track. After this I drove to Teddy's Lookout for Sunset & spent the night near Wye River. After an amazing sunrise I went for a kayak down the St George River and then legged it back home to get some more work done so I can maybe get away again this weekend. 17.01.2022 GOING STRAIGHT TO THE POOL ROOM!! After shooting sunrise and getting a touch of colour but some really nice fast moving clouds we were about to hike back down when the sun broke though for a brief 5min of absolutely stunning light. It's amazing how light can absolutely make or break a photo & while shooting some video over the hut the sun broke through & I knew I needed to get some shots before it disappeared again & I'm so glad I did as this shot is one of my favourite shots... from the year.. The light was perfect & with myself in the frame walking towards the hut it really gives it that sense of loneliness (even though @janbreckwoldt_photography is lurking in the bushes somewhere ) that you would expect from an isolated hut on top of a mountain which was something I was struggling to capture from the ground. Stoked with how it came out & that I managed to get something I really loved from a spot I've been wanting to visit for a long time which makes that long drive to Mansfield & 40km of corrugated dirt road to the top that took me 4h to clean out of my van when I got home all worth it. The shot itself is made up of 15 shots in total.... 3 rows of 5 bracketed shots in a vertical panorama if that makes sense. 17.01.2022 SUCH AN AMAZING SPOT TO HAVE ALL TO OURSELVES! This bad boy was from back in 2018 on my 2nd trip to NZ with @jake.bolton.photo After a day of waterfall chasing through The Catlins we ended up here just after dark and managed to get a little bit of milkyway action in between small break's in the clouds. As we were shooting there were some crazy sounds coming from the beach which turned out to be 2 massive seals play fighting or doing something else I'm not quite sure . We got... up for sunrise and it was looking pretty bleak with what looked like zero chance of a decent sky but luckily for us the sun managed to break though a small gap on the horizon and pow it was stunning! 16.01.2022 COULDN'T GET THERE BY FOOT SO I FLEW!! I'm always keen to get right in on the action for my shots to make them as dramatic as I possibly can and I was really keen to get out onto these rocks & shoot some nice foreground. I did try but as I got closer the rocks & gaps between them where the water was flowing past were a hell of a lot bigger than expected & certainly couldn't leap across the gaps. But then I had an idea I have a drone so why don't I just fly it over & down the...n hover 1m or so above the spot I wanted to get to in the 1st place. It will definitely not be the same as you can't really get a good idea of the scale of those rocks down there as they are actually pretty darn big. But at least it might be an interesting & fresh perspective if it actually works that is. So while standing safely to the side I flew my drone across and the down and hovered about 1-2m above the fast flowing river. I started with a top down shot at 2 sec then slowly worked my way up vertically shooting around 8 shots just to make sure I had plenty of room to stitch the pano in post. 16.01.2022 A BURNER TO WARM YOU UP!! So bloody cold today it even snowed in @visitballarat for I little bit today This shot was from a couple of weekends ago when I got home from a camping trip at Rocklands, unpacked my stuff and sat on the couch only to see some crazy red glow coming through the loungeroom window. If you know me at all you know I couldn't resist getting straight up and racing down to the lake to see if I could catch the colour. I only just made it in time to fire of... about 3 shots before the colour faded away and it was windy as hell and rough as guts so suprisingly had the very popular photography spot all to myself. The colour and clouds to the right were absolutely crazy but by the time I set up for that comp I'd missed the best of it so I'll have to save that one for another day. 16.01.2022 THE RAZORBACK IS ABSOLUTELY EPIC! The Razorback is one of the coolest sea stacks along the Great Ocean Road & a spot I've wanted to photograph for ages. It is accessed from the Loch Ard Gorge carpark and just and extra 5min walk from the Tom & Eva lookout & I'm guessing a lot of people who visit here end up missing out on it without realising it's just down the end a little farther. Heading down here late on Saturday I didn't think I would make it in time for sunset at Wreck ...Beach so I had a last minute plan to shoot here instead. It was a surprisingly warm (warm for this time of year anyway) & sunny afternoon with a really good cloud forecast predicted but I was really here for Astro so anything else was a goin'to be a bonus. The sky definitely put on a show but unfortunately mostly everywhere except where my camera was pointing but it was still pretty sweet anyway & I did get a little bit of colour. 16.01.2022 GOLDEN GOODNESS x 1000!! When I first started out with a DSLR about 4 years ago a mate who owns a farm told me about this big dead tree that was in one of his paddocks. 3 years ago this was the 1st canola field that I shot and I've been waiting for the canola to be planted back in that field ever since. Fun fact... they rest the paddocks for a few years in between growing the canola again in the same field that's why every year I'm out hunting for a new tree in Canola. This ...spot is just down the road from where I live & this year it's back surrounding the big dead tree & will save me a lot of time & fuel haha. The best part is knowing the farmer & that I've got full rockstar access to the paddock to get some shots for him & myself. If ya seen my story's on the weekend I was out here getting some drone shots of the big sprayer but I didn't think I would get the light I wanted so I hadn't planned on sticking around at all. 14.01.2022 A SCENE OUT OF A FAIRYTALE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!! Get a load of the spot just outside Daylesford, Victoria. @joshdavis23_ showed me this spot a few weeks back & I don't even think I could find my way back here again if I tried as it was literally in the middle of nowhere through a maze of dirt roads weaving in & out of pine plantations. After a pretty decent drive from the edge of Daylesford in the middle of the bush is this amazing old mud brick structure surrounded by t...his random patch of flowers that are only in this one particular spot that's it. 12.01.2022 HAPPY WATERFALL MONDAY EVERYONE Lower Kalimna falls is one of my favourite waterfalls in the otways & on this trip I was hoping to capture Henderson Falls in full flow but it was just a little dry for my liking & with Kalimna being near by I think id go check it out while I was in the area. The walk out was pretty bloody muddy so I knew It would be looking pretty sweet & I was in luck as there was just enough flow to get a shot. Sometimes when I'm out I'll cheekily dress up... a foreground with some leaf's or something of that nature around just to give it some more interest.... I like to call it playing dress ups But this time nature actually did it all for me and I swear I didn't place these leaves here they were there when I got here how good is that. The leaves gave the comp some interest as the log draws your eyes towards the amazing waterfall. This particular day was pretty hectic on the old boots as I started off with a sunrise at Eagle Rock followed by a hike to, Henderson Falls, Lower Kalimna, Mariners Falls and then sunset down on Wreck Beach & if you've ever been down there you know it involves a few stairs & a bit of a walk. 12.01.2022 NOTHING LIKE A WACK ON THE ASS BY A MUTTON-BIRD TO WAKE YOU UP IN THE MORNING! Good old Griffith Island lighthouse in Port Fairy is always an interesting walk out in the dark & it must be Mutton-bird season at the moment cos there were hundreds of them as I was walking the 2km to the lighthouse. The birds take flight just before sunrise & tend to use the walking path as a runway for takeoff but these birds are so awkward on land & until they get up to speed & in the air they ...are useless but once flying they are absolute guns in the air. So as I'm walking out along the path I kept getting struck from behind by awkward ass birds trying to take off haha super weird but quite funny. Anyway.... So for the shot like usual I was drawn to the flowing water as a leading line towards my subject & after getting my boots wet I moved around & found plenty of other compositions around as there really is endless opportunities here all year round & it's constantly changing. 12.01.2022 YOU'VE GOT TO GET YA FEET WET FOR THE GOOD SHOTS! Shooting at one of Vic's most popular waterfalls that is also a really easy walk to get to can make it pretty busy on a weekend. So this particular time I set of early so I would arrive just after sunrise. Doing this meant I had this amazing place all to myself for a good 1.5h and was able to take my time looking for good compositions not needing to worry about other people around me. It was so nice just taking in the sound of... the water and walking up and down the river without getting weird looks by onlookers wondering why I'm standing in the middle of the freezing water. All the best and unique shots are the ones you have to work for and this little comp was in one of the deepest parts of the river but with my water boots on it was no drama really. I did miss a nice sunrise on route to Hopetoun Falls that morning but having the place to myself for over an hour made it worthwhile and as I left the carpark was overflowing with people complaining about how busy it was and there weren't enough carparks... 10.01.2022 THE CRAZIEST SUNRISE I'VE EVER SEEN! This is a place in NZ that I'd driven past multiple times not knowing it was even there but when I found out about it it was high on my list for a stopover on my October roadtrip last year. This particular morning I was camping at a caravan park around 2h away and when I checked the forecast for this spot it was looking very promising so I set my alarm for 3am and headed off down the twisting roads of Arthur's Pass to get to Castle Hill fo...r sunrise. This shot is from up near the top of the hill looking back towards the carpark and boy was this one hell of an insanely epic sunrise! The sky lit up in all directions and after I got the composition I set up for which was actually facing the opposite direction I proceed to buzz around all over the place like a fly you've just sprayed with fly spray getting shot after shot of the amazing clouds rolling over the mountains. 09.01.2022 ESCAPING COVID LIKE She's a tad stressful launching the drone from the kayak in the middle of a body of water as I'm just hoping that it doesn't somehow lose connection and return to home and go for a swim. Fortunately my Mavic Air 2 has been absolutely floorless and I've not had any issues like that at all. This top down shot is minimal & simple but the dark water contrasting the yellow/greens of the reeds and my yellow kayak work really well, plus I really love the texture... of the clouds reflecting in the water. It's a type of shot I've been wanting to do since getting my drone and keen so see what else I'll be able to get launching from my little yellow kayak that I bought form a local trash market for $100. 09.01.2022 A CALMING SCENE OF A LONE TREE IN A PADDOCK... & IN REALITY I WAS BEING MAULED BY MOSQUITOS!! The age old Instagram vs reality scenario where the amazing scenery in front of you looks stunning & perfect but really I was dying from an onslaught of a million mosquitos attacking one after the other well I guess that's one way to wake up in the morning hey? Pretty happy with the results from yesterdays sunrise mission before work down at Dog Rocks. After seeing a really nice cl...oud prediction & me not having to work until 10am I could manage a sunrise within about 1 / hours from home so I decided on giving this place a shot. Waking up at 4am & driving towards the coast I could see we were on for some sweet colour with it glowing qh before sunrise already but on arriving the colour looked to be to far to the right but I stuck to my guns on this sweet little comp I found & as a rule I'll always choose a strong comp with less optimal colour over a weak comp with a crazy sky. 07.01.2022 NOW THESE SHEEP ARE LIVIN' I found this epic little spot while searching around my local area on google maps & had it penciled in for a possible Milkyway shoot but when I actually went out to scout the location I couldn't believe my luck that it was completely surrounded by huge fields of golden canola.... I wasn't expecting that but dam I was happy about it! It was a cloudless day with some nice golden hour glow & knew it was perfect to get the drone up in the air for this... one. This was one of the main reasons why I wanted to get a drone again for those blue sky days that I'd usually not be as pumped about getting out & shooting as I definitely prefer cloudy days for sunrise/sunset. I'm loving my DJI Mavic Air 2 as it's so small & lightweight yet definitely packs a pretty dam good camera. 07.01.2022 SHE WAS MOODY! I've had this angle of my favourite peak in mind for the past year or so but never shot it at sunset or sunrise & I've always just headed up to the main viewpoint instead. I had scouted it out once before so this time on a trip up with @reid_formosa I thought I'd show him this particular spot I had in mind for a composition. He loved it as well so we decided to shoot sunset here instead of the typical sunset spot & in this case with theses moody conditions we d...efinitely made the right decision I think. It's a really open area with tall grass and hidden streams running everywhere that are very easy to accidentally step in and get some soggy boots real quick. But for compositions it's amazing & on this afternoon after searching all around this area I came across this triangle shaped fork in the stream with some sharp yellow grass around the edges & loved the composition. The Mountain was covered in a thick blanket of fog most of the time so it was just a matter of waiting for it to appear for a brief moment to capture the scene. 06.01.2022 MILKYWAY, MOON & LIGHTNING AT THE BAY OF ISLANDS! A shot from my GOR roadie a few months back when regional vic was finally let loose after a 6 week or so lockdown. After a pretty uneventful, cloudless but fun sunset shoot at the baker's oven I meet @cwgxposures here at the Bay of Islands lookout hoping the the incoming clouds that were forecast would roll in after the moon set which wasn't the case in the end & they got here just a bit to soon. 06.01.2022 GAGGING FOR SOME MILK!! Standing around in the pitch black at 2:30am with the feel like temp at -5 & loving every second of it down the GOR on Sunday morning. I was starting to get a but frustrated with the all the clouds the last week with a new moon around & a few failed attempts where cloud cover spoilt the party. So this weekend I was keen to go anywhere that the cloud forecast was looking clear. After a bit of research it looked like Port Campbell was looking good for a... setting milkyway so thats were I headed straight after I finished work at 3pm on Saturday. The sunset was pretty amazing & with a hell of a lot of clouds around I was a little worried but actually managed a few shots of a rising MW in between patches of cloud & when I woke up from a 2h nap in the Van at 2am there wasn't a cloud in sight.... Bingo! @mikedyson_ meet up with me and we spent an hour or so freezing our arses off shooting a super vibrant MW from the Tom & Eva lookout. 04.01.2022 THE WIDEST WATERFALL IN VIC UNDER THE STARS!! A different composition from my Galaxy Flow shot previously posted but still pretty spectacular and I bet after all the rain over the weekend this bad boy would be pumping. Hopkins Falls is the widest waterfall in Victoria stretching 90m in length but dropping just 12 metres, but after some really heavy rain that island you see to the right gets totally engulfed and covered by water. After shooting sunrise here one weekend then dr...iving all the way home (pre stage 3 of course) because the clouds weren't playing ball only to get a clear night that very next day and driving all the way back we were rewarded with some really cool shots. I was planning to head back at some point with more flow but I don't know now as the season is fast coming to an end and we're still stuck at home. 02.01.2022 GOLD'N GALAXY!! Stoked to finally get this shot under my belt after having the idea in my mind for the last 2 years. Who would of thought it would be so hard to find a canola field with something of interest in it, close to the road and facing in the right direction, the Milkyway and a clear night sky to all line up Well when I told my farmer mate what I wanted to do he said come with me I think I've got something like that in one of my paddocks. He drove me though a few ga...tes & this is the scene he showed me.... Perfect My original plan was to capture a blue hour shot for the canola then leave my camera in place & wait a few hours for the Milkyway to appear then capture that setting core above the windmill. I set up my blue hour shot left may camera in place & when I came back 2h later Photopills was a fair way out with the alignment & it didn't work so this is just a single 15sec exposure instead. It was a little spooky standing chest high in this field of canola in the pitch black by myself without being able to see your feet or what's on the ground around you but as soon as I seen that 1st shot on the back of my camera I soon forgot about the scary boogeyman. 02.01.2022 BAKERS DELIGHT!! So many amazing spots along the Great Ocean Road and this is one of my new favourites. This particular night was low tide but a very large swell so it made for a pretty hectic but fun shoot. It looks so calm here in this photo but if you didn't keep ya eye on what was coming you would be swimming in no time so it was a run in get a shot or two and then leg it back to higher ground. The rock pools and the green covered rocks make this spot so special and it's ...definitely penciled in for a return visit asap.
