24.01.2022 Update 7 - Moving fast now Next week we will put on the finishing touches and start to take the sculpture apart for transport. #sandberg... #glass #sculpture #swell2018 #wip #workinprogress #sandsculpture #alwaysdifferent #therussian In this update I give you an insight into what happens behind the scenes in building a large sculpture. The last 2 weeks have been quite stressful but also productive. The week before last I could only work 2 days of the week on the sculpture causing a delay in my planning. But this week we caught up and I am really happy to say that he sculpture is finished and we will be putting the finishing touches on on Monday! Over the first 2 days we fitted the Aluminium sheet to the middle and top sections. The next 2 days we glued the glass on. Everything went without any issues, just in time to allow the whole weekend for the glue to cure. On Monday we will fill the gaps with silicone. The next challenge will be to take the sculpture apart, package it onto pallets and then ready to be loaded onto a truck. Thanks for watching!

22.01.2022 Update 3 - The glass sample has been approved. We are printing the sand image this week. I go into more detail on how the base frame will work and the structure on the inside of the sculpture.... #sandberg #glass #sculpture #wip #workinprogress #swell2018 #currumbin #sculpturefestival #thisisqueensland #glasssculpture #diptech #ceramicprintedglass #wip#workinprogress #sandsculpture #alwaysdifferent #therussian

22.01.2022 Well and truly done. 3000 used coffee pods on a geometric superegg. Thanks for the pods that you have sent to me. 22.01.2022 Update 8 - Packing and Transport. My strategy changed withing the space of a 48 hours. I had to lean into this challenge. In the space of 12 hours I built a crate the size of a small house! #sandberg... #glass #sculpture #swell2018 #wip #workinprogress #sandsculpture #alwaysdifferent See more

22.01.2022 Update 2 - I go into more detail on the base frame and the structure As most of you know by now, I am building a giant glass iceberg sculpture to go on the beach on the Gold Coast in September. This is my second update to give you an insight into what happens behind the scenes in building a huge sculpture.... The glass sculpture will have 81 glass triangle facets with the actual sand at Currumbin beach printed on it. The sculpture is broken up into 7 parts. The base frame and 6 units made of plywood, aluminium and glass. Last Thursday we made the base frame. Over the last 3 days I have completed the first 2 of 6 stackable units. Assembly of the third unit is underway. I have also made the main image of the Currumbin sand. The image file is edited in Photoshop and is about 1Gb in size. I took one image and made a print pattern file that is roughly 1.3m by 800mm. #sandberg #glass #sculpture #wip #workinprogress

18.01.2022 Sandberg - Introduction

18.01.2022 Recording of the Q&A.

17.01.2022 Update 1 - Getting started As most of you know by now, I am building a giant glass iceberg sculpture to go on the beach on the Gold Coast in September. This is my first update to give you an insight into what happens behind the scenes in building a huge sculpture.... The glass sculpture will have 81 glass triangle facets with the actual sand at Currumbin beach printed on it. The sculpture is broken up into 7 parts.

16.01.2022 If you can’t fit one of my sculptures in your yard, maybe you can buy a print . Sandberg was beautifully captured by Lexi Spooner at SWELL 2018.

15.01.2022 My second commissioned sculpture was unveiled today. More photos and the backstory to come.

14.01.2022 Campaign Update: I have 3000 pods! Thank You! Follow this link to see some photos of my progress: https://www.facebook.com/jroeloffs.sculpture/posts/669548640221215... 1 Month to go until SWELL Festival Currumbin opens (12-22 September). Come and see the sculpture installation that you made possible. ====== Urgent appeal! I am looking for used aluminium coffee pods. I need to collect 3000 used pods to complete my next sculpture. I am making a large Superegg, covered with 3000 pods, to help raise awareness on how to recycle pods - the right way. Please send 5-10 cleaned pods (or more) to me before 31 August 2019. It would be really helpful if you could clean them out and write a message of support for this environmental awareness outreach. More information about sending me pods here: https://www.jacoroeloffs.com/recycling More about the sculpture here: https://www.jacoroeloffs.com/project/superegg

13.01.2022 We delivered 14 brand new concrete plinths to Northshore today. They are going to be used in the "Northshore Sculpture by the river" exhibition later in the year for a selection of sculptures on display outdoors. With the help of a good friend that is a skilled carpenter/formwork pro, and feedback from other sculptors, I managed to get these two plinth designs into life. After making my own concrete plinth 3 years ago for my sculpture "Fire & Ice" (a big undertaking for an a...mateur!), I thought we can make it easier for other sculptors that can't make new heavy footings for their work. I designed 2 sizes, "tall" and "low". With standard lifting and bolt points on them so that they can be re-used for future exhibitions. Not only did I want them to be standard and functional, they have to also look good. We used cement additives to make the cement near white to give the "gallery" look for the outdoor sculptures. Once sculptures are bolted onto the plinths, they prevent people knocking the sculptures over and theft and vandalism. Just a little side job to help fellow sculptors. I will make more in the future, if I get interest for owning or renting. Can't wait to see the sculptures on them!

11.01.2022 The Walk 2400mm x 1100mm Mixed Media Completed 8 April 2019... The Walk is a commissioned sculpture for a school whose philosophy is based around the bible story of the men from Emmaus. Following Jesus crucifixion, they walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus. The sculpture depicts the emotions of the men, the mood and the surroundings as they talk to the stranger along the way. The sculpture follows the route in an west northwest direction and matches the topography of the hills on the journey. The colour tones goes from dark to light and the overall shape of the sculpture forms a large yellow star of Bethlehem. Aluminium - Clear, Nickel, Grey tones throughout. Black Mirror - Reflection, doubt, sadness; a sombre beginning. Black Ceramic - Emptiness, Thrist, Dried mud emphasises drought. Slate - The cold black and grey stone of the hard road. Aluminium Spill - Listening, learning; living water. Shell - The journey; this walk will become a pilgrimage. Petrified Wood - Nature and the cross. Yellow Star of Bethlehem - The flora of rural Israel then and today. Leather - Warmth starting to appear, clothing, shoes and protection. Mosaic - Colourful mosaics with geometrical patterns and inscriptions in Greek with names in the Roman baths in Emmaus. Fabric - Jesus is revealed. Yellow Glass - Jesus is the light; love, faith and hope.

04.01.2022 Exactly how I visualised it, and even better. Great feeling today after a successful installation. Credit to all the people and volunteers that helped me, the operators of the cranes, trucks and diggers. Without my sponsors Andrew Strelnikov and Nespresso, this would not have been possible. From the beginning I wanted this to be a positive campaign. The momentum and energy has been great, many people participated and sent me pods from all over Australia and a few from overs...eas. People that really care. I am glad that the end result is is an art object of beauty, positivity and working together with manufacturers of coffee capsules and the consumers. I have a vision that each coffee capsule sold, will also be recycled. My message with this sculpture is clear, please recycle your capsules. Send them to the recycle loop already in place by the coffee capsule manufacturers. #superegg #lamécurve #swell2019 #coffeepods #recyclewithnespresso #recyclepodsright #jacoroeloffs SWELL Sculpture Festival Nespresso

03.01.2022 Current work in progress, making my frame and (hardwood) canvas. Response to the destruction of Sandberg. The wall sculpture will be Aluminium on Spotted Gum hardwood. The bushfires of 2019-2020 in Victoria completely destroyed my first major sculpture 'Sandberg'. I was shocked to see how little was left over among the ashes, the fire was so intense and powerful that the aluminium and glass melted and flowed away. The new wall sculpture I am making, will be a re-enactment ...and my vision of beauty that can come from this loss. This is the first time I have publicly spoken about the fact that Sandberg has been destroyed and it is my way to end the chapter. #closure #finishingthechapter #responsetodestruction #sandberg #aluminium #spottedgum #hardwood #shousugiban #sculpture #wip #workinprogress

02.01.2022 Update 6 - Middle and top sections In this update I give you an insight into what happens behind the scenes in building a huge sculpture. The base frame and 6 units made of plywood, aluminium and glass. #sandberg #glass #sculpture #wip #workinprogress #sandsculpture #alwaysdifferent #therussian
