25.01.2022 #NoChildLeftBehind. This National Week of Solidarity, schools all around Australia are standing with the 16,000 children who have been left behind in the pandemic simply because they are the children of people seeking asylum. Here, students from St John Paul II Catholic College in Schofields & Nirimba are taking part in a Circle of Silence that calls for the federal government to provide a viable safety net for people seeking asylum in Australia. Without a safety net, these people and their children remain at tremendous risk of hunger, destitution and slipping into further poverty. Each day, JRS Australia and other charities witness the devastating impact of leaving people behind in this crisis. Learn more: https://jrs.org.au/jrs-australia-joins-partners-in-calling/

25.01.2022 #NoChildLeftBehind. More highlights from schools standing with the 16,000 children who have been left behind in the COVID-19 crisis simply because they are the children of "asylum seekers". Right now, as part of National Solidarity Week, schools are joining the call for a viable safety net for people seeking asylum. Without a safety net, there is nothing to prevent further poverty, destitution and hunger for these children and they families. 24.01.2022 Yesterday the Year 6 students of St Aloysius College participated in a Circle of Silence, standing in solidarity with more than 16,000 children seeking asylum who do not have access to ongoing Federal Government support during the pandemic, and relying on support from diasporas, community members, state governments and NGOs to survive. So many Catholic, and secular schools have answered the call to ensure #NoChildLeftBehind this week, demonstrating strong support for those who have marginalised for so long.

18.01.2022 Today, many hundreds of children seeking asylum are wholly reliant on JRS Australias food bank to eat healthy, nutritious meals. A significant number also depend on emergency relief payments to pay rent or buy life-saving medications... "Children need love, care, safety, and education, not the stress of wondering where their next meal will come from or whether they will be homeless." #NoChildLeftBehind CathNews

18.01.2022 "Elaheh, Hani, Zaki Haidari and many others like them survived the seas to start asylum stories still without an ending. Forced to leave their home and families, they sought protection in Australia. Here they became a number called by their boat ID. They were labelled illegals, even though under international law, seeking asylum is legal, no matter how you arrive or what papers you carry." 'Temporary', a new podcast story series provides a window into the lives of people whose lives have been placed on pause for almost a decade.

14.01.2022 Yesterday we had the privilege of hosting NSW Minister for Multiculturalism and Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee - MP, Seat of Parramatta in Westmead. JRS Australia is grateful to Geoff and the NSW state government for its leadership in supporting temporary visa holders, including people seeking asylum, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The NSW state governments support is enabling us to provide financial relief to nearly 800 people per month, including 285 children, ensuring t...hat these individuals and families can contribute funds to their rent, food, medical, and transport needs. Through the support of parishes, schools, and other community groups, JRS Australia also continues to provide additional financial relief, and food bank support, including via food parcel deliveries to over 800 people across 22 different routes each week. Even with this generous support, demand for support outweighs what we are able to provide. With hundreds of thousands of temporary visa holders in Australia losing jobs and being unable to return home, a systemic financial safety net at the Federal level is required to see people through the pandemic and into the future. #NobodyLeftBehind

13.01.2022 "Childhood is not only a gift but a human right; as part of the #NoChildLeftBehind week of solidarity, our John XXIII College community stands in solidarity with the children of the world seeking asylum." Thank you Johns XXIII College - Perth!

12.01.2022 Thank you so much St Aloysius' College for inviting JRS to a beautiful and powerful liturgy yesterday to reflect on the positive impact that Jesuit organisations have on our community. Thanks to the Aloys boys for their beautiful singing and prayers. We are very grateful for the amazing support of the Aloysius community to JRS.

12.01.2022 "This experience [of working with Jesuit Refugee Service 'JRS' Australia] has continued to affect me. It led me from a theoretical commitment to social justice that fed on anger to focus on the faces of people suffering unjustly. This generated compassion that in turn generated a focused anger. The refugee experience acted, too, as a bullshit detector in my own teaching and reflection on Christian faith and theology. I weighed theological writing and disputes among Catholics by asking how they spoke to the experience of refugees. If they had nothing to say, I happily conceded that they might have merits, but took no further interest in them."

08.01.2022 #NoChildLeftBehind. The school community of Caroline Chisholm College have given to our JRS Refugee Foodbank. This is particularly important as people seeking asylum remain excluded from the safety nets of the federal government. Many people are completely reliant on our Foodbank - and the generosity of the Australian community - to make it through the crisis, as many lost their jobs when the pandemic hit. Last week, the school sent a further donation of the following: -69 c...ans of beans from Year 7 -65 litres of milk from Year 8 -74 packets of pasta from Year 9 -40 kg of rice from Year 10 -22 bottles of oil from Year 11 -20 cans of tuna from Year 12 -plus some fresh eggs, garden picked spinach, carrots and lemons and some toiletries. Thank you so much to everyone! <3 If youd like to help too, please visit: https://jrs.org.au/how-to-help-refugees-and-people-seeking/

05.01.2022 This week, Year 9 students took to Gorman Field to raise awareness for the 16,000 refugee children in Australia who are missing out on vital financial support a...nd resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. During their Magis Integrated Learning lessons, students stood in a Solidarity Circle as part of the Jesuit Refugee Service JRS Australia #NoChildLeftBehind campaign for the National Week of Solidarity (6th-12th September 2020). Prior to observing ten minutes silence in the Solidarity Circe, the students stated: "As Ignatian men, we are committed to standing in solidarity with the marginalised. Even beyond our Ignatian community, Australia is a society that cares about the health and well-being of our children, and these childrens needs cannot be met if their families do not have access to essential services and support. We need to make sure that all children in Australia are safe and supported as if they were our own. "...The Solidarity Circle is a symbol of our commitment to walking with the marginalised and shows our support for children our own age who cannot access the resources we are fortunate to have here at Riverview. While we stand in silence today, we will not remain silent while injustice prevails." To see how you can help, please go to https://jrs.org.au/
