25.01.2022 @solfarmersmarket debut in Upwey was really wonderful. It's going to be monthly so make sure you get it into your schedule. I got some super fresh veggies from a couple of young, first generation farmers from Koo Wee Rup. Some potatoes from a pro potato producer from Thorpdale. Some berries from a family farm in Coldstream. Orange Blossom honey from nearby in the Basin, @basinbackyard_honey. Also couldn't go past getting crepes made by a vendor speaking French. ;) ... #buylocalfirst #upwey #streetonward
24.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC week 2020. I am honored to be living on the lands of the Kulin Nation. I am on land that the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung people have had a deep relationship with for many thousands of years. I pay my respect to Elders past, present and emerging. On Council I hope to get behind all the wonderful things that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are doing in our area. In Lyster, one of the things I hope to support is Belgrave Survival Day Please start... following that account now to see what might be possible or needed in 2021 and beyond. The following text is from the National NAIDOC website and speaks to this year's NAIDOC week theme, Always Was, Always Will Be. "Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future." Continued at www.naidoc.org.au . Head there to see what online events there are. 14.01.2022 It's 6 pm! Voting has officially closed. Here is the complete visual for my Listening to Lyster series of images. It says, JOHANNA SKELTON FOR LYSTER . Whether I'm elected or not I will continue to be 'for Lyster'. ... Thank you to everyone for sharing your vision with me in this series as well as through the community survey and in conversation. I appreciate it so much. Thank you to everyone who helped get the word out in small and large ways. We are fortunate to live in a community of kind, thoughtful and generous people. We are all on the same team in our quest for a fair and sustainable local future. The best path to that goal looks different to everyone but I believe local community based decision is our best way forward. Stay informed. Stay hopeful. Stay kind. Johanna Skelton 6 pm, 16/10/2020
13.01.2022 @yrcouncil area @belgravialeisure are trying something new at Belgrave Pool this Summer. If the evening is over 30'c then they will stay open longer. See pics for details. Be sure to get cool in the pool to support this trial. I think we'll need it even more during a warmer, drier summer than this one! ... Next year, due to requests from community members, I would like to request we trial a longer season so we can know how many people would use it. It could cost us about $15,000 to open for 3 extra weeks in March. What do you think? Worth spending $15k to find out? #localmatters #heatrefuge #heatisland #climatematters #engageyarraranges #publicpool #solarheatedpool

11.01.2022 I was very lucky to attend a webinar by community development legend, Peter Kenyon, last night. Community Changemakers was hosted by @yrcouncil. I hope you were able to be there. If you missed it I'm sure you can get the recording from Yarra Ranges Council soon. Everyone needs to watch this! It was full of inspirational stories about individuals who created active, powerful communities of change across the world. It was like my Community Development degree condensed into a ...much more entertaining form! My key take home: Start looking for the strengths of your community and ask what people care about, and you'll see future opportunities emerge. The giant paper scissors made me smile, as I used some like that to launch the a Tecoma Twilight Market recently. So, what do you care about? What are you going to do about it? https://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au//Community-Changemakers
09.01.2022 Dear Team Local Matters, Thank you for supporting me to become the next Councillor for Lyster Ward. To everyone who assisted in large or small ways, this result is yours!... To my husband and children, thanks for sharing me this year and for the next 4! To all my friends who delivered leaflets, hosted signs, talked to friends about me and parked their hot wheels in public places for me, thank you! To all the business owners who spoke to me about their ideas and issues, thank you. To previous Lyster Councillor, Mike Clarke, for supporting and believing in me this year. To the 100 plus smart, caring people who filled out my rather tedious survey, thank you! To everyone who voted for me, thank you! I was honored to be in first place with first preferences listed on Monday, and again after preferences were allocated today. But it was very close! There were obviously some really experienced and great options for voters in this Ward but here's to being a new voice on Council! I'm excited! Thank you to the 6 other candidates for giving Lyster real democratic choice this election. I look forward to talking with you all about how to work for your voters too. Here's to being a voice from the main demographic in Lyster, families and under 50 year olds! Here's to standing up for climate action, for social justice, for supporting local initiatives that will encourage a healthy, thriving community that shops, plays, works and creates locally! I'm so glad that the community of Lyster Ward decided that Local Matters! Thank you so much. Please stick around my social media because I want to make sure that over the next 4 years you know your power as involved citizens and use your voice on the things that matter to you. Yours in service, Johanna Skelton BTW, If you've just arrived to my page after hearing I've been elected, welcome! Please read through my previous posts or check out my website at www.johannaskelton.com for more about me.
07.01.2022 Please read this post about personal actions we can take to give Platypus a better chance of survival in our area. I see a lot of dogs playing in the creek at Belgrave Lake Park. Your dog may not even meet the platypus but it's smells and actions might mean the platypus can't live there. At a higher level we need to give greater protection to our waterways, support farmers to fence off their creeks from livestock and make sure native plants can grow to support healthy habita...t. A Biodiversity Strategy, like Whittlesea Council's linked below, would assist our community to protect life. What do you think? If you would like to see a Biodiversity Strategy in the Yarra Ranges Council area please contact them and let them know. [email protected] and please cc me in at [email protected] .
