25.01.2022 How do you manage a flare-up of back pain? Recently one of my clients had a weekend of socialising and catching up with friends, which was a wonderful experience for her. The downside was that she sitting for the entire weekend on uncomfortable chairs, her glutes had switched off and she had a flare-up of back pain. Having worked with her for many years I knew that sitting for long periods was an issue for her. She had been dealing with the pain for several days when I saw he...r for her weekly Pilates session. Sitting was painful so she spent a lot of time lying down. When I asked her if she had done some of her Pilates exercises, she had done a small amount but knew she should have done the glute work but had avoided it. Activating her glutes would have supported her back and reduced the pain. After doing the glute work 2 or 3 times, knowing her body and the way it reacts she would have been pain-free. Her instinct was to be still when moving would have been the ideal solution. She is not alone in feeling like this. Many people want to avoid moving but movement really does heal. As Joseph Pilates said "Change happens through movement and movement heals" Specific, targeted movement really is medicine. Just like being prescribed medication for an illness. The right exercises at the right time can heal, the wrong exercises for a particular issue can make the condition worse. So it's important to be guided by someone who has the knowledge and experience to know what is best for your individual condition During her session, we worked on unwinding the tension and getting her abdominals and glutes activated and supporting her again. She felt much better at the end and more confident to keep practicing on her own before the next session. Unless your pain is acute and you have been advised by a medical practitioner not to move, Pilates is the perfect solution for becoming pain-free. DM if you need some help getting started See more

25.01.2022 Do we have bones in our feet? Why are muscles important? What are these bones called at the front of my chest? These are just some of the questions my clients have asked me over the years in my Pilates studio. Getting to know how your body works can be hugely beneficial in helping you to know what is normal for you and what isn't normal and needs attention. Pilates helps you to develop this body awareness and the more finely tuned this awareness becomes, the more you can fi...ne-tune your body and take control of your own health and fitness. There are 26 bones in the foot, muscles have several functions but they pull on our bones to move them and the bones in our chest are part of our ribcage. If you are curious about how your body works and would like to be able to move with ease, DM me to get started on your Pilates journey. When it comes to our bodies, knowledge really is power See more

17.01.2022 Happy New Year Everyone! Best Wishes from Jo

17.01.2022 It's hard to believe it's 17 years ago this month that I started my year-long Pilates course at University. Part of my training was to complete more than 200 hours as an apprentice in a Pilates studio with experienced instructors. It was amazing to have this opportunity as watching a highly skilled teacher work with their clients and then be able to ask questions at the end of the session was invaluable. As much as I loved my training, developing all the necessary skills and ...knowledge needed to be a successful Pilates teacher was enormously challenging. A few students dropped out along the way, one didn't make the grade and I know very few of my classmates are still working as Pilates teachers today. Why am I telling you this? Because anything worthwhile takes time. I'm passionate about helping people to achieve life-changing results with Pilates. I've already helped hundreds of people to take control of their debilitating back pain, regain their health and fitness after surgery and prepare for pregnancy and the list goes on and on. What if I'd given up like most of my classmates? What if I had decided it was was just too hard? Someone else would have helped all my clients over the past 15 years. But what if they hadn't and many of them were still looking for a solution to their problem? Are you considering starting Pilates? Do you already practice Pilates? I want to encourage you to be committed to yourself and your practice to achieve the results you deserve. I've seen many people say they want to be pain-free or they want to change their lives with Pilates but they just can't follow through. Anything worthwhile takes time and Pilates is no exception. If you are ready to commit to yourself and your Pilates training with a Pilates teacher who will be 100% committed to helping you transform your life, PM to chat.

13.01.2022 Are you including eye exercises in your movement routine? Recently, I had to have an eye examination to renew my driver's licence. I don't wear glasses and I'm hoping to avoid them for as long as possible. Like a lot of people, I really hate having drops squirted in my eyes, so I was a little nervous and apprehensive. The good news is I passed the test with great results! No glasses needed, for now anyway. In the lead up to the test, I restarted doing my daily eye exercises..., which I used to do regularly and I can't believe how amazing my eyes feel! I also practiced reading signs and car number plates as far into the distance as I could for added challenge. We work the other muscles of our bodies so why not our eye muscles? This is a very simple routine you can do and it takes only a couple of minutes. I do it when I'm waiting for something. At first, your eye muscles might be sore but as you get used to moving your eyeballs, it should become pain-free. * Look up and down x 10 * Look side to side x 10 * Look diagonally from top right corner to bottom left corner x 10 * Look diagonally from top left corner to bottom right x 10 * Start at the top and do 5 big circles in each direction There are variations of these, but this is a good basic workout to start with. As you get used to it add some of your own variations. DM if you have any questions. Is this something you already do? I'm very curious! Let me know in the comments below See more

12.01.2022 Spending too much time working at a computer? It's so easy to get absorbed in what you are working on and lose track of time. Tight or painful hips is one of the most common issues my clients deal with. What's the solution? * Set an alarm or a reminder to get up and move around. Even short breaks are beneficial ! * Schedule short 10 min Pilates sessions into your workday to revitalize you. A combo of glute & ab strengthening & hip flexor stretching is ideal to keep everything... working efficiently. Just keep moving See more

12.01.2022 Take time to listen to your body, before the whisper becomes a scream

08.01.2022 Prevention has always been one of my favourite concepts. If there is a way to prevent an argument, an illness, or an accident, I will do it! Maybe that's one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about Pilates. I see so many people around me on a daily basis who are struggling with painful conditions that are entirely preventable! If these people had been introduced to Pilates, they could have avoided that shoulder injury, spinal surgery or hip replacement surgery. Sometimes t...hings happen medically that are out of our control, but strengthening with Pilates really does future-proof you against so many health conditions. If something unexpected does come your way and you are trained in Pilates, you are in a much better condition to deal with it. If you want to know how you can start strengthening with Pilates and stay strong, happy & healthy as you age PM me to get started and I can help you to start future-proofing yourself straight away!

07.01.2022 What is one reason Pilates is so popular?? There is a very long list of reasons but one, in particular, is that you feel wonderful after a session! So many of my clients comment on how good they feel after a session. If feeling relaxed and calm but energised and focussed at the same time sounds appealing, then Pilates may be for you! If you already practice Pilates you will understand what I'm talking about. If you want to experience all the benefits of Pilates DM me to get started

05.01.2022 Movement is Life What does this actually mean? Way back when I was at Uni, studying to be a Pilates Teacher, our lecturer said "Movement is Life," She then delivered a very powerful lecture, which had such an impact on me, I still remember it almost 17 years later and it has influenced my whole Pilates vision. She asked us to imagine what it would be like to be heading towards the end of our lives and have several years left of being mentally healthy but having lost the abili...ty to move. What would that mean? Basically, you have lost your independence and you would be 100% dependent on others for your very survival. You would also be putting yourself at risk of a range of other diseases due to being completely inactive. Not to mention the mental health issues as well. This all sounds very depressing but this is where Pilates comes in. Many of the issues that could cause you to lose your ability to move are entirely preventable. I'm passionate about helping people to stay strong, flexible and pain-free so they can move with ease well into their retirement years. I've helped hundreds of people over the years to take control of their own health and fitness and live life on their own terms, well into their later years. If you want to move with ease through all stages of life, Pilates is for you. DM me to get started, I can help you on your path to independence See more

04.01.2022 When I was in my early teens my Mum needed to buy a new car and a neighbor had the perfect solution. His elderly friend could no longer drive and was looking for a buyer for his beautifully maintained vehicle. The car was rarely used, garaged, had low mileage and was being sold for a good price so my Mum snapped it up! It was so exciting to have such a lovely car but before long to our horror, it gradually began to fall apart. It was literally one repair after the other. At t...imes it seemed like maybe it would have been cheaper to buy a brand new car. So what went wrong? Cars don't respond well to being stationary for extended periods of time. They are designed to be driven, not wrapped up in cotton wool and taken out once a year for 30 minutes. The fluids dry up, rust appears, the engine seizes up and as we discovered, it breaks down regularly. Sounding at all familiar? Our bodies are designed to move. If we don't move we will start to fall apart too. At first, you might not see any evidence of this, just like our car, but eventually, you will feel it. One of my lovely clients went through a very stressful time last year during Covid lockdown. She took a break from Pilates and walking and worked from home from morning till late at night in a very demanding job. She went from bed to computer and back to bed. Fortunately, she realised she was on a dangerous path and returned to Pilates as she was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and advised to lose weight by her doctor. Lack of movement really is dangerous. Don't wait until you start to fall apart to make changes. Start moving now. I can help you take the steps you need to start moving again and take control of your own health and fitness. DM me to get started
