25.01.2022 Wake up your computer on demand without WoL Whether you don't want to keep your home lab computers on 24/7 for security reason or just want to be environmentally friendly and save energy, you want to be able to switch on/wake up your computer on demand. The popular way to achieve this is utilise WoL - Wake On Lan, an old technology back in 1997. Basically you can turn on your computer from anywhere. It involves configure your Router, set up a DDNS and turn on WoL BIOS feature...s. We won't discuss details here today, rather, we target the computers that do not support WoL in their BIOS. There is actually a option before my experiment - Remoteboot with ESP8266 chipset, but it aims to Desktop PC only, not Apple computer or laptops, because it requires standard power and reset interfaces - means you need to plug pin into the mainboard. Anyway, it might still be an option for you and you can visit here for more information: https://www.kickstarter.com//remoteboot-wifi-r/description Well if your BIOS not support WoL you might still be able to wake up it by using a very simply technique - shake your mouse. I'm not kidding. Wireless mouse is preferable, you should at least set up your computer waking up by keyboard/mouse. Go to Power options on your Windows/Linux machine. Most mouse should work but if it does, just try another mouse. One of my Logitech wireless mouses doesn't work, experiment it. After getting your mouse working and waking up while it's sleeping here is the real work, but still, you need at least one equipment to get it work - an old mobile that can vibrate on incoming calls plus a SIM card(this card should be able to take phone calls), then put your mouse over the mobile. When your computer is in sleep mode, ring the number from anywhere, your computer will be waking up. No DDNS setup, no need to mess up with your router, and no need raspberry pi as medium inside LAN, no need another computer as medium inside your LAN if you use Teamviewer or logmein. If you find the vibrate is not strong enough to wake up your computer, put a pen under the mobile, try again.

23.01.2022 Windows 10 free upgrade deadline has expired, but can we still activate Windows 10 using a Windows 7 or Windows 8 Product Key for free? Microsft said that Windows 10 free upgrade stopped at 29/07/2016, so it did. Now you can't see the upgrade icon on your taskbar anymore, but do you have to pay $149 to upgrade to Windows 10? Not necessarily so far as long as you have the correct edition of Windows 10 TH2(1511) Installer ISO. Just run a clean Windows 10 install and use your Windows 7/8 Product key, you can still activate your new Windows 10. (Tested on 31/08/2016)

15.01.2022 How to run Sierra on your old Macbook Pro/iMac For those of you do not know that your old Mac might still be able to run the latest macOS Sierra with a third party ptach, here is the quick reference and steps: First your Mac needs to be in the following list:... * Early-2008 or newer Mac Pro, iMac, or MacBook Pro (MacPro 3,1 and 4,1, iMac 8,1 and 9,1, MacBook Pro 4,1, 5,1 5,2, 5,3, 5,4, and 5,5) * Late-2008 or newer MacBook Air or Aluminum Unibody MacBook (MacBookAir 2,1, MacBook 5,1) * Early-2009 or newer Mac Mini or white MacBook (Macmini 3,1, MacBook 5,2) * Early-2008 or newer Xserve (Xserve 2,1) How to find your Mac version: Click the Apple icon on the top menu -> Click About this Mac -> then System Report, you will see the exact mac version, if you are not sure, check the screenshots here. If your Mac is not listed above, unfortunately, it's not supported by the patch yet. Now you need some tools to do the job. Utilities you need: * macOS Sierra Installer App. This can be obtained from the Mac App Store using a machine that supports Sierra * A USB drive with at least 8 GB * A copy of the patch - You can download from the author's website here (Current version: 4.2.7). Please note, current version only support Sierra 10.12.4, if you would like to install previous macOS like 10.12.3 or 10.12.2, you will need earlier patch such as 4.2.3 is working with 10.12.3 Steps (from author's website): 1. Insert your desired USB drive, open Disk Utility, and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). 2. Open the "macOS Sierra Patcher" tool, and browse for your copy of the macOS Sierra Installer App. 3. Next, select your USB drive in the Target Volume list, and click "Start Operation." 4. When the operation completes, boot your target unsupported Mac off the USB drive you just created. 5. When the installer boots, open Disk Utility. 6. Select the disk or partition you want to install on, and erase it, ensuring to use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the filesystem type. If formatting an entire drive, ensure GUID is selected. 7. Install macOS normally onto the desired volume. 8. When the install completes, reboot back onto the installer drive. This time, open the "macOS Post Install" application. 9. In the application, select the Mac model you are using. The optimal patches will be selected for you based on the model you select. You can also select other patches of your choosing. 10. Select the volume you have just installed macOS Sierra on, and click "Patch." When it finishes patching, click "Reboot". It may sit there for a few moments rebuilding caches before rebooting. 11. When it reboots, it should now boot into a fully working copy of macOS Sierra. All credit goes to the author dosdude1, please visit dosdude1's website for detailed screenshots. There are some known issues and workaround, please check it out as well.

BSOD for Windows 10 with both Intel Skylake Virtualization Technology and Avast 8. Cortana disappears 9. Unable to login with password nor pin number 10. Remote Desktop problem, unable to remote connect 11. Remote Desktop Connection works but RemoteApp stopped working 12. Network printers disappear 13. Photos and music are all missing 14. 11.01.2022 Let's meet the latest ransomware! I received an email last night saying my parcel couldn't be delivered by FedEx. In the first glance it looks ordinary, since Fastway, TNT and even AuPost started to send notice by email sometimes. BUT there is a zip attachment. You should be cautious about every email coming into your Inbox with attachments, so I unzipped it into a test folder, though my Operating System is Linux - much less vulnerable to virus/malware.... I've had customers called for help after they got infected by the ransomware and after some conversation the only advise I could give was either pay the ransom (around $500 USD) if the documents are so important, or just forget about it at the moment as there is no decryption tools available so far. So I suspect this email could be having ransom viruses in the attachment. There were two files in the zip file. One of them is binary and another one is javascript and I could open it in a text editor. I could tell, this script needs to access Internet to do the job, though I'm not a programmer. As I was keen to confirm this ransomware, I created a sandbox - a Windows 7 Professional VirtualMachine with virtualbox (a great free Virtual Machine). Nothing happened after clicking the ransomware file, no weired task in Windows task manager. Then I enabled Network/Internet access. Now I could see a suspicious process named "a1.exe" appeared, then there was another "a1.exe". Only few minutes later, an image window popped up and also a browser plus the wallpaper changed, very noticeable that my sandbox Windows 7 was infected -- indeed by the ransomware. I actually was a bit worried about the Network Drive, in case my working folder was mapped into the Windows network drive. All my working files would be encrypted if this variant could do the damage to the network drive. Of course, I had double checked that the network drive only mapped to a limited folder in my host Linux, but who knows, people make mistake!! To my surprise, the test image and file on the network drive were untouched, but the test image and file on the USB stick were encrypted, which means I would have to pay the ransom if those are valuable documents. You can see the file names have been encrypted as well, and a html file was created and will point you to the web page about how to pay the ransom. So far, there is absolutely no solution, so be careful about the attachment.

10.01.2022 How can I safely install software from the Internet? A question often asked by customer after their computer has been infected and then cleaned. Well, the simple answer is only download a program from the official link or even simpler answer from computer repair shops is "Bring it to our shop, we'll do that for you and charge you". Not everyone wants to spend that money, so there are tips from adwcleaner:... * Always download a program from teh official link, or a trusted site * When installing a program, do not click too fast [Next] without paying attendtion to Terms of Use and third-party programs available * If third-party programs are available (toolbars, etc...), uncheck all checkboxes about it * Enable detection of PUPs in your antivirus. adwcleaner is a powerful malware removal tool that has been used by computer technician on daily basis.) The fact that average computer users can NOT really tell what's the official link for most of the programs. So here comes the another wonderful program which you can use to install a lot of popular/great/cool software without any risk of toolbars or your homepage getting changed. This program is called Ninite and to use it is very simple: you go to their website https://ninite.com/ or just google Ninite. And you are presented with a list of popular software, you check boxes on the software that you want to install, click download, and the program runs and you are done within minutes. It's not only useful for a new computer but also save your time for updating software. It saves hours when you have a new computer. Browsers, media players, anti-virus and anti-malware, system utilities, and more, without the need to download more than one file yourself. If the item on its list is not installed, it will be installed. If you have something that is already up to date, it will be skipped and if you have software that is outdated, Ninite will update it.

01.01.2022 Advice to people who want to buy used iphone I've had few people coming asking to do the factory reset on their new purchased used iphone, unfortunately, those iphone could be problem iphone, so please stay away from it. 1. Verify the IMEI Number from the Body and Software... Make sure the IMEI Number on the body matches in iOS. So to avoid replaced/insurance claim scam iPhone. You can find IMEI on the SIM tray for iPhone 6s Plus/6s/3G/3GS/4/4s and on the back of the body for iPhone 6 Plus/6/5c/5s/5. Then go to Settings -> General -> About, swipe down to IMEI and check if the IMEI matches on the physical one. 2. Make sure you’re getting a genuine iPhone, not stolen If the iPhone you’re buying has "Find my iPhone" turned on and still has the previous owner’s Apple ID linked, you won’t be able to do anything with it. Before you exchange cash in person, use Apple's Activation Lock status tool to check and make sure the iPhone you're eyeing hasn't been stolen. You'll need the device's IMEI or serial number to check the status, but this shouldn't be an issue -- if the seller is legitimate, he or she will have no problems handing over this information. If you have the iPhone in working condition go to Settings -> iCloud and turn off Find my iPhone. Or if you can't physically access the device before buying, go to Apple’s online Activation Lock tool https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/ and type in the device’s IMEI number.

01.01.2022 I have a customer here with $50 x 2 Telstra pre-paid recharge voucher. She bought it from Taree Telstra Shop on 11/1/2018 and now she moved to Vodafone because of better plan. Telstra doesn't accept refund and she's hoping someone might need it and she wants $40 each. It expires on 31/10/2019 and there is a "Recharge Auth No" on it. This voucher needs to be recharged at my workshop for me to verify if it works or not. And also to collect money for the customer. It can be used for smartphone, tablet & mobile broadband.
