17.01.2022 What Is Progressive Overload? Progressive Overload involves continually increasing the demands we place on our musculoskeletal system to continue acheiving gains in muscle size, strength, and endurance. Simply put, to continue progressing, you must continually make your muscles work harder than they're used to. Most often, that means increasing the resistance, but as this is not always possible there are multiple other ways we achieve this such as: - Increasing the number of... reps - Increasing the number of sets - Decreasing the duration of rest periods - Changing the tempo of your reps Why is Progressive Overload important to me? I like to describe the human body like a lazy teenager. You know the ones, that don't like to do what you ask them to do initially but when you force them they will only do the bare minimum and never go the extra mile! This describes the adaptions our body makes down to a tee. Have you ever jogged the same distance at the same intensity for a period of time for a couple of weeks and its gotten easier, but when you try run a little faster or a little further you're all of a sudden dying again? Our body will only adapt to the stresses we place on it and no further which means that in order to keep climbing the ladder towards our goals we must keep setting the bar higher! An example of Progressive Overload Let use a barbell squat for example over a period of 4 weeks. To apply the principal of progressive Overload we would increase the maximum resistance each week. That could look a little like this: Week 1- max resistance: 50 kg Week 2 - max resistance: 55 kg Week 3 - max resistance: 60 kg Week 4 - max resistance: 62.5kg By making that resistance a little higher each session we are forcing our body to not sit in its comfort zone and continue adapting to the stresses we are placing on it. Remember this won't always be linear and to always progress the load in a safe manner DM the page for any questions or comments

06.01.2022 It's that time of the year again where everyone sets out to try and smash out those new year goals that we all try to set, many of which revolve around fitness/fat loss. Many people set out with good intentions and for those people it normally starts as follows. "I need you to write me up a food plan" is a demand that I hear from friends and family at nearly any gathering or social event that I attend which normally leaves me perplexed for two reasons. first of all you could... google 1000 different plans to follow in 10 mins for free. second of all and more importantly, if following a cookie cutter plan was so simple you would already have the body of your dreams and I would be out of a job! That's why when I stumbled across this picture I couldn't help but have a laugh and share it on here because it's pretty much a picture perfect example of how an eating plan ends up 9/10 times! The path to long term sustainable success is much easier to follow with proper goal setting and face to face individualised training and nutrition plans!
