11.01.2022 The Brisbane Ekka may be cancelled this year but on this Flashback Friday we take a look at the first ever Royal Queensland Show in 1876. Bowen Park was chosen for the first show, called the Intercolonial Exhibition of 1876, held from August 22-26. A public holiday was declared and on opening day 17,000 people attended - a colossal success given that the total population of Brisbane at the time was only 22,000.... Men attended in their suits and ladies in their finest garments. Food was served on long tables and the first showbag - a bag of coal - was free for all visitors. It was not until 1877 the first Ekka ride was introduced - a merry-go-round. The first fireworks were in 1894.

10.01.2022 Our wonderful Ekka Showbag initiative for our clients has made the Channel 10 news. Check it out below.

03.01.2022 How much do you know about the iconic Bertie Beetle? Given the Ekka was meant to start this week and the chocolate treat is one goodie inside the Jubilee Community Care showbags being delivered to our clients at the moment we thought we'd explore its history on this Flashback Friday. The chocolate Bertie Beetle was launched by Hoadleys in 1963 and is generally supposed to have been created as a way to use up fragments of honeycomb left over from making the companys famous V...iolet Crumble bar. It is made from milk chocolate containing small chips of honeycomb. A white chocolate version with caramel chips was later developed, but discontinued. At some point after Rowntrees took over Hoadleys in 1970, the product was withdrawn from sale in shops and could only be purchased in a showbag at the Royal Shows and Exhibitions in various states. Bertie seems to have been a name associated with beetles for several decades before the Hoadleys product was launched. In the 1930s, Bertie Beetle was a character in a series of stories in the childrens section of several Australian newspapers. Written by The Sandman the series featured Will Wattlegum (a koala) and Clarence the kookaburra. There was also an author in the 1940s who, under the pseudonym of Bertie Beetle, produced a childrens book called Gilbert the Guinea Pig and Other Tales. Like the famous Freddo Frog, Bertie Beetle (the chocolate) has been transformed over the years. Bertie was originally beetle-shaped, tightly wrapped in printed foil and sold for threepence. The foil wrappers highlighted the beetles beautiful spotted wings. Find out more at https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/1963-bertie-beetle/
