23.01.2022 Product testing - fresh sourdough crumpets... #jujusnotdead

10.01.2022 More product testing - Sourdough Pancakes...

09.01.2022 Why the #BanTheBag campaign is pointless and misdirection, and what the real problem is... (warning: long rant ahead but please read through to the end...) Whi...lst I commend any effort to reduce plastic pollution and general waste levels, effort misdirected is ultimately a waste of energy. Yes, plastic bags are a major problem and it really shouldn't pose much issue to have them banned, as #WaleedAli has pointed out on numerous occasions in his push to #banthebag The problem with that is this... There will be a void created in the absence of convenient carry bags with which to transport the many items purchased in a typical shopping excursion, which will inevitably be filled with an environmentally friendly item to serve the same purpose. Said item will no doubt be mass produced somehow to fill the demand created by the giant market share that #Coles and #Woolworths hold. This couldn't be a better example of not seeing the forest for the trees, for within the relatively few plastic bags being carried out by shoppers lay dozens of, often unnecessarily, packaged products that account for a much larger percentage of waste produced, including plastic. The problem is not the plastic bags, the real problem is the supermarkets, specifically Coles and Woolworths... They would have you believe this is how it has always been, that they can fulfil ALL of your shopping needs, but this is not so. Families used to shop at the butchers, bakers, fruit shops, delicatessens and the chemist and only go to the supermarket (remember Jewel and Franklins? "No-Name" and "No Frills" brands?) to fill the gaps - toilet paper, breakfast cereal, drinks (if they didn't get them delivered already) while our milk generally came in recycled glass bottles from the daily Milko in his truck and the paperboy would throw your newspaper on your front yard... Now there's all this debate about our health, obesity, etc and no one seems to have a fucking clue! What's different today than it was before this "epidemic"? Supermarkets! Anybody knows that the more you try to do, the less gets done well or properly. Yet Australia seems to think Coles and Woolworths are really doing us good! They employ celebrity chefs for endorsements, so your concious is appeased that you're truly eating the best you can get (shame on you #CurtisStone and #JamieOliver!) and utilise the media to keep the population brainwashed. They use their "buying power" and market share to bully small producers into accepting unfair and minimal revenue for their product and have been known to threaten them with being pulled from the shelves if they don't accept their terms while replacing them with their own products, branded with very similar packaging designed to deceive. If you disbelieve me take a closer look at the brand variety now available at your local Coles or Woolworths. Not to mention you can now buy fruit and vegetables not only pre-packaged but also prepared and in a variety of "convenient" slices, portions, slivers and slices, which are also packaged! (And seriously, who fucking buys two or three chillies in a plastic box! Sorry, but if you do you're a fucking idiot!) Not only is the quality of the produce there terrible (heard the term "birthday apples"?) but the prices paid to the farmers is pitiful and I'm sure that pattern runs through the deli and meat depts too. They have been primarily responsible for the near death of our dairy industry twice now and have single handedly nearly destroyed Bakeries and butchers as well, not to mention the massive damage done to our general economy (Think of the previously mentioned shopping scenario - bakeries, butchers, delis, fruiterers, chemists, the Milko and paperboy are all included in the weekly economy alongside the supermarkets. Now you have only the supermarkets who quite often now own the shopping centres they are in and can control what other tenants occupy the building and where. From 8 thriving individual businesses to 1 massive corporation!) Now back to the point. As a result of their monopoly, virtually everything you buy is now packaged - from fruit &veg, meats and breads to entire meals - whereas previously we would generally buy unpackaged items (meat, bread, smallgoods, fruit and vegetables) and, yes, put those in something to carry which was mostly paper bags and/or boxes, and those boxes were usually the bulk packaging of what we were buying and not something made for the purpose (remember the big cages of boxes most supermarkets had near the exit after the registers? Right next to the shelf where you packed your own shopping from the trolley?) What happens now? No boxes in sight and every checkout person seems to be trained to put as few items in each bag as possible! Let me reiterate here though, the number of shopping bags isn't the biggest problem, it's the amount of packaging that goes in those bags that's the problem! It's the giant corporations that have monopolised our everyday lives and well being that have engendered the culture of packaging vs produce and only care about our wallet and what's in it going to theirs and staying there. They don't care if you're healthy! They don't care if the produce they sell you is the best! They only care that you spend all your shopping money with them while they pay the lowest possible price to their suppliers! And if you think they care about the environment think again, what do you think they do with all those boxes we used to reuse now? Yep, more waste... #banthesupermarket #banColes #banWoolworths These are the campaigns we need to promote and put our efforts towards if we want to make any real difference! If you're thinking "what's the alternative?" then to you I say... Find your local farmer's markets, fruit vendors, delicatessens, butchers and bakers. Most cities have many good markets in a variety of locations that have everything under the one roof and, unlike the supermarkets, it's all fresh and offered by someone that cares about their quality, knows about their product and runs their own business. Better deals can be found at the markets than the supermarket, everyone knows the madness of the last few hours of spruiking and deals, and the variety is great. Not to mention the atmosphere is infinitely more pleasant at the markets. Also, many giant shopping malls will have a pocket of fresh producers somewhere, usually away from the entrances to Coles or Woolworths. Alternatives are all around you, just look! Yes, as I said this has been a long rant, but it is a #calltoarms. Churchill didn't just say "Come on lads, we can beat them if we try hard!", Lincoln didn't say "I reckon we shouldn't own people hey, it just seems wrong." nor can I just say "Supermarkets suck!" and expect to be heard... #WaleedAli #banthesupermarket #banColes #banWoolworths
