24.01.2022 The saga of Fremantle Councils financial mismanagement continued this week. Not only has the City under and over paid its staff for years and again this week fell short of its budgetary obligations in regards its Operating Surplus Ratio, it now emerges that the Council is asking a well-known small business man to pay approximate $80,000 because the Council, as his landlord, has been providing him with the incorrect electrical bill for the last 2 years. Not only is he expecte...d to find the sizable amount of money but any budgeting he has done based on historical expenses has been thrown out the window. The Council is blind to the stress that it causes its small business community - and the Chamber of Commerce fails to hold it accountable. (PS The Council, in its response to questions about our financial position, bragged about last financial years $4.5 million cash surplus. Yet part of this surplus is due to the ongoing rate increase to pay for the FOGO bin system - which was promoted as a one-off rate rise. Shouldnt the CoF reduce commercial rates back to what they should be for struggling small businesses who dont get the FOGO bins and pay for their own waste removal?) #FremantleChamberOfCommerce #FCC #CityofFremantle

24.01.2022 Its the 40th anniversary this year of arguably the greatest WAFL grand final of all time - 1979 South Fremantle / East Fremantle Derby Grand Final. My husband sat on his dad's knee at the ground to watch it. Since we are still a Shark's family (though each year it looks more doubtful given Easts recent performances) it was a great day for him.... But the boys do play in the South Fremantle district and cheered for the Bulldogs at this year's GF. Their loyalties are now divided. And who could forget Marlion Pickett's AFL Grand Final performance for Richmond - a fantastic effort from a South Freo man. (My boys were so excited as they played with his son at the Fremantle City Dockers and regularly kicked with Marlion!) The quicker we can get both Souths and Easts playing at the same ground and sharing new clubrooms in the centre of Fremantle the better it will be for weekend life here. These clubs need long term leases to provide them with financial stability to allow them to carry on all the work they do with our youngsters - not the Councils idea of cancelling of Souths remaining 34 year lease and offering them only 10 years. https://thewest.com.au//relive-the-1979-wafl-grand-final-c

21.01.2022 **URGENT** Greg James sculpture, Bella, at Bathers Beach / Fishing Boat Harbour disappeared last night, presumed stolen! I wouldnt want to guess at its value!... Please keep an eye out.
20.01.2022 Onward and upward! Thank you to all that helped me during the campaign. I didn't make it onto Council but I did improve - and there is always next time.... I have no agenda but to make the City Ward better for my kids. (And since the majority voted for change, and small businesses are now not represented, stand by for some upcoming developments.) Julie
20.01.2022 You never know what you will see whilst out on Fremantle streets door-knocking. DethridgeGroves Real Estates office windows on Norfolk Street exuberantly shout We Know Freo! And unintentionally photo-bombing their Bathers Beach photograph are two of my boys having an afternoon swim. ... Who knows Freo? We know Freo! DethridgeGrovess video promotes Freos best. https://youtu.be/Grlv55z4A44
20.01.2022 https://www.afr.com//australia-is-rich-dumb-and-getting-du If Fremantle replaces Australia in this article, we can see how narrow our economy is in our City. We need to broaden it.
19.01.2022 Its a sick joke really...
18.01.2022 We are only 2.5 weeks into summer here in Fremantle and already the local businesses I have spoken with are becoming frustrated with the annual upturn in crime. On a personal level we had the police at the Fremantle Beach Backpackers on 3 consecutive days last week, plus the usual garbage spilling onto the footpath and them p*ssing against one of our Level 1 heritage buildings. Response from Fremantle Council (Rachel Pemberton, Mark Donnelly, Chris Scanlan, et al.) or our Sta...te Member, Simone McGurk? Nothing. In fact Chris Scanlan, Community Safety Team Leader, stated that this level of anti-social should be expected by those living and working in the CBD. Personally I never saw anything like the behaviour I have witnessed here in Fremantle in any of the cities I lived in overseas for over 15 years. (Edit - Rachel Pemberton's latest response - we need to call another meeting (of only businesses NOT residents) to discuss. She seems to forget the meeting held in April to deal with exact same issues.) #thisisfremantle
18.01.2022 When Trevor Whyte asked me to help him with his cafe, Orange Box, at Leighton Beach I went straight to 50s/60s surfing images for inspiration. Many changes were made to the design given the tight budget but my Okanui print floor pattern made it! Trevor took the initial Council plan for a small kiosk and through his determination and vision turned it into a community hangout. The quiet park is now booming all year.
18.01.2022 Today was a very Croatian day. I met many resident Hrvati, so I thought I would post this picture of us flying the "ahovnica" from the last year's World Cup with Denis and Tihana at Pasta Addiction. I can't wait until the weather warms and they return to their summer hours. Then we can sit on a Friday or Saturday evening with a little vino under the trees and enjoy their fresh pasta.
18.01.2022 Tomorrow's the last day to vote in the 2019 Local Government Elections. Please bring your ballot down to the Fremantle Town Hall between 8am - 6pm. If your ballot is lost or needs to be replaced you can also come to the Town Hall. I have met hundreds of amazing Fremantle City Ward residents, business operators and building owners over the campaign.... I want to thank you all for your words of encouragement. The essence of my campaign, and why I want to become the next City Ward councillor, is I believe someone that spends 24 hours a day in the City Ward, shopping, working and raising a family, is most suited to the role of representing the community on the Council. To be your best advocate is my sole goal. I already personally know I large number of those in the electorate, and over the next 4 years look forward to shaking hands with and listening to those that I am yet to meet. I am HONEST, HARDWORKING, APPROACHABLE and above all SENSIBLE. Thank you all. Julie [If you need more encouragement to be there, I understand that Marija Vujcic (Marija is a candidate for South Ward) is seeking signatures for her petition to have Fremantle to Perth express trains reinstated. Two of my boys catch the train to school everyday. Proximity to the station was one reason we moved into the city. Their commute has now been increased. Public transport is key to reducing our reliance on cars. https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2019/10/11/peak-hour-peeve/ This is another example of Fremantle losing state government services. Police, hospital staff and express trains have gone. The fire station may be next. Our Council must lobby, lobby, lobby.]
18.01.2022 We are lucky to have Ashley and Nigel Sutton set up a small bar in Freo. Have a look at one article about their Hong Kong bar. https://hivelife.com/meet-the-man-behind-the-iron-fairies/ They have opened small bars in some of the busiest cities in South East Asia. But their bar on Henry Street, Fremantle has only been open for a couple of months and they are already having problems with the Fremantle Beach Backpackers. When is Andrew Twiggy Forrest, the landlord, who is aware ...of the problems, or the Council going to do something about this business that has brought drugs, violence and other issues to our community in the West End? #thisisfremantle See more
18.01.2022 Flaming Skirts, a womens small business association organized by Mia Kriznic and friends, had their Christmas Sundowner at Joannes Kelp Bar at Kidogo last night. Thanks Mia and ladies for a relaxing evening on the beach. https://facebook.com/events/1209018205951005/?ti=icl
11.01.2022 Of course I cant just mention the Croatians in Fremantle. We have such a rich mix of communities. So here is a little more colour from four more that helped build Fremantle. I noticed recently that Wray Avenue is having an open day on Saturday, October 26th. You cannot miss the sign on top of the Galati's Tricolori Toyota. This festival coincides with the annual Blessing of the Fleet the following day. Next weekend plans to be full of Italian flavour. https://www.facebo...ok.com/events/wray-ave-fremantle-wa-6160-australia/open-day-on-wray/520694322066940/ https://www.fremantlefestival.com.au//the-blessing-of-the/ The Orient Hotel is owned by Tony, an Englishman by birth, but many of his staff and customers are Irish, including Audrey and Dom. I have worked hard with the Orient Hotel and other neighbours to create a busy West End intersection at Henry and High Streets. Even though I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the Irish bride ships of the 1850s and 60s, the Irish are most famous in Fremantle for the six Fenians prisioners who made a daring escape from Fremantle to Boston aboard the Catalpa. The last two years there has been a Fenians Festival in Fremantle. https://www.facebook.com/feniansfestival/ Kerry Harmanis last year donated the sculpture Chimera by Susan Flavell to the city. Greek names such as Kailis and Kakulas appear on signage in the CBD and at Fishing Boat Harbour. I even bought my building on High Street from the Litis family - previously it had been called the Athena Lodge. The Kailis' have just re-opened their seafood restaurant down on the water. https://www.broadsheet.com.au//new-kailis-fish-market-open And being half Portuguese myself, I cant forget their community who were central to the Fremantle fishing industry. Unfortunately their club has gone. Vhils, the artist responsible for the mural of Dorothy Tangey, Australias first female senator, on the side of the Norfolk Hotel, is a young Portuguese man.
11.01.2022 Finally some movement in the right direction from the City of Fremantle, Simone McGurk and the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce. They have all started talking about what I have been asking for years - higher visibility of police officers (hopefully walking the beat), more social housing and better lighting in the CBD. As usual Brad Pettitt and Danicia Quinlans concerns are only for visitors - no mention of CBD resident safety concerns. https://freoview.wordpress.com//making-fremantle-a-safer-/

10.01.2022 This gorgeous woman, mother, business owner and friend is Natalie from Luce Del Sol on Wray Avenue. On the front page of today's Herald, Mayor Brad Pettitt describes his idea to have "another crack at the FAILED ARTS PRECINCT at Arthur Head." Natalie and her family rented one of the houses at Arthur Head for 19 years (until 2013). They paid full market rent of approximately $30,000 per year to the Council and never fell into arrears. They kept the house immaculate and they an...Continue reading
10.01.2022 I much prefer shopping on the street than on the Internet. Current trends have us doing over 10% of our shopping online, heading towards 30%. We have to double our urban population so our retailers survive. Homewares are something easily ordered from a catalogue but for me I actually want to feel the weight of a knife or see the quality of crockery. ... I get all of this from Scott, Kelly and Cheong at Home Provedore on Market Street. I pick up any camping utensils from them as well. They also sell recyclable gas cylinders for making bottles of soda water and reusable coffee mugs - cuts down on the waste! And since I dont drive - no pollution! (Please dont go to Garden City!)
10.01.2022 Cruise ship companies at it again? What information does the City of Fremantle request from the ships in port regarding waste recycling (almost all goes to land fill) and emissions (read the BBC report on small particulate matter)? 08.01.2022 https://www.smallbusiness.wa.gov.au//make-small-change-hel Let's hope Fremantle City Council gets behind this initiative and supports (but most importantly makes all its purchases from) our local businesses.
08.01.2022 After being forced over the winter by the AWU to retreat from its attempt to remove Art and Leisure Centre casual workers penalty rates, it appears that Fremantle Council has now joined the ranks of organizations such as the ABC and Woolworths after it has been revealed that the CoF have underpaid these same staff - some for as long as 7 years! Workers began receiving letters last week notifying them of incorrect pay. What is the total amount that struggling casual workers have been underpaid and how big a dent will this put in our struggling budget?
08.01.2022 Rachel Pemberton is offering a Sustainable Event Management Seminar, because as she says, Fremantle Council has a Sustainable Event Management Policy. The policy is to be commended - my friend Greg Brereton has being doing this for years at events such as the AFL and Formula One. But selling these Seminars as a Fremantle Councillor (from her Councillor FB Page no less) leaves a bad taste.
07.01.2022 After my post 2 days ago, the CIty of Fremantle has come clean about under paying its staff. 140+ staff weren't paid enough and the total bill will costs rate payers about $565,000. The Council didn't respond to the statement about the attempt to remove workers penalty rates 6 months ago - but the CoF is now obviously on the AWU's bad list and the union is watching them. (Edit: Apologies to the ASU staff, I have been writing that the AWU was protecting the workers - it was the ASU.) https://www.fremantle.wa.gov.au//21112019-city-fremantle-a
07.01.2022 Rachel was apt to late-night post to this page (my campaign page) during the last election. This is not how our elected representatives should act.
07.01.2022 Vic, moj novi deko! I'm having a great time getting to know residents on the campaign trail. Everyones response has been excellent and I look forward to Saturday.... Don't forget to get your votes in by Tuesday via the post (at the latest) or walk them to the library (at the Fremantle Oval) before close of business Friday or on Saturday to the Town Hall. Vote Julie Morgan for City Ward!
07.01.2022 For many years several attempts were made to run a cafe in the old tram workshop at the end of High Street under the Roundhouse. It was Sarah and Sean and their hard work that finally succeeded when they created Chalkies - which has since become a West End institution. (I had coffee with H G Nelson there one morning!) Sarah and Sean moved on 3 years ago and started High Street Dispensary in our building at 33 High Street.... Not being ones to sit still, 18 months ago they had the business nous to see an opportunity in Attadale and The Neighborhood is the result. I wanted the cafe to sit joyfully in its suburban context - using standard suburban materials in surprising ways. The residents of Attadale have embraced The Neighborhood. Fremantle desperately needs a residential base to strengthen its community and economy.
06.01.2022 The first picture is of South Africans queuing to vote in the first post-apartheid election. The baby-boomers and us Gen-X-ers lived through amazing times - collapse of apartheid, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen Square massacre. And today we have the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Please dont be cynical!... Your local election ballot means something - please vote by Tuesday by post or come to the Town Hall on Saturday.
06.01.2022 It’s a sick joke really...
05.01.2022 Kids make the best pamphleteers - 1. Theyre cheap. 2. Theyre at the right height for letterboxes. 3. The exercise means they go to sleep earlier. 4. It teaches them a trade (and that local elections and community are important!).... Please remember to vote by post by Tuesday October 15th or in person at the Fremantle Town Hall on Saturday October 19th.
03.01.2022 https://heraldonlinejournal.com/2019/03/01/green-champs/ Josie and Audrey care enough about our health and the planets well-being to risk it all and start the amazing Storehouse in South Fremantle. Instead of over-processed foods and plastic packaging, they offer the most nutritious and sustainably produced bulk foods in Fremantle.... I am proud to have helped these women in a small way realize their vision. And I continue to shop there regularly - its delicious!

03.01.2022 Community services are now being decimated - how about we dump the #ThisisFremantle campaign which has cost us a lot and not delivered. Other services to be axed - graffiti removal and verge cleanup.
02.01.2022 Courtney O'Connor, the owner of Fremantle Boost Juice, was kind enough to display one of my posters. Numerous other local business have also helped promote my campaign for City Ward. I am most grateful for their support.
01.01.2022 The hard working volunteers and I are down at the Town Hall. Come, drop in and say hello. Jules
