20.01.2022 If you ask if there’s a difference between a wild blueberry and a cultivated blueberry, you’ve never had a wild blueberry before. Low bush plants produce small, round berries with an intense flavour that cannot be replicated in cultivated blueberries. They grow in the wild, usually on rocky outcrops, and are labour-intensive and time-consuming to harvest. They are also worth every cent, when we consider the nutrient and flavour punch of each gem of goodness. Wild blueberries... are incredibly healthy for you to eat. All blueberries have high levels of antioxidant, phytonutrients, in particular a flavanoid called anthocyanin that gives blueberries their namesake pigment. While most of the research done around dietary antioxidants is still relatively new, they have been shown to protect against inflammation, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases. The antioxidants are concentrated mostly in the skin of a blueberry, and because wild blueberries are small and dense, one cup of wild blueberries can contain almost twice the antioxidants as a cup of cultivated blueberries. Wild blueberries are also a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. If you like to eat fresh raw blueberries, you’ll probably have to stick with farm-raised: Wild blueberries are highly perishable, and almost the entire crop is frozen. 20.01.2022 Pink blossoms of nectarines is a sign that spring is already here. Nectarines often develop problems with fungal diseases such as leaf curl. Keep the ground beneath the trees raked up and clean, especially during winter months.... Prune and destroy infected plant parts as they appear. If disease problems are severe, maintain tree health and vigor by cutting back more fruit than normal, watering regularly (avoiding wetting the leaves if possible) and apply an organic fertilizers high in nitrogen.

11.01.2022 In front of a wall of beautiful nasturtiums (or nasturtian). Not only do they provide such lovely flowers and can be a highlight to anyone’s garden, but did you know you can eat its leaves and flowers? They have a nice mustardy taste. A favourite recipe of mine is to stuff the nasturtium flowers with blue cheese mixed together with 1 tsp of cognac, or according to taste. As simple as that. Nasturtiums are a great companion plant for vegetables and roses. They are also Natur...e’s natural pest-controller because they can attract aphids away from other, more valuable plants. As the aphids grow, they in turn attract lady bugs and other aphid-eating insects so that the problem often resolves itself, generally leaving other plants aphid-free. Not only do nasturtiums have beautiful flowers that add gorgeous colour to a garden, that can be used to create a delicious appetiser such as the above, and are a natural pest-controller, but nasturtiums are an attraction to pollinators such as bees. And we all know the role bees play in Nature. Hope you enjoy these beautiful plants as I do. See more
