24.01.2022 A few heads of foraged elderflower that April risked life and limb to collect for me! Enough to make some syrup to go in a cake.

23.01.2022 See you tomorrow morning @farmgatemarket - from 8.30.

23.01.2022 It can take a few goes before your homemade crumpets resemble crumpets! But who’s going to worry about having to make a few batches to try and perfect your technique. Even if they look a bit wonky they will taste great. A decent crumpet ring does make a big difference and these are the best. I love that they are still hand made on machinery dating back to the 1930s and that they are beautiful and functional. Each set comes with a recipe and care instructions.

23.01.2022 These florentines are packed with things I love - Turkish delight, pistachios and the much maligned glacé cherries. All brought together with a layer of dark chocolate.

22.01.2022 With so much produce available I could be baking and eating 24/7! It does mean all sorts of deliciousness for this Sunday’s @farmgatemarket. Galettes with @wolfesberryfarm gooseberries, Camembert and caramelised onion and for something sweet #huonvalley stone fruit with a hint of lime and rosemary. See you Sunday

22.01.2022 Late breakfast on the deck, in the sun after a bit of baking this morning. Stunning Spring day and maybe warm enough to open the door and the windows!

22.01.2022 These popular savoury loaves are back @farmgatemarket tomorrow morning. This weeks flavour - pumpkin & kale, both #glutenfree and #dairyfree

21.01.2022 It’s quite therapeutic making marmalade. There’s no short cuts to shredding the peel so you just listen to an audiobook and settle into it!

21.01.2022 It’s a cinnamon bun kind of day!

17.01.2022 I was walking down the road earlier in the week and noticed the bulrushes are starting to sprout again. They always remind me of my grandma who had them in a vase along with dried honesty seed pods. They’re round and flat and papery when they’re dried. So when I saw this whimsical bunch of spring blooms from @cosmos.and.kale included a couple of sprigs of still green seed pods I knew they were for me! Apparently they’re having a bit of a revival which is so good to see and I think I’ll add them to the list of things I need to plant in the garden.

17.01.2022 I managed to get some of the freshest beetroot this morning from @scrubbyhillfarm and they have turned into the most brilliantly coloured crispbread dough.

17.01.2022 When I was @farmgatemarket a couple of weeks ago, @the_tassie_hemp_shop had the stall next to me. I bought some of their hemp hearts and have used them to make these little carrot and coriander crackers. Vegan and gluten free, they’re not only good for you but they’ve got heaps of flavour. I’ll have packets for sale this coming Sunday at Farmgate Market.

17.01.2022 Gorgeous sunrise this morning on the way to @farmgatemarket . The drive along the Huon River is always stunning regardless of the time of day or the weather.

16.01.2022 It’s not the weekend without cake! Sweet treats available tomorrow morning @farmgatemarket - pistachio, cardamom and lemon; pumpkin, orange and poppyseed; cherry almond slice and plenty more. @ Farm Gate Market

16.01.2022 Crispbreads made with rye and spelt flours and a few cumin seeds. I make a big batch because they last forever, except they never do!

16.01.2022 Sweet treats for @farmgatemarket tomorrow.

16.01.2022 For just a short time, cherries, raspberries and red currants are all in season making it possible to whip up a batch of Queen Henrietta Maria’s marmalade of cherries from @dianahenryfood brilliant book, Salt Sugar Smoke. If you only have one preserving book this should be it. Today is a jam makers perfect day! Cool and overcast making it a great day to be in the kitchen and an abundance of local produce to experiment with.

14.01.2022 Savoury loaves - gluten and dairy free and packed with flavour. Available tomorrow morning along with lots of other goodies @farmgatemarket

14.01.2022 The best hummus I’ve ever eaten was @shayarestaurant in New Orleans. The texture is quite sublime, light and silky smooth. I had a go at making it, the recipe is in Alon Shaya’s book. It’s definitely a special occasion hummus, involving quite a few steps including removing the skins from the chick peas. Needless to say it hasn’t become a regular item. This version, with far fewer steps is from #ottolenghiflavour. The addition of fresh ginger is great and the aromatics on top add a little bomb of flavour. And I made pita bread! No more complaints that there’s nothing to eat in this house!!!!

13.01.2022 It turns out that 350 dandelion flowers wasn’t as many as I thought! That’s how many I need for the dandelion blossom syrup for @darra.goldstein recipe from her book Beyond the North Wind. The recipe caught my eye the other day when I was browsing through the book and there are dandelions everywhere at the moment so it’s was perfect timing. The number of flowers seemed a bit daunting so I thought I could perhaps make a half batch, turns out I’ve had to scale the recipe up. So dandelion blossom syrup is today’s kitchen experiment. There’s going to be a lot of it so

13.01.2022 Preserved lemons would have to be the simplest of preserves to make. I had some quite small lemons so I was able to keep them whole and still fit them in the jar. I just cut them into quarters but still attached at the base, packed them with salt and filled a few jars. Over a few days the lemons release their juice and I just top this up with more lemon juice or water to make sure that the lemons are covered. If your lemons are bigger I just cut them into quarters making it easier to pack them into a jar. There need a couple of months to mature before they’re ready to use. And after that they just last for ages.

12.01.2022 Vegan treats for this Sunday’s @farmgatemarket. Herby, garlicky sweet potato galettes and chickpea rolls full of flavour. @ Farm Gate Market

10.01.2022 It feels like the oven has been running 24/7 for the past couple of weeks with Christmas goodies rolling out. It’s been smelling delicious and it’s tempting not to keep sampling! These chocolate fruit Christmas cakes are delicious - moist and fruity with chunks of chocolate and a healthy glug of brandy. These and plenty of other Christmas treats will be available this coming Sunday @farmgatemarket.

06.01.2022 Everywhere you go there are flowers, blossoms and new growth. Loving Spring.

06.01.2022 A mild winter’s day, clear blue skies, snow on the ground and views for ever.

03.01.2022 On days like today when it’s overcast and cold it’s nice to know spring isn’t far away!

02.01.2022 New additions to the household
