25.01.2022 I was fortunate to meet and spend a pleasant time in the studio/shop of @delvene_cockatoo_collins_art on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). She makes beautiful art printed on linen and paper as well as displays of cultural items and information #print #art #artist #minjerribah #stradbrokeisland #aboriginal #indigenous #quandamooka #craft
24.01.2022 As part of NAIDOC celebrations, I volunteered to facilitate an art activity in my friend’s year 2 class. Always was always will be is expressed through depicting our very own North Queensland dinosaur, the cassowary. We had so much fun mixing colours, cutting shapes, talking and sticking all sorts of materials. What better way to interact with beautiful little children??? #art #illustration #naidoc #cassowary #creativity #collage #painting #education #mentalhealth
24.01.2022 Australian Tree of Life: birthday card for someone special. Hope you had a good one! I love the twisty branches and the smooth bark of the blackbutt gum, eucalyptus pilularis, in our back yard... a magnificent tree visited by hundreds of birds every day...nature is lovely! #eucalyptus #gum #treeoflife #tree #watercolour #art #illustrator

23.01.2022 Frida...I tried to capture her unique character, her style, her strength through adversity and pain and her creativity using recycled and hoarded materials. She liked blue because she felt it protected her. #collage #painting #art #artist #frida #fridakahlo #illustration #illustrator #juliehaysom #juliehaysomartandillustration #recycledart #recycle #reuse #portrait
23.01.2022 Illustrating health resources allows me to express secondary concepts such as diversity and communication avenues. This is for a renal health booklet. #illustration# drawing #portrait #health #indigenous
22.01.2022 Paperbark: painting at Amity, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). Getting more adventurous due to practicing art instead of thinking about it! Gouache, pencil, feather, bark, sand sprinkles. It makes me feel good! Interpretation rather than representation. Using materials at hand. #stradbrokeisland #painting #art #artist #minjerribah #queensland #gouache #watercolour
22.01.2022 One of the opportunities of my commissioned illustration work is to practice portraying people from many different cultures. I have lived amongst Indigenous people since my first education department posting at Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Drawing Aboriginal faces has become second nature. In fact without intending to, the faces I draw from my mind (such as this middle aged man) sometimes end up resembling people I know! #aboriginal #Indigenous #portrait #artist #illustrator #drawing #portraitart
21.01.2022 Nearly completed my latest mixed media work. For a while everything looked flat and uninteresting but a beach combing at beautiful Mission Beach opened the creative gates again and I could move out of the rut! #collage #papercrafts #papercutting #beach #reef #art #artist #illustrator #juliehaysom #missionbeach
20.01.2022 I have never seen these cattle before! Humbug lollies. #NSW #backroadstravel #cattle #illustrator #sketch
19.01.2022 Operation Lime Juice! Our small tree bestows wonderful gifts every year. Each bottle contains 15-20 limes (think of that every time you drink a bottle of juice). Exercise for the shoulders. Changing hands develops ambidextry. I develop a pressing rhythm and choose tools that enhance the operation such as a tea strainer and a plastic spoon (closer tines) to extract seeds. I will soon need a deep freeze to hold all my bottles (allow for expansion while freezing). Several neighbours have each a bag of limes. I still have hot lime Indian pickle from last year. With a packet of hot chilli powder there's only so much you can eat and give away. I think salted preserved limes will be next. I still have a bowl of limes left waiting and there's more under the tree!
19.01.2022 Characters are starting to appear from blank paper!
19.01.2022 Birthday card. I’m obsessed with our eucalyptus pilularis in the back yard so it’s the subject of many of my current artworks. #eucalyptus #art #painting #watercolour #tree #artist #illustrator
18.01.2022 Going through old art journals I found my on-the-spot sketches from a visit to Undara Lava Tubes, a wonderful experience. The environment was primeval and campfire singalongs with Ewamian hosts were lots of fun. It’s important to explore with line when recording from life. My journals are messy, full of overlapping and sometimes disconnected images. They demonstrate my raw response to what I perceive and are really only for my edification. Because they are immediate impressions without intention to make a polished artwork, they are often my most insightful works. #undara #queensland #sketch #pencil #drawing #artjournal #portraitdrawing #art #artist

15.01.2022 Sometimes it’s not quite what is needed so the design needs to be amended. Satisfaction for the client is paramount! I like this aspect of my illustration work...it keeps me from being complacent and improves the quality. #illustrator #artist #portrait #portraitart #watercolour #ink #drawing #sketch #education
15.01.2022 Poster 2- policy of Protectionism and Segregation (1890's-1950's). My contribution as an illustrator to the Black Lives Matter discourse. 25 years ago I illustrated 5 posters for Qld Health. A few years after that I repeated and expanded to 13 for Education Qld. Rations of tea, flour, sugar (diabetes on a plate!) which replace natural healthy traditional diet. 'Troublesome' Aboriginies rounded up and shifted in chains to penal settlements such as Palm Island, Yarrabah and Woo...rabinda. People confined to reserves and only allowed out on special permits (dubbed Dog Tags). People made to pray to a god they knew nothing about. Low wages which were often withheld...yes we had slavery! Introduction of non indigenous animals destroy traditional lands and waterholes. A traditional creator being, the Rainbow serpent circling outside but still present. Power and control forcibly taken from Aboriginal people. Protectionist policies designed to 'smooth the pillow of a dying race', in other words institutionalised genocide. The pencil drawings are copied from real photos except the 'fat controller' who I borrowed from Thomas the Tank Engine characters. See more
14.01.2022 My illustration for an educational resource about kidney health with a Queensland Indigenous focus. I have emphasised the healthy aspects of outdoor physical activity, fresh organic home grown plant foods and companionable productive family activity. The setting is recognisable to locals but is a ‘general’ North Queensland scene. #illustration #artist #watercolour #family #garden #indigenous #tropics #renalhealth #health #healthyfood
14.01.2022 Two days of sweet little Edmonton Gold tomatoes and other organic deliciousness from my plot at Edmonton Community Garden. It’s a tropical winter evening and there is abundance. The tomatoes are like triffids, engulfing everything in their wake. Greens in the form of kales, aibeka (PNG highly nutritious perennial spinach) Asian sweet pawpaws (papaya), an Ethiopian cabbage with a view of Mt Isley and a tropical gourd bean all grow like crazy. It’s my beautiful place to go for organic health and happiness. #communitygarden #growfood #organic #sustainability #foodgarden

14.01.2022 This is my contribution to the #blacklivesmatter discourse. Over 25 years ago I was commissioned to illustrate 5 posters (a timeline of European/Indigenous interactions) for the Rural Health Training Scheme for Queensland Health Department. It was my first colour commission as a freelancer after several years of black ink illustrations for Education Queensland ESL resources. These images make up the first poster "Invasion". I was rather overwhelmed with the long list I ...was required to depict. After some rumination, an image popped into my mind of the Union Jack gobbling all the traditional lives, culture and landscapes of the peoples of "terra nullius". The portraits of Aboriginal people were inspired by some of my friends and family. The huge trees are the forest giants that were felled for money so that no subsequent generation could even have a concept of what was lost. The river of destruction flows from the Union Jack with guns and poisons and feral animals with intention for genocide. My next posting will be showing the government policy of "Protectionism" #blm #indigenous #blacklivesmatters #aboriginal #invasion #illustration #art #artist #illustrator #1770 #1788 See more
14.01.2022 Yummo! My first decent composite harvest since the tropical summer. To date I've had snake beans, snake beans, snake beans and a bit of other stuff. Here are: snake beans (say no more), Kang Kong (water spinach), pumpkin tips (delicious fried with butter and garlic), Lebanese eggplant and my first big pumpkin. I've been watching and waiting to harvest. No accurate scales but I think 5-6 kilograms so I think it's ready. What's for dinner? #veges #foodgardening #sustainability #selfsufficiency #communitygarden #tropicalgardening #growyourownfood
13.01.2022 Plenty of sheep on our road trip! This group (flock?) sheltering in a tree’s shade looked like a bunch of grubs. #sheep #regionalnsw #art #artist #illustration #drawing #sketch
12.01.2022 Poster 3. (Qld Dept Health and Qld Dept education commissions from more than 25 years ago). My contribution to Black Lives Matter. These posters in collaboration with Colin Higgins depict Policies of Integration: Aborigines forced to live like ‘whites’, children stolen from mothers, people forced to leave traditional homelands to work for little or no wages, Christianity more prevalent, confusion with identity as traditions subsumed by white culture. You can see the differences between the 2 posters. Indigenous artists provide greater depth and cultural perspective. The making of these posters were a great education to me. Art as education! #indigenous #aboriginal #blm #blacklivesmatter #education #art #artist #illustration #illustrator
11.01.2022 Some artistic environmental forms as I went for a walk past Cairns Botanical Gardens. Pandanus, palm trunk and fungi eyes. It’s the first time I heard a bird call and then found that it was a little djarragun (gungandji language for: orange footed scrub fowl). #tropics #farnorthqueensland #pandanus #cairns #cairnsbotanicgardens
11.01.2022 Christmas pressie portrait commission. I think I’m liking creating these A4 sized water coloured mementos! If you would like to purchase a custom portrait DM me.

10.01.2022 Minjerribah artworks. The best job in the world, creating resources for the Indigenous owned camping kids’. Club. Plus I could not resist being drawn in to the land and sea for my own art practice so I’ve used watercolour brushes on my IPad to experiment with seascape memories. #minjerribah #art #artist #watercolour #seascape #whale #turtle #illustrator

06.01.2022 Amity afternoon at Minjerribah. Watercolour sketch realising how out of practice at live drawing I have become. It’s very nice to soak up this beautiful place in paint! #minjerribah #watercolour #amity #beach #stradbrokeisland #queensland #art #artist #painting

04.01.2022 One of my iconic songs is The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell. This project (copperplate rendering my favourite writings) has impelled me to paint carousel ponies, something I have wanted to do forever! I cannot believe it took me this long!!! I actually became quite emotional creating this page as I have watched my own kids going through the seasons of time and now my grandkids are there as well. Life is sad and happy. We are all trying to embrace and adjust to the seasons, especially in these turbulent times.

03.01.2022 I am trying to relearn copperplate, my first cursive script as a 7 year old. I semi unlearned it when I illustrated the Queensland Modern Cursive Script teacher's handbook in the 1980's for Education Queensland. Since then my writing is a (neat) mush between the two scripts. I'm improving slowly! My brother @oh_so_slow_mark gave me a book gift of essays by Henry Thoreau when I was youthful. Revisiting old books during Covid times. Eternal Walden translated to Eternal Eacham! #illustration #copperplate #watercolour #thoreau #henrydavidthoreau #art #juliehaysomartandillustration #juliehaysom
02.01.2022 Postcard making again...so much fun searching, choosing, cutting sticking and penning! If you would like me to snail mail you a mystery postcard, comment and tag a friend. I'll choose someone and DM you for your address. #collage #art #illustration #artist #postcard #snailmail
01.01.2022 Another snail mail collages and drawn postcard I have a lot of fun making...escape from lockdown! #collage #postcard #art #artist #illustrator #juliehaysomartandillustration #juliehaysom
