25.01.2022 Miss NAIDOC Perth portraits: Tamika Ponton ‘My name is Tamika Ponton, I am a 30-year-old, proud Ballardong Noongar woman from Goomalling, with ties to Whadjuk and Yued country. I grew up in Perth, and am one of five children. Family is an important part of my life. My mother is an amazing non-Aboriginal woman who has supported and embraced Aboriginal culture and helped build me into a strong, proud Aboriginal woman. My dad has always ensured that I know who I am, where I... came from and made sure that I have a strong connection to family, country and culture. Being an Aboriginal woman is the core of who I am, it is my strength and my resilience, it is something that no one can take away. I just completed my final year of medicine at the University of Western Australia and am due to graduate in December. Through university outreach programs and the Follow the Dream program, I realised that studying medicine was a possibility and something I could actually do. But my journey into medicine, and where I am now hasn’t been an easy one. As I started studying medicine my passion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health amplified, and I realised that this was all I wanted to do. However, I was young when I first started, straight from high school and I wasn’t as studious as I needed to be. This combined with a lot of other things that were happening in my life made me realise it just wasn’t the right time to study medicine. I deferred my medical degree and began to study nursing, as I loved health and wanted make a difference. I started working as a nurse and my passion for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health got stronger and I wanted to achieve so much more. So I returned to study medicine at UWA. Medicine has given me an amazing opportunity to explore my passion and I wanted to be a part of Miss NAIDOC to help break out of my comfort zone, build on my self-confidence and develop leadership skills that I can use as a junior Doctor. I want to be a positive role model within the Aboriginal community, paving the way for future generations to become amazing leaders. I want to be able to use my voice to speak up and challenge people’s perceptions surrounding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and begin to generate those conversations that will help create change. I want to be a part of a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people don’t need to travel away from country in order to receive the services that they need. My future goal is to specialise in a surgical field and work across Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities’. This incredible woman is going places and has shown that anything in life is POSSIBLE

19.01.2022 This morning, I had two appointments, spaced a little apart and so I decided to head down to Scarborough Beach in between to photograph a bit of surf, as it was pointless heading home. Anyway, I was photographing some great action when the sweetest little scene unfolded in front of me that of a dad teaching his little son how to surf. I was witnessing a right of passage. The little guy was so excited to get into the water and when the first wave hit, he headed straight ba...ck to shore. His dad sat patiently with him, slowly coaxing him back into the water and when he was ready, he bravely ventured back in for more. The look on his little face when he caught his first wave was just priceless - and even more so the look of his proud dad, beaming from ear to ear. It really made my day and I only wish that I knew who they were so that I could pass on these images to that awesome dad. I had to leave to catch my next appointment, but if you know who they are, feel free to put them in touch with me . . . @ Scarborough Beach See more
18.01.2022 Awesome news Our little surfer and his dad have been located and they loved the images and had no idea that I was even there, snapping away. The power of social media and the universe is pretty awesome, as I was on my way to an appointment with my dentist Tony when I stopped to take these images and it was my friend Donna, his wife, who teaches the little guy who identified them. What were the chances of that happening? Happy Friday everyone . . . #perthnow #surf #sc...arboroughbeach #scarborough #fatherandson See more
18.01.2022 I love the fact that my camera opens up the opportunity for me to meet and converse with so many interesting and diverse people who I ordinarily would have walked straight past. Sometimes the greatest adventure is simply a conversation Amadeus Wolfe
16.01.2022 We have just returned home from our inaugural Lens Travellers photography tour and I am still on such a high. We could never have imagined a more wonderful group of ladies to launch our new business venture with and it is most certainly the first of many more to come. Led by my amazing friend Lynn Gail and myself, we dipped our toes in the ocean and photographed beach scapes, climbed sand dunes and sat in the swirling wind at dusk photographing fairy floss skies, met and ph...otographed some of the colourful locals in the pubs and on the beaches, had a mini portrait location session and played dress ups, photographed the Phallictites or Pinnacles as they are better known at dusk and then giggled for hours under the stars photographing the Milky Way. It certainly was a trip to remember! Here are a few images (and behind the scenes images) to show you a little of what we got up to. See more

14.01.2022 Miss NAIDOC Perth portraits: Marjorie Hansen ‘I am a 28-year-old, Whadjuk, Balardong Aboriginal Woman from Perth, Western Australia. I am a mother of three and come from a large family of 10 children. My childhood was so much fun and crazy adventurous. I understand the importance of resilience, community and am always striving to be the best version of myself to inspire within my community. I believe the land owns Aboriginal people and every aspect of our lives is c...onnected to it. I want for all people to respect and understand our culture and from there have a greater attachment to the land (Budjar), and to work in partnerships to create a positive and sustainable future for all. We work closely with the Noongar community to preserve Noongar booja (country), Kaartadjin (knowledge), and wongin (language), as well as to identify and protect sites of cultural significance. My cultural background is my pride and strength. I believe that channelling my culture in my stride with education can empower and enable others to do the same. By continuous learning, self-development, connection to the community and culture, and taking every opportunity that comes my way - I believe that these are the tools to breakdown stereotypes and stigmas on the Aboriginal community and people. "Knowledge is Power" I want to be the reason other's seek change and want to be a better version of themselves. All it takes is that one person to make that difference and I hope I can be that person, mentor, ear, that's always here to remind us of who and what we can become with the right guidance. Racism is something I have faced throughout my life. Indigenous youth, in particular, continue to confront racism and discrimination and are marginalized in society. Still, when they have a sense of belonging and a strong cultural identity, they become resilient, powerful individuals. I would use my past experiences and knowledge of culture and in education to influence the youth of all Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal Australians. Being who we are is a blessing, and I feel privileged to be an Aboriginal woman. I believe that my culture is here to guide me and that connecting back to land will bring you stability and calmness through life's many hurdles, as it has brought me through mine. I brought this emu egg along that my Uncle Phillip from Collie painted as it is very special to me. It includes a landscape sunset of our land (bujia) as well as an emu and a kangaroo.’
14.01.2022 Miss NAIDOC Perth portraits: Kaedisha Westberg ‘My name is Kaedisha Westberg (Yarran-Pickett), and I'm a young 18-year old Whadjuk, Ballardong woman from Perth, Western Australia. I am the eldest out of 21 grandchildren and out of three siblings, and I come from a powerful hard working great-grandmother, great- grandfather and grandfather, Sue Bennell and Peter and Angus Yarran. ... I graduated year 12 in 2019 and during this time I have been playing netball, as it is something I am really passionate about, so much so that netball allowed me to travel to the Gold Coast in 2017 to compete in the international competition and study my netball scholarship in year 12. Since graduating from high school, I have been working at Australia Post doing a Certificate III in Customer Engagement and have started my Diploma in Nursing at Marr Moorditj in August 2020. Working full time as an Indigenous trainee, being the only Indigenous trainee, I have faced racism internally and externally of work and when in my officer role, I want to bring attention to racial discrimination in working environments. I applied for Miss NAIDOC Perth as I wanted to show that strong, empowering, hardworking Indigenous women do exist. Another reason for applying for Miss NAIDOC Perth was to be a positive role model for not only my siblings and younger siblings but for all the youth in all parts of Australia. I want all young Indigenous to not be ashamed of being aboriginal and to wear it with pride and respect. Being aboriginal is who I am and who I will always be, I'm not ashamed, I am proud of my culture, and that's how I want the next generation to feel. In the future, I aspire to be a police officer to bring culture into our justice system. I want to develop programs for our young children/adults to inspire them to succeed in a career in the police force and to not let anything get in the way. I want to bring body positivity to all women in this program. I believe that the Miss NAIDOC Perth program gives our community a chance to show a positive image of our Indigenous women who are wanting to make a difference alongside many strong empowering women. Not only is Miss NAIDOC a leadership and empowerment program, but it is a platform to give young ladies a voice to bring awareness to our culture and beliefs.’

12.01.2022 This afternoon, I led a wonderful photography walk through the streets of Northbridge as part of the Photo Inspo festival. I gave each of my participants a brief and they filled them all beautifully. We also came across a gorgeous young girl from the Netherlands who feeds the birds weekly and it made for some wonderful action to photograph... she truly is the bird whisperer! Loved every minute of my time out... it was food for the soul.

08.01.2022 I am not even sure where to begin in summarising my year gone by. I feel like 2019 was my lucky year - and yes, I know that the saying goes that the harder we work, the more luck we have. I did work incredibly hard, but still feel lucky - lucky for the amazing people that I met on my journey and the beautiful new friendships that I made and lucky to still be doing what I love doing - each and every day. I definitely put myself out there a little more and it certainly p...aid off. I guess that only by putting myself out there, did I get to roll the dice a little more often. Some of the highlights of my year included winning the AIPP WA Epson Travel Photographer of the Year and being named as a finalist in the Documentary category, placing fourth in the Australia/New Zealand Mono Awards, achieving my best results at the AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards and placing third in the Fremantle International Portrait Photography awards. On the travel front, I got to go back to South Africa and explore new and wonderful places and had an incredible adventure in Mexico City, as the Australian Pan-American Maccabiah Games team photographer - experiences I will never forget. I had a few magazine features, a few more speaking gigs, met up a little more regularly with my photographer buddies and feel like I have a brilliant network of support from a warm and wonderful community of photographers who I am proud to call my friends. We all have each others backs and its so darn awesome! Thank you to my wonderful clients and friends for your support this year. I am eternally grateful always. And so, cheers to 2019 and hello 2020. I wish you all great things in the coming year

04.01.2022 Miss NAIDOC Perth portraits: Ashley Humes ‘My name is Ashley Humes, and I am a 21-year-old Noongar and Sri Lankan woman, born and raised in Perth. I come from a diverse background, my mother's family from Colombo, Sri Lanka, and my father's side is Noongar. What I have learnt so far from my family is that I have connections throughout Whadjuk & Ballardong country. ... I've always been connected to family and have always been proud of my Aboriginal heritage. I love to learn about my culture, my family, my traditions, my language, and my cultural journey so far is exciting. I believe that culture is life and life-long learning. Continuous learning in any sphere is vital for growth and change, which is why I love learning new things, it is an essential aspect that I strive to embody throughout not only my culture but through my career. In 2017, I had the opportunity to work as a trainee for Woodside Energy and gain my Certificate III in Business Administration. Once I had finished my Certificate III, I realised that I wanted a career change, so I applied to go to university and study something that has always been of interest to me. I am now studying Criminology and Justice, majoring in Family and Child Support. Currently, I work at the Aurora Education Foundation. My journey within Aurora has been a budding foundational time. I began as a student participating in the program through high school. In 2018, I got the opportunity to return as a mentor for a High School Program at the Aurora Education Foundation. After building such exceptional rapport with the students as a mentor, I wanted to connect more with their families. Fast forward to now, and I am currently working full-time as a Community Engagement Facilitator for Perth. My passion is working with Aboriginal youth, as I believe they are the next generation of leaders. Working with Aurora has empowered me to not only gain the skills required to work within this space but also inspired me to see myself as a leader and has helped me realise my dreams of helping our youth transition back into the community after being incarcerated and advocating for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within the justice system. I want better outcomes for my people, and I believe I possess the skills, knowledge, strength, drive and ambition to make an impact on our youth.’
