25.01.2022 You would be forgiven for thinking you have already seen this! After I had finished Nathaniel's portrait, something kept bothering me: I had done a light background and, because he is so fair, he was a bit lost in it. I decided to take him out of the frame and darken the background. This was to make him 'pop' a bit. He is, after all, a popping kind of little person! Apologies for posting this again and thanks everyone for taking an interest in my art. I really appreciate your support and encouraging words. I am just a learner. So ... for the second time ... 'Nathaniel', charcoal, 30 x 40cm.

20.01.2022 I just thought I would put a selection of progress photos of a typical portrait on here for those who are interested in the process. This slideshow is of Russell Coight. A portrait such as this will take about 18 hours to complete. I initially do a rough line drawing, then start with the eyes, or in this case, the hat, then the eyes. I usually move down the face and then do the hair. Generally the clothing is next followed by the background. I use charcoal powder and penc...ils to do the tones, textures, and details. I use various tools to blend and erase. I don't use white pencil, white charcoal, white gel pen, etc. The paper is archival quality and has a light 'tooth' to hold the charcoal. If you are interested in following my progress as I create each of my pieces, please follow me on Instagram. My account name is juliethomasart. See more
