25.01.2022 RRL Reads: Sunset Park by Paul Auster. Miles Heller is a young man in self-imposed exile. For seven years he has been running away, until he finds hope in Florida, but the hope is complicated, and he is forced to return to New York to squat in an old house in Sunset Park, a neighbourhood in Brooklyn. There is a cast of characters around the enigmatic Miles, and this book is about all of them, including New York City; how they live, love, work, hope, despair, against the backdrop of the 2008 recession. It is a moving character exploration, with deep dives into the characters' passions - baseball, books, and film. It's about connection, and meaning; it gives no answers, might even be a little bleak, and yet utterly compelling. Available in print, large print, and eAudio (via indyreads) From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

24.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Shetland Island series by Ann Cleeves. Audiobooks are the best way to go for books set in Scotland! I was very familiar with the television version of this book, which mattered very little as it turned out to be very different. Jimmy Perez, though in quite a different time of life and situation to the television version, is as thoughtful and appealing a character, Sandy Wilson is little changed, and plays a big part, and all the characters are well drawn. The mystery is, as ever, intriguing, the setting atmospheric, and it is accent heaven. You can get the whole series in various formats, much of the book series is different to the television adaptation, so it is worth experiencing both. From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

23.01.2022 RRL Reads: Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #3) by Jessica Townsend. We're back for more colourful, sweet, imaginative, daring adventures with Morrigan and her friends. As Morrigan begins to learn more about being a wundersmith, a nasty illness is infecting wunimals, bringing fear and confusion for Nevermoor. Complete with librarians, this is a fun episode in a delightful series. From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

21.01.2022 RRL Reads: Cedar Valley by Holly Throsby. Life in a small town is well captured in this story. People knowing each others business, small businesses and the characters who inhabit a town made me smile. The mystery in the story was interesting and was a slow reveal throughout the story. The ending was a disappointment - there were things left to explain - but that may have been the author's purpose - to leave the reader to connect all the dots in a more solid way. Available in print and eBook (BorrowBox) From Cynthia at RRL HQ #rrlreads

19.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Bus on Thursday by Shirley Barrett. This was a crazy read. Eleanor moves to Talbingo to take up a teaching job and things go haywire. The story started with humour and then just went weird. There is a lot of swearing. The horror fell short, I think because Eleanor was portrayed as off balance before she arrived in the mountains - so was it creepy because of what was happening or was it all in Eleanor's head. Most of the situations were far fetched but it did make me want to see how the story ended. Available in print, and large print. From Cynthia at RRL HQ #rrlreads

17.01.2022 RRL Reads: Gathering Dark by Candice Fox. A killer, a thief, a crime lord and a cop working together to find a missing girl, this story has a cast of offbeat, flawed and original characters. I took a while to get into the story - but then it takes off and hurtles you along to the conclusion. Just suspend your reasoning and go along for the ride. Available in print, MP3 disc, eBook (BorrowBox and indyreads) and eAudio (BorrowBox). From Cynthia at RRL HQ #rrlreads

13.01.2022 RRL Reads: St Kilda Blues by Geoffrey McGeachin. The atmosphere of 60s' Melbourne is wonderfully created in this story. Police were tough and were not afraid to throw their weight around (both the good guys and the corrupt). Policeman Charlie Berlin is asked to do a parallel investigation into a series of missing girls. Not only is he running out of time to find the last missing girl, but he has to deal a police corruption commission and the ghosts of his past. It was compell...ing to read the development of the killer alongside the investigation - he was a nasty fellow. This story was not only about solving the mystery but also how Charlie was still haunted by his WWII past and dealing with family life and tragedy, which added extra layers to the story. Available in print, CD and MP3 disc, and eAudio (BorrowBox). From Cynthia at RRL HQ #rrlreads See more

11.01.2022 RRL Reads: There was Still Love by Favel Parrett. This is the story of twin, Czech women, separated by the war, told by their grandchildren; one in Prague, and one in Melbourne. It is a lyrical, moving, bittersweet story of family, hope, home, and belonging. From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

07.01.2022 RRL Reads: This Mournable Body by Tsitsi Dangarembga. Having read both Nervous Conditions and The Book of Not, many years ago, I was keen to revisit Tambudzai and see what she was up to. Well, nothing good I’m afraid. The years have been unkind, and all of the promise of Tambu’s youth has come to nothing. She so desperately wants the success she feels owed, and struggles to get by. Life is hard in Zimbabwe, especially for women, and terribly complicated. This is a complex book, pretty bleak, sometimes hard to understand, and sad, but thought provoking, clever, and moving.

07.01.2022 We have three different sources of free eAudiobooks, as well as books on disc in the library! Great for many reasons including super short arms.

07.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. The Starless Sea is a lush, dreamlike, slowly beautiful story about love, friendship, meaning, time, fate, and mostly, about stories. It’s very bookish, deeply descriptive, and imaginative, telling many stories, alternately, slowly weaving them into one. I listened to the audio version, and it is beautifully done, though one accent in particular was not my favourite. It has a gorgeous sense of place, in New York City, and the world beneath, and was a beautiful, twisty, evocative, modern, yet nostalgic journey. Available in print, eBook, and eAudio (BorrowBox). From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

06.01.2022 RRL Reads: Early Riser by Jasper Fforde. Set in Wales, in an alternate history where humans hibernate through the intense winters, Early Riser is a satirical, dystopian thriller, and very funny. Charlie Worthing is a young person with few prospects, when he lands a job as a Winter Consul, staying up while the world sleeps, keeping the peace and investigating viral dreams. It’s a mystery filled with eccentric characters, hilarious details, social commentary, and a lot of heart. Jasper Fforde’s humour appeals to me very much, and while I found it a little slow to begin with, the delightful Charlie kept me going until the story enthralled me. I listened to the audiobook, and very much enjoyed the Welsh accent. Available in print, large print, and eAudio (BorrowBox). From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

06.01.2022 RRL Reads: My Purple Scented Novel by Ian McEwan. A gorgeous short story, read by the author in eAudio, about two friends who went to university together and maintained a friendship throughout their lives, despite differing rates of success on a similar path, and one extraordinary act of betrayal. Available in print, and eAudio (indyreads). From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

02.01.2022 RRL Reads: Weather by Jenny Offill. I really loved this book; funny, moving, thought-provoking, and fast paced. Lizzie works in a university library in New York City, a job which makes her kind of like a counsellor. She also needs these skills to support her mother, her brother with addiction problems, and a world gone mad. The style won't be for everyone - choppy, poetic, spare - but I loved the NYC setting, and the rumination on how to live, love, parent, and thrive in what seem like end times.
