25.01.2022 Some of you might know that last year I stepped into the role of Event Director at the d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards in Mudgeeraba. Earle who is 82 needed help. He b...uilt up and ran the awards for 16 years and it was time to think about how to keep it going. It’s a full not for profit. No one gets paid but the artists who win. All profits go back into making the awards better for the artists and the community. I knew it would be a huge commitment in time and energy but these awards have been such an important part of the GC arts. We don’t have a lot of art history here, but if there’s one art prize that we can call ours - it’s the d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards. For my own part, I also knew that I wanted to give back to the arts community that had given so much to me. Artable is the huge success it is today because of all of you Covid meant postponing 2020 but we are well into planning for June 2021 and we have brought in an amazing group to see us into the future. They are all local artists too who are in it for the right reasons - to give back. This is a group effort and we need your help. I want to see the arts community get behind this one with us - how? I’d love to see you enter the landscape, portrait or still life divisions but if you feel a bit intimidated then just help us get the word out! Entries are due 26 May and we are creating our first online gallery to promote and sell for you all around the world (so photos need to be submitted this year too!). Share this post to your own Facebook friends, tag a friend you think should enter, let your art groups know, comment below - this is how FB knows to circulate a post wider This is truly an award run by artists for artists and we are busting to hand out $20k in prizes when June comes around! Thanks everyone and I’m looking forward to seeing you all in June Gillian x Ps - this is last years $10k winner Kerry Nobbs. His paintings are enormous and you feel like you are stepping into them when you see them in real life!

25.01.2022 Check this post out! When I was teaching Folk Art/Decorative Art, in the tradition of Europe. Thanks Marion! FB gives us access to so many of our past connections. I bought in many mainland tutors to teach for me and didn’t we have fun?

24.01.2022 I felt energized to paint today. I am subscribed in an online workshop being hosted by Louise Fletcher. She does acrylic abstracts. Being the rebel that I am, ...I am using pastels. The assignment was to do a painting of a familiar subject using unfamiliar tools. I had made this paper a while ago using Arches hot press 140 lb, adhering an acid free novelty paper using clear pastel primer (has grit in it). I didnt think it would work, so I tossed it aside and never used it. Perfect for this assignment! Painted from life. "Pear Predicament", Pastel, 7" x 7" Mount Vision, Unison, Grumbacher (very old!), and Girault pastels

04.01.2022 A Bedouin Arab Oil on canvas, 1891 John Singer Sargent . I thought it would be nice to share a source of inspiration with you today. John Singer Sargent has l...ong been one of the great sources of inspiration for my painting approach, in portraits as well as figurative and even the landscape. . This is one of Sargents alla prima portrait studies done in one sitting, capturing the powerful head of a Bedouin Arab during his travels in North Africa. This is a portrait done for the joy and curiosity of art, not on commission or for a client. I love the unfinished quality of the work and the studied intensity of the gaze. I love the big brushstrokes. This is Sargent in his element, capturing character and vitality with the brush. . Who inspires you to create your best work? Is there an artist that pushes you forward? Let me know! . #johnsingersargent #artinspiration #alainpicard #portraitpainting #artinstruction #revealingbeauty See more

02.01.2022 Portrait of Crystal (detail) 12x18 Pastel Study on sanded board . This past Saturday I gave a portrait demonstration via livestream for the Pastel Society of C...olorado. I asked my beautiful and articulate friend @cjoyellington to pose for the portrait, and her very talented husband @creativeellington photographed her for the portrait sitting reference. It was such a fun creative collaboration with my good friends and the resulting 2 hour portrait demo was an inspiring experience to share. . Thank you @cjoyellington for posing! You radiate light and hope in this moment. And thank you @creativeellington for photographing a beautifully lit pose! This was such a joy to paint in soft pastel! You two are a powerful couple. . To all my fellow artist friends, let me know if you would be interested in seeing a portrait study lime this come together on a YouTube lesson in the future. And keep sharing beauty and hope through your paintings in this extraordinary season. . #pastelportrait #portraitartist #portraitpainting #alainpicard #impressionism #portraitpainter #artofinstagram #standtogether #instagramart See more
