23.01.2022 Five years ago when Leong, Sifu Mike and Sifu Abe were still with the Institute. Sifu Leong was the school's Demo Team Lead at the time. Sifu Abe presented and ran the demo and Sifu Mike was our Stunt Coordinator, which incidentally is his actual day job, so back then we had a real Professional on our team!

23.01.2022 Taken a few years ago after lunch out with Sigung. He loved Asian food and pho was generally his favoured choice for lunch on our regular Friday "Lunch with Sigung" outings. Afterwards we would often go to a particular establishment nearby for coffee and dessert. Sigung loved his sweets! I had to take this shot very quickly, because about ten seconds later, he had completely demolished the soft serve. #takykimura

21.01.2022 Some memories from a few years ago at The Barn in 2016, with Sifu Abe, who was the regular Wednesday night Instructor at that time. Sigung Taky was in attendance as usual, keeping a watchful eye over us. At that class, Sigung showed us his favourite rear choke technique, demonstrating it on me and then encouraging me to try it on him. I even found a short video snippet of him and I from that night, which will be posted in the Videos section. In some of the other photos from t...hat night, Sigung Taky is also shown correcting our chi sau ("sticky hands") technique. Sigung was always a perfectionist in relation to our techniques, with a keen eye for detecting when we weren't performing those techniques to his satisfaction! 20.01.2022 In 2014 the Demo Team conducted two demonstrations at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle's Chinatown, both within the space of about a month. This one was conducted inside the museum and was more of an intimate, question-and-answer style of event. Sigung Taky was engaged and attentive during our demonstration; he wandered around the stage watching over us, and can be seen in one of the shots urging my fellow Demo Team members to concentrate their power and energy in their midsec...tion while they demonstrated chi sau (sticky hands), just like he always used to do during class at the Barn. To the surprise and delight of the audience, at the end of the Q&A Sigung arose from his chair to perform an impromptu demonstration of his own on me. Fortunately I was able to find some video of it and post it here. Sigung was 90 years old at the time and although the video's audio is poor, he can be seen explaining the technique to the audience, then taking me down a couple of times, fairly effortlessly. I remember that floor being pretty hard as he threw me onto it, twice. Great memories and a rare video of Sigung from a few years ago showing us how it's done! 18.01.2022 Over the years many overseas visitors would come to Seattle especially to pay their respects to Sigung and train with us. We warmly welcomed any visitor who took the time and effort to visit us in our corner of the US, as long as they didn't just come for a photo op. Sigung urged all visitors to participate to the best of their ability, and not just to stand around watching the class! On this particular Wednesday night Barn class we welcomed a particularly distinguished visit...or from Okinawa Japan, Sensei Kensho Tokumura (seated at Sigung's left), founder of the Tokushin Kobudo style of Okinawa Kobudo, who came with some of his American students. 16.01.2022 Some more pictures from the demo we did at the Wing Luke Museum five years ago to help kick off another year of their Bruce Lee exhibit. Sigung Taky was one of the guests of honour along with Linda Lee Cadwell, who travelled to Seattle to attend the proceedings. Old friends reunited again that year! I was Demo Team Lead of the Institute at the time, and Sifu Abe presented the demo with Sifu Mike coordinating the team's stunts. 15.01.2022 Resulting from an introduction from Sifu Abe, in 2016 I had the opportunity to meet Greglon Yimm Lee, son of the late Sifu James Yimm Lee. I met Greg at his home in Berkeley California, and as soon as we met, he opened up his storage unit (i.e garage) and clambered over lots of various items to show me some memorabilia and old training equipment of his father's. He then generously showed me some techniques from various martial arts disciplines (Iron Palm Gung Fu, JKD, etc) in... the garage of his apartment block, before taking me on a walking tour of his neighbourhood and around the nearby UC Berkeley campus. Over the next few hours he shared some stories about his father, and of his own childhood as a playmate of Brandon Lee. We ended the day by enjoying some of the best Chinese food I ever had in the US, at a restaurant near the university campus. A powerfully-built man with an easy smile, Sifu Greg is a master practitioner in his own right. During our impromptu garage training session, I felt his tremendous energy and power; this is one sexagenarian you definitely don't want to tangle with! Prior to Covid-pandemic-shutdown, Sifu Abe of our parent school in Seattle was scheduled to conduct a joint seminar with Sifu Greg in France this year; hopefully it can still occur sometime in the future. It was an absolute pleasure and honour to meet and spend some time with Greglon a few years ago; it remains one of the highlights of my martial arts journey thus far, and I hope our paths will cross again in the future. 12.01.2022 Arriving at the Barn one Wednesday night before Halloween a few years ago, I initially thought the local neighbourhood kids' Trick or Treating had started a night early. Turns out the kid in the yellow jumpsuit was Ryusei Imai (then aged five), the "Mini Bruce Lee" from Japan, who was in the US at the time, doing the rounds of the LA talk shows. His parents had brought him up to Seattle specifically to meet Sigung Taky, before heading back to Japan. He performed his nunchuku ...routine for us, posed for a few photos then had to leave; past his bedtime at the time, I'm guessing! We then conducted our class as normal, with Sifu Abe instructing. Over the years we would have many visitors from around the US and the world, who would come to meet Sigung and/or to train with us under his watchful eye. 10.01.2022 With Sifu Abe, Sigung and my friend Guro Brent, an Instructor under Guro Dan, from Vancouver BC Canada and some of his students at the time. Always impressed with their dedication to the art and their physical stamina! They would drive over two hours (not including any Border Crossing delays) from Vancouver to train hard with us for two hours, then go right back home that same night. I was often exhausted after every class, so I would be amazed they could make the trip back north after a hard workout with us at the Barn! Later I would collaborate with Brent to organize Sigung Taky's first Canadian instructional seminar in Vancouver in 2016. 09.01.2022 From one of our demonstrations in Seattle's Chinatown. This was the demo where Sifu Abe had us perform hundreds of kicks at the beginning. At the time I wondered through the pain why Sifu Abe was making us do so many kicks! Afterwards, even our youngest and fittest demo team member, A-Rod said he felt like throwing up due to the exertion at the time! He didn't, fortunately! None of us in the demo team knew why Sifu Abe had made us to do so many kicks (or asked him about it) u...ntil a few years later when we amusingly recounted those memories to Sifu Abe one night at class; he chuckled, then told us that while he had wanted to move on with the demo program, Sigung was standing next to him, urging him to keep us going with the kicks, and that was why we ended up doing so many! 03.01.2022 On the night of Sigung's 90th birthday, several years ago. There was class as usual at the Barn that evening, and he was in attendance as always. I wasn't able to train that night due to some other personal commitment, however I went over later that evening towards the end of class with my son to wish Sigung a happy birthday. #takykimura

03.01.2022 As we remember Sijo Bruce's passing 47 years ago today, I found this nice shot of Sifu Abe and Sigung with my son at the grave site a few years ago. My boy was shy and reluctant to come forward in front of the crowd to pay respects to Sijo and Brandon, but after some coaxing from Sigung, he followed me out to the front and was rewarded with a big hug from Sigung. This photo would have been taken on the 19th of July as we always used to go out on the day before the date being ...observed, to pay our respects, tidy up the grave site and leave some flowers there before the general public and tourists arrived the next day. Over time some of the locals caught on to our tradition, and they would then also visit the grave site the day before each anniversary to greet Sigung and our group. Sifu Bob Gambitta (back row, 5th from left), a former Golden Gloves boxing champion from back in the day, and now a Senior Instructor under Guro Dan, was visiting from NY. I first met Bob in 2014 while helping instruct at Sigung's first US seminar at Rhode Island, and it was my pleasure and honour at that time to share some of the techniques from our Seattle curriculum with him.
