08.01.2022 ** Today is Gastroschisis Day** Gastroschisis is a birth defect that causes the intestines to protrude from a hole in the abdomen. There is still a 10% mortality rate due to complications or related defects and infections. The condition affects 1 out of every 2229 babies according to the CDC. Gastroschisis Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of the issue and find solutions. Here is a little bit more on what Gastroschisis is.... Gastroschisis is a birth defect of the abdominal (belly) wall. The babys intestines are found outside of the babys body, exiting through a hole beside the belly button. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can also be found outside of the babys body. Gastroschisis occurs early during pregnancy when the muscles that make up the babys abdominal wall do not form correctly. A hole occurs which allows the intestines and other organs to extend outside of the body, usually to the right side of belly button. Because the intestines are not covered in a protective sac and are exposed to the amniotic fluid, the intestines can become irritated, causing them to shorten, twist, or swell.
