11.01.2022 Is my skin DRY OR DEHYDRATED? We are asked this question all the time in the salon. What makes this confusing is that Dry skin falls under one of the 5 Genetic Skin Types (Dry, Combination, Sensitive, Normal or Oily). Whereas Dehydration is classified as a skin condition, not a skin type. You can be any of the above skin types and suffer from Dehydration, as long as your skin is lacking water and feeling tight. When your skin is dehydrated, it will still produce oil. In fact,... its probably over-producing oil to compensate for the lack of moisture (Hydration) in the skin. Dehydrated skin is common among those with oily & acne-prone skin. In Australians we also have the added challenge of there being a hole in our ozone layer, affecting our climate. As the cooler months approach, we are more likely to have hotter showers and crank up the heaters. All of which can really dehydrate our skin & compromise our skins protective barrier. Resulting in us experiencing tightness, flakiness, accentuating fine lines, etc. It allows free radicals and bacteria to enter the skin more easily & can cause acne & premature ageing.
