24.01.2022 Lower parent-child conflict significantly reduces risk of mental health difficulties in children exposed to adversity. - Eric Dolan via psypost.org Facing adversity in childhood is associated with psychopathology in adolescence, but this risk is lower in families with less parent-child conflict, according to new research. The study, published in The British Journal of Psychiatry, highlights the importance of the parent-child relationship. Adversity is common in childhood, af...fecting roughly 1-in-4 children. There is now a lot of evidence indicating that adversity is major risk factor for mental health difficulties in later life and it has been associated with 25-40% of cases of depression and anxiety, said study author Colm Healy, a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychiatry at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. #tbi #neuroscience #neuropsychology #healthandwellbeing #melbournesports #melbourneclinic #mentalhealthawareness #melbourneiloveyou #melbournemums #iqtest #ilovemelbourne #clinicalpsychology #melbournefitness #menshealthau #womenshealthaus #jurmainehealthbrain #concussion #afl #braininjury #schoolsports #clinicalpsychology #schoolsportsvictoria #womensfootball #memory #concentration #melbournelawyer #adhd #dementia

23.01.2022 Happy Friday! Interesting brain fact today wed love to share with you! Repost @neuroscienceneurology ... New research ( swipe left ) shows that the glymphatic system, the brains waste removal system is synchronized with circadian rhythm, the internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. This suggests that individuals who sleep during the day, working night-shift are at greater risk for developing neurological disorders like Alzheimers disorder. . The glymphatic system was first discovered in 2012 by Nedergaard and team, consisting of networks of plumbing that follow the path of blood vessels and pumps cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through brain tissue. The system is a network of perivascular tunnels wrapped by astrocyte endfeet and washes away waste during sleep. . Researchers in this study demonstrated that when mice were anesthetized all day, their glymphatic system still only functioned during the animals typical rest period, showing that glymphatic system function is not solely based on sleep or wakefulness but by the daily rhythms dictated by our biological clock. . Feel free to share or tag a friend. Thoughts? Did you know about the glymphatic system See more

23.01.2022 Good routine to start the new week! Have a great week folks! Repost @beyondblueofficial While our work, home and social lives continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, its important that we try to establish structure to our days to provide some stability that helps to strengthen and support our mental health.... Head to the link in our bio for more information and advice on establishing a routine.

22.01.2022 A new study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that roughly 45 minutes of vigorous exercise during the pandemic sufficiently reduced negative emotions. Strict social distancing measures implemented during the pandemic have impacted the daily lives of citizens around the world. Despite the mental health impact of such prolonged social isolation, little research has considered possible mitigating factors that might reduce mental suffering. - Psypost

22.01.2022 Daily use of alcohol or other drugs over a period of time can negatively affect thinking skills such as attention, memory, speed of thinking and problem-solving. Using alcohol and other drugs can also decrease our body's ability to fight infections. This may be important if you are exposed to the COVID19 virus. Alcohol reduces immunity, and anything we inhale impacts our lung capacity and function. - APS

17.01.2022 Did you know? More Entitled People Get Angrier After Experiencing Bad Luck - Matthew Warren Psychological entitlement is essentially a belief that you deserve more than others. People who score highly in entitlement tend to think that others should be accommodating of their own needs and schedules, for instance, and are more likely to see themselves as being mistreated. When their high expectations arent met, they can experience reduced wellbeing and feelings of anger. Peopl...e high in entitlement showed greater anger than those low in entitlement when recalling an instance of bad luck. But when remembering an instance of unfair treatment, those high and low in entitlement showed similar levels of anger. That is, entitlement again seemed to be an important factor in determining anger after bad luck, but not when there was a specific individual to blame. See more

15.01.2022 Thursday ponders. Tag an iso-friend! Repost @neuroscienceneurology ... Tag a friend .. thoughts, comments ? . Objective To examine the association of body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with brain volume. Methods: They used cross-sectional data from the UK Biobank study (n = 9,652, age 55.4 7.5 years, 47.9% men). Measures included BMI, WHR, and total fat mass as ascertained from bioimpedance. Brain images were produced with structural MRI. Results After adjustment for a range of covariates, higher levels of all obesity measures were related to lower gray matter volume: BMI per 1 SD ( coefficient 4,113, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4,862 to 3,364), WHR ( coefficient 4,272, 95% CI 5,280 to 3,264), and fat mass ( coefficient 4,590, 95% CI 5,386 to 3,793). The combination of overall obesity (BMI 30 kg/m2) and central obesity (WHR >0.85 for women, >0.90 for men) was associated with the lowest gray matter compared with that in lean adults. In hypothesis-free testing with a Bonferroni correction, obesity was also related to various regional brain volumes, including caudate, putamen, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens. No associations between obesity and white matter were apparent. Conclusion The combination of heightened BMI and WHR may be an important risk factor for gray matter atrophy

02.01.2022 Let us know what your weekend exercise plan is! Repost @neuroscienceneurology Studies carried out on both animals and humans suggest that exercise promotes and modulates neuroplasticity which may translate into cognitive changes. ... . The unerlying mechanisms of how physical exercise promotes neurogenesis is still unclear. Neurotrophins such as, BDNF, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) play a big role. A decline in neurogenesis has been associated with decrease levels of these trophic factors. Both peripheral levels of IGF-1 and VEGF increase following exercise and enter into the brain via the blood brain barrier. What are your thoughts and do you exercise daily ? .
