24.01.2022 I love Ilya Kaminsky’s poetry and exquisite Soviet memories, recalled through the prism of deafness. This story of his father’s survival, with extraordinary last sentence...
18.01.2022 What an impressive and spirited woman - and her cooking literally sustains her family
18.01.2022 The cut throat world of - competitive porridge making. Super cute. Thanks Peter Miller
17.01.2022 Rest in peace Joan Hocquard, the oldest woman in the UK who died aged 112. My favourite detail in this story? Hocquard had ‘refused a card from the Queen on her 100th birthday because she did not want people to know how old she was.’
17.01.2022 Fall tart. Pumpkin, sweet potato and red onion on top of caramelised onions, sharp cheese and mustard and a great buttery wholewheat pastry. Very grown up tastes! Might add in some different veges next time. Variety is the spice ... thanks @bonappetitmag #autumn #fall #pumpkin #sweetpotato #seasonalfood #delicious #yum #deliciousandnutritious #baking #bakesavoury #vegetarian #healthyfood
13.01.2022 I made my favourite buttery apple cake for a friend whose just had a baby and she asked for the recipe. Everyone does, so am sharing it here - above, next. I didn’t plan this, as you will see because half the cake was gone by the time I went to take a photo. Recipe coming next! (The burnt bits are apricot jam. Still getting to know my new oven )
11.01.2022 I met Nehama walking on the path in my village. She has baked the Yemenite specialty Sabaya, layered buttery (savoury) filo pastry for her family for the Jewish holiday of Simhat Torah. She’s invited me for coffee. Perhaps I can persuade her to let me watch her make it? Always impressed with traditional home bakers! 09.01.2022 Ellen Fanning at the Drum has put together a beautiful tribute to Agi Adler, the Just Add Love grandmother who passed away earlier this year. Watch here at 47 minutes in and if you would like to know more about Agi or her recipes, I have posted a tribute on the website ( you can see it here https://www.justaddlove.net.au/blog-1/potato09122016-9mlfm ) Or you can buy the book, of course. Not many copies left now, the Just Add Love website is the best place to find the last ones!
07.01.2022 Sometimes a comment from a reader can stop you in your tracks and make you cry. "Thank you Irris Makler for a wonderful book, the only cookbook I have read from cover to cover, often with tears in my eyes. I look forward to cooking many of the recipes." That's what Bob Adler wrote on the Just Add Love tribute to Agi Adler (no relation) who passed away this year. Thanks Bob I hope you do try the recipes! You can read about Agi's inspiring life here: https://www.justaddlove.net.au/blog-1/potato09122016-9mlfm
05.01.2022 Ukraine coming to terms with Nazi crimes, covered up during Soviet times. Stalin instructed that the site of the Babyn Yar (Babi Yar) massacre be filled in and apartments built there, erasing history a second time. The scientific methods used to identify the site are also fascinating.
05.01.2022 For Danielle Shafrir, and anyone else who wants a never fail simply delicious, in fact irresistible and very European, chewy not soft apple cake. I have some end of season plums and think I will try it with plums too. And I will take better photos (and won't let the apricot jam burn!) Buttery German Apple Cake (sunken apple cake, adapted from an old family recipe, published by Bon Appetit.) INGREDIENTS...Continue reading
05.01.2022 Can't resisit posting this. Longreads chose an article I wrote about this project as one of their favourite reads of the week. It's my piece about Just Add Love in the Griffith Review and I am very chuffed. (And if they think that's long, they should read the book!) How great is that Natasha Cica? https://twitter.com/Longreads/status/1319697102650396672
02.01.2022 This is one of those stories that's too good to check. Did this really happen to Katherine Hepburn? Did she really tell it? The sentiment behind it is so beautiful, and reminds me so much of the lessons learnt from the generous grandmothers in the 'Just Add Love' project, that I have to share it. Generosity and kindness are everything.
02.01.2022 Amazing! The treasure trove of paintings - and the story. The (German speaking) artist’s faith that the Nazis wouldn’t target someone as insignificant as her was misplaced of course - and so sad.
01.01.2022 Fascinating. Helen Epstein has always been a trailblazer.Though I have been thinking about this since I read it, and not sure why that academic would name the 2 women who had the affair - the Jewish prisoner and the SS woman... first of all, what's the benefit? and second of all, she could be wrong. It was guesswork, after all...
