25.01.2022 Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born. - Anais Nin Happy World Friendship Day. We look forward to a world and a time where there is enough trust amongst humanity that we can consider strangers as friends. Where we can wish to be friends with those we disagree with, where we see potential for comradeship with people of all ages, walks of life and places of birth. Every friend... is a chance to awaken a new world in us, and that is something worth appreciating. An infinite number of beautiful, wonderful possibilities for all of us. Happy World Friendship Day. - Just Be Nice.

24.01.2022 Of all the things you could possibly be, Just Be Nice. In every moment, in every interaction, we have a chance to be a little bit nicer, to take more responsibility for being a positive moment in someones day, to take the high-road. Mastering the art of being nice is a never ending process; on good days, when things are going well, it seems easy. On the hard days, when we are frustrated, feeling attacked, burnt out, sad or anxious, it can be hard.... Deciding what being nice means to you, and maintaining those principles through good and bad days is essential to character development. Being nice doesnt mean always backing down, acquiescing or letting people walk all over you. It doesnt mean that you dont call out bad behaviour, tell people when they are wrong or meekly submit to bullying. Being nice means doing all things with a generous spirit, seeking understanding, taking responsibility and avoiding petty squabbles. The high road sometimes means picking fights, but fighting for what is right and for those who cannot fight for themselves. Change making creates tension and generates frustration, but doesnt require pettiness, meanness and underhandedness. Honesty, justice and equality all require advocates prepared to face staunch opposition, and to Just Be Nice.

24.01.2022 The new normal looking very much like the very very old normal. Every day we see companies making pithy ads, having morning teas, putting posters up and adding articles to their marketing collateral about how much they care about people, sustainability, culture and mental health; and every day we see behaviours like this. This is not progress. This is not looking after everyone. This cant be undone by a fundraising dinner or a transactional show of support for people who... are in need. This is an irreparable destruction of cultural artefacts that we should be protecting at all costs, we should be proud of the fact that we walk the country of the oldest living culture in the world. Every day we work to improve the performance and behaviours of companies like this, but we need to continue to demand better of organisations across the globe. We can be better and we must. #justbeniceproject #jbnproject #impact #socialimpact #business #bebetter #sorryday #ethicalleadership https://www.theguardian.com//rio-tinto-blasts-46000-year-o

23.01.2022 Just Be Nice in 100 Words. We believe in Looking after people, ensuring that they have all the help they need, when they need it, for as long as they need it. We take the time to manage goodwill, because we know there are so many people who want to help and dont know where to start.... We help people, to help people. Its important that we not only aspire to help people in need, but to educate individuals and organisations and improve impact literacy across the board. We are fortunate to have the support of such wonderful communities, individuals and businesses, and we are so grateful for the amazing support that @life.of.shira the team at @gentsac have given us in July. Head over to support them and in turn, support us. Learn more about JBN on their IGTV channel and give them a high five for stepping up to help, and get better at helping, those in need. Stay safe, look after each other and especially through these challenging times, Just Be Nice.

23.01.2022 Organisational dissonance occurs when an organisations stated beliefs, purpose, culture and actions do not all align. There are plenty of examples of organisational dissonance in business, non-profits, education and social enterprise. Certainly we see it in Governments and public service across the globe, it can be both intentional and unintentional. At The Just Be Nice Project one of the first things we look for when engaging with partner organisations is signs of organisat...ional dissonance. Staff dissatisfaction, cultural difficulties, uncertain future goals, disconnects across the board and a lack of trust all need to be addressed in the process of helping organisations do a better job of social impact. It is possible to align what you say you want to do, and what you do and how you do it. No one wants to work for an organisation that makes an effort to make performative transactional attempts at social impact while neglecting their own internal dissonance. It might not be easy, but it is possible. It might not be obvious to everyone outside of your organisation, but it is necessary work for the longevity and growth of your organisation. Knowing who you are, what youre about and ensuring a cultural resonance from top to bottom makes organisations strong, particularly in challenging times. That is what makes character-led organisations so valuable.

22.01.2022 It is impossible to advocate for equality of opportunity without first recognising opportunities youve had, and challenges youve been spared; secondly, cultivating the habit of caring about things that dont affect you directly, and thirdly - long-term learning about those issues, communities and experiences. It is entirely possible to care about something without knowing very much about it. To drive change, and help bring people along, however, it is imperative that we se...parate care from knowledge, and recognise the importance of knowledge in delivering solutions and improvements to the issues that we care about. Headlines, sound bites, tweets, news tickers, memes, social media posts - are all capable of provoking an emotional response, and giving people the illusion of caring about an issue - let care be the reason you dig deeper, learn more and pay attention for the long term. Resist the urge to only pay attention to the way things affect you, use care as a reason to go deeper, and as always - Just Be Nice.

22.01.2022 Two years ago, a tragic accident left a large hole in the lives of those closest to her as young Charlie passed away. Two years on, her sister Chiara remembers and honors the memory and impact of Charlies life through programs for young people who need a hand, some guidance, care and love. We are so proud of Chiara and @charliespals_ and glad to be a part of keeping Charlies memory and legacy alive through connection, community and care.... Thank you Charlie for bringing people together and thank you Chiara for the amazing energy you bring to your work and Charlies memory.

22.01.2022 Happy World Kindness Day - Not the only day of the year to 'be kind', but certainly a great day to celebrate kindness. Perhaps take a moment to reaffirm that every day could be world kindness day if we put others first, lift each other up and show a bit more appreciation as often as possible. Keep looking out for one another, keep aspiring for the best for everyone and always, Just Be Nice.

20.01.2022 Today is a day to remind ourselves and each other that the cornerstone of good community and connection is to consistently pay attention to those around us. Keep paying attention, keep looking out for each other, keep checking in and, over time, build communities of depth and trust that are strong enough and well resourced enough to weather whatever challenges come their way.

19.01.2022 Everything that has ever happened, for any human being, anywhere on the planet... was only possible because of a mother. Wishing a happy mothers day to all mothers, and to those who take on the role of mothers everywhere across the globe, we literally would not be here without you. Sending love and respect to everyone on this special day.... #MothersDay #JustBeNiceProject

15.01.2022 It is hard to imagine that this is a controversial sentiment, but housing - safe, adequate, relevant, affordable, secure, long-term housing with appropriate amenity and supporting infrastructure around it - is a human right first - investment second. Too often we see protection of 'investment' trumping the fundamental right to housing. This shows up in fiscal policy, town planning, investment advice, tax breaks, rental regulation and the general Australian attitude to housing... and the housing market. Nowhere in the UN Declaration of rights, does it say that it is an inalienable right to own and leverage empty properties, claim tax breaks against those properties, and expect a lifetime of exponential returns on those properties - regardless of whether wages, job security or the economy outside of the property market, rise at the same level. If global challenges can teach us anything, it is to open our eyes and our mouths, to advocate for housing as a human right first. As alternatives to real estate - encourage investment in wage growth, sustainable energy production, education and agricultural innovations. At the Just Be Nice Project we believe in a world where everyone is guaranteed housing - not a world where everyone is guaranteed exponential returns on investment properties. Humans matter. Human rights matter. Humanity matters. Let's invest in rising-tide policies that allow everyone a chance at opportunity, let's be better. #JustBeNIce

15.01.2022 We're so pleased to see this announcement, increasing social housing stock over the next 4 years for Victorians. Another step towards housing, employment and good mental health outcomes for everyone.

14.01.2022 Happy International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples. We are continually inspired by the resilience, courage, tenacity, intelligence, kindness and creativity of first nations peoples across the world, as they work to retain their ancient cultural identities and recognition of their significance and contribution among the young modern sovereign nations. In particular we pay tribute to the worlds oldest living culture, the Indigenous Australians with some 75,000 years of c...ontinuous custodianship of our land. We are proud to be able to share the land with its traditional owners and custodians and we acknowledge their leaders, past, present and emerging. With greater respect, agency and understanding, we are hopeful that more opportunities to learn from these ancient cultures will arise; knowing that the modern world will be better for it. We are hopeful that the preservation of knowledge, culture, agency and traditional lands will become ever more important to countries across the world. #WeAreIndigenous #IndigenousDay #IndigenousPeoplesDay

13.01.2022 Particularly as we see Victoria enter Stage 4 lock-down, it is important to understand that it is normal and expected that people will sometimes not be ok. We can expect to ride the coronacoaster of emotions from frustration, to resignation, to optimism, to annoyance, to positivity that we have the opportunity to stamp out the community transmission through a hard 6 weeks of stage four lockdown. Check in with each other through this time, do what you can to support one anot...her, but also understand that our attitudes, care and positive outlook matters not just during this 6 week period, but through the entire recovery period, which may take a couple of years to complete. Remember to care today, to care tomorrow and to care for years to come, as we deal with the social, health and economic impact of a global pandemic. Advocating for improved supports for all people who need assistance, regardless of how they come to find themselves needing a hand. Its OK to not be OK. Its fine to be mostly OK, but sometimes not. Its OK to have good days and bad days, good moments and flat ones. Well be working to ensure that the eco-system is in place to support people and communities well into the future, and that businesses and organisations have all the tools and support they need to help people in the best possible way. If youre interested in getting on board, please dont hesitate to reach out as we prepare organisations for a re-emerging economy and social environment in late 2020.

13.01.2022 In this episode, I chat with Josh Reid Jones founder of the The Just Be Nice Project.

13.01.2022 When times get complicated and intense, it can be good to step back and focus on the simple things within our control, to help get things back on track. Staying at home as much as possible, wearing a mask when youre out, looking after your mates and Just Being Nice. Everyone is going to have good and bad days during stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne, and that is ok. Its ok to re-jig your plans for the next 6-weeks and make lockdown appropriate adjustments to your expectations i...n order to look after your mental, physical and economic well-being. We are sending out lots of love and support. Know that we will also continue to advocate for, and work towards, improved support for everybody in need during and after the effects of COVID and the restrictions. Look after those close to you, lets all move through this together, with good grace and always try to Just Be Nice, your example might just help someone out of a bad day.

13.01.2022 Black Lives Matter. Black Voices Matter. Black Representation Matters. We stand with those against inequality and injustice. Every day. Always.

12.01.2022 Over many years we have heard this question multiple times - often from people concerned that they are being 'too nice' to others. Can you ever be 'too nice'? To be honest, we don't think you can be. In-fact, we think you can always be nicer. There is always a way to carry yourself through the day with a little more generosity, a little more understanding, a little more compassion, a little more respect and a little bit more patience.... You can only ever consider yourself being 'too nice', if you are expecting something in return for your 'niceness'. We encourage you to sleep soundly at night because of the way you carry yourself through the day, and the way you treat others. Not to stay awake calculating insufficient returns on your 'niceness'. You are in wholly in control of how nice you are each day, and, as a starting point for making a positive impact in the world, we think it's great to audit your own behaviour to look for ways that you can carry yourself being as nice as possible, all the time. Everyone can make small efforts to be nicer - from non-verbal 10 month old children, to 85 year olds. We are called the Just Be Nice Project for that very reason - to bring people together around the idea that each day you can be a little bit nicer, on the way to doing good. If you want to have a bigger impact - be nice every day, take the time to be really good at whatever you are doing, and then allow us to harness that talent, and that niceness - to actually do good. Being nice is about how you carry yourself. Doing good is ensuring that the people you are trying to help, get better. Good help requires excellence, co-ordination, responsibility, understanding and long-term commitments to outcomes for others - while being nice simply requires that you consider the way you carry yourself, through every interaction, every moment, every day. We all make mistakes, we all slip up, we all have our moments when we aren't nice - navigating those moments and making improvements is part of being human, and that's ok too. If we can encourage you to consider one thing each morning however - it's not "Am I being too nice?" it's Just Be Nice.

12.01.2022 For us all to be in this together we need to do the right thing, recognise doing the right thing, encourage doing the right thing and reward doing the right thing. Reconciliation requires recognition, respect, truth telling and most importantly, action. We join Indigenous voices in the call;... "for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution. Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self-determination. We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history. In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future." - Uluru Statement 2017 #InThisTogether2020 #NRW2020 #Reconciliation # #firstnations #socialimpact

11.01.2022 This is going to be a wonderful event with the team at Tank Stream Labs!

11.01.2022 A couple of thousand years of evolution as social animals has us hard wired for face to face interaction. In person. During isolation, even though we are able to communicate, there is a disconnect when communication comes primarily through screens, cameras, text messages, phones and emails. Attention wanders, eyes get tired, were trapped in our seats.... We are literally encouraged to mute ourselves as we sit there staring at screens filled with sometimes dozens of faces. Not a crowd, but a crowded screen. For all the flexibility it allows, for all the technological capacity that we have to remain productive at a distance, there can be no mistake; Human beings are not built for this. #DigitalFatigue is real, it is not a slight on your capacity to produce work. You are not alone. Wanting to get off screens, phones and computers does not mean that you dont care about your work or the people around you. It means that you are human. Take the time away. Refresh your mind, your eyes and your heart. A few hours without your phone, off the computer will not do you any harm. Step away so that you can bring a better self to the digital world tomorrow and the day after. Workplaces; dont fill days with video conferencing. Allow time for humans to do human things. Move, play, focus on things other than screens. Eat away from your computer, enjoy your lunch. Walk outside, stretch your legs, stretch your arms, move your neck from side to side, stand up straight and breathe deeply. Colour-in. Read a book. Take a glass of wine and sit by the window in your favourite blanket to enjoy some silence and down time. The answer to digital fatigue is not more digital communication, it is not making yourself more available at all hours to all forms of digital connection. Time to do deep work, time to focus, time to yourself is all critical if you are to deliver your best work, but more importantly, it is critical to maintaining optimal mental and physical health. As important as drinking water and eating your veggies, take time away from the screens, take time for yourself and give yourself some digital rest. Youre worth it. #digitalfatigue #mentalhealth #COVID

10.01.2022 Currently were more online than usual. The temptation to rush things into the virtual world is immense, and for some organisations and industries there are opportunities to utilise technology in new ways. It is important to remember, we will emerge from this pandemic. Physically as well as economically. People and communities will be looking to reconnect, to engage, communicate, and care for one another in the ways that make us uniquely human.... Automation is not connection. Sales funnels are not connection. Online stores are not connection. Email automation is not connection. They may be effective, they might move widgets and they may inform, but autopilot is not connection. One-way communications and bots are not connection. Connection and great communication are nuanced, individual, generous and human. As we emerge from behind our screens, lets remember that the real world and real connection requires understanding, focus, generosity, time and humanity. Being human is as important as its ever been. Dont reduce humanity to profit and processes. We can be more and we must, we cant come together if we cant be human. Use technology to amplify our humanity, not replace it. If youre looking for ways to set your organisation up for more effective connection, understanding and impact, get in touch.

09.01.2022 What can we do right now? How can I have impact where I am? What can I do to help? Before you worry about changing the whole world, having a huge impact, finding a cause you are passionate about; ... Find someone, anyone you know, anyone close to you; Ask if you can help. Listen to the answer. Do that. Recognising a need and being able to fill that need is a skill. If you cant see anyone around you that needs help, you need more practice looking. There is always someone needing a hand, in some way. Whatever aspirations you have for support in your own life, or the lives of those you care about, make those your aspirations for the people around you and act accordingly. Be that support wherever you can. Everyone deserves the help they need, when they need it, for as long as they need it, regardless of how they come to need help. Our aspiration is to ensure that they get it.

09.01.2022 We can do it Quaranteam!

09.01.2022 Today is International Men's Day. Like every day, we want to have honest, open, long-term and aspirational conversations with communities. Community at the Just Be Nice Project is not simply a group related by geography - it is a group united by any common thread. Broadly speaking it could be sex, it could be sexuality, religion or age. In more focused instances it can be the handful of Italian chess players that play at a local club.... Community matters, because when we want to look after people, we have to meet them where they are. When we want to engage people, change their minds, open their eyes to experiences, opportunities and challenges - we need to know where they are starting from - what they may know or believe already. It is true, that on many metrics, it appears that men have it better than women - but it is also true that on many others - they don't. We need to meet people where they are. Perhaps we don't need to spend lots of time with male executives, teaching them how to have higher salaries - but we certainly need to spend time with men improving their access to help they need when they despair for their futures. We need to advocate for and celebrate the wonderful men around the world - who conduct themselves with character, kindness, compassion and effort. This International Men's Day, we continue our commitment to meet people where they are, promote people of character - and work to ensure that the challenges faced by men are met with the appropriate, long-term, comprehensive support that they, and everyone else, deserve. #JustBeNIce

09.01.2022 Its a simple, yet beautiful philosophy. Each one, teach one. Not Each one, post about it. Not Each one, tell one to teach themselves. Not even; Each one, try to teach 50,000 people. Each one, teach one. If you can read, teach someone to read.... If you know how to shoot a basketball, teach someone how to shoot a basketball. If you know how to play an instrument, teach someone how to play. Each one, teach one. Fundamentally, when looking to have impact, people look too far beyond the people within their own reach. If you start here, teach one, then teach that one to carry on teaching too, then over a long period of time we get positive change. When you take on the responsibility of teaching, you learn that impact takes resources, patience, consistency and most of all, time. When you take on the responsibility of teaching, you have to meet your student where they are, not where you are. You need to take time to understand where theyre at, what engages them, what they need, what brings them along. As a teacher who sees the possibilities ahead for them if they learn, its on you to find ways to keep them moving forward, often to ends that they cannot possibly see from where they currently are. All great change takes time, effort, expertise, support and opportunity. Dont worry about great change right at the beginning. Find what youre good at. Teach one. Repeat. It will change your life, it will change the life of others.

09.01.2022 The worst punishment you can give a human being, is not to put them into a room with some of the most dangerous, violent, manipulative and sociopathic people (as one may find in the worst prisons;. It is to place an individual in solitary confinement. Humans, need humans. We are social animals, we define ourselves against others, we have deep intrinsic motivations to contribute and cooperate, and isolation, loneliness and excessive solitude are actually detrimental to the men...tal, physical and social health of humans. If you are reading this, and you are a human, make an effort this week to spend some time with other humans - Offline, in the real world. Be generous, listen, collaborate, care, converse and look out for other humans. Online tools are tools - remember also that 'Screen' is also a verb that means 'to conceal'. The greater percentage of your life is spent with good humans, community and the environment outside - the happier you'll be and the better off we will all be. If you aren't currently prohibited from doing so due to COVID - Book in some time to pop the screens down and show up - in real life. #HumansNeedHumans #JBNProject #JustBeNiceProject #MentalHealth #Community

08.01.2022 It's a brand new year, and we are excited to announce that our 2020-2040 plan is now a 2021-2040 plan. The outcomes don't need to change when you have a good plan, you simply need to adjust to the current reality to make it happen. While many people in 2020 talked about the 'unprecedented challenges' that were faced, we have to acknowledge that in fact, many of these challenges have decades of precedent - and it was mostly the scale of challenges that was novel. There have al...ways been people who face insecure employment, who can't earn a living wage, people who are isolated and lacking community support. There are always people in precarious housing circumstances, with inadequate, insecure and unaffordable housing options available. There are thousands of Australians, and billions of citizens of the world who are victims of circumstance. Unable, in spite of their best efforts, to overcome situations beyond their control. 2020 brought these challenges to many who previously had not experienced them - and we hope that it brings people together, rallying around our long-term mission to ensure that everyone, everywhere has an equality of opportunity that ensures they have access to adequate, affordable, secure housing, a living wage and gainful, meaningful employment and good mental health. We hope that people can learn and understand that, despite your best efforts, sometimes hard times can come your way - due to circumstances beyond your control. It doesn't mean you don't deserve help - in fact, it means you really should have access to the help you need, when you need it, for as long as you need it. We need to continue to improve education outcomes, community support and understanding and the social and economic support required to deliver all of these outcomes, to everyone. We won't be able to do it on our own. This year, as with every year, we will need your support. Join us as we build a world where people, help people - better. #JustBeNice #JBNProject

08.01.2022 If your response to #BlackLivesMatter is #AllLivesMatter listen up. As soon as we post anything about Black Lives Matter, that we get some All Lives Matter responses. This is worth sharing for those who dont understand and need a little bit of help, together we can all be better.... #GeorgeFloyd #JBNProject #ICantBreathe #BeBetter https://youtu.be/Drp82EHHbSA

08.01.2022 When setting up systems of support, we need to look beyond simply starting to help people, and all the way through to the end point, developing systems of complete, comprehensive help. Common objections to this point of view include; "But we need to start somewhere." "Isnt something better than nothing?"... "Shouldnt they be grateful for the help that we gave them?" The truth is - A half-finished open heart surgery on someone who has a faulty valve is worse than leaving it, and waiting until the job can be done fully. Having a vulnerable person reach out for help, only to have their problems listened to, and then not addressed fully, can cause more damage than not doing anything in the first place. The loss of trust, the heartbreak of feeling like you cant access the help you need, the feelings of abandonment, despair and being worse off than you were before - are all very real side effects of incomplete help. If everyone focused on the needs of those we are helping, and sought to resolve them completely, then our accepted systems of impact would look very different. The Just Be Nice Project believes that complete help is the only outcome worth working towards, anything less is incomplete, and in need of work. Join us in our mission to change the way people, help people.

06.01.2022 Today is National Sorry Day, a recognition of the injustice suffered by the Indigenous peoples of our country. A tribute to their strength, courage and resilience in the face of this injustice, and a call for reconciliation, truth telling, commemoration, mourning and ultimately healing. We have a long way to go to resolve our treatment and acknowledgement of our first nations people and culture. Sorry Day is one way of keeping this very necessary conversation in the public sp...ace. while acknowledging the pain and disparity in opportunity endured by generations of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders, and the tragic loss of great swathes of cultural lore that passed unbroken for millennia before being violently disrupted. Self determination starts with acknowledgement of self, and the Just Be Nice Project is proud to acknowledge the oldest living culture on the planet, and continue to work to improve the equality of opportunity for members of those Nations across the country. #sorryday #closethegap #reconciliation #truth

04.01.2022 Today, June 3rd is Mabo Day, a day in which we celebrate the landmark achievements of Eddie Koiki Mabo in overturning the notion of Terra Nullius, a colonial legal fiction that stated the the land of Australia was land belonging to no-one so that they could colonise without treaty. After Sorry Day, and Reconciliation Week, and the destruction of a 46,000 year old cultural artefact by Rio Tinto; we recognise that there is still a long way to go to afford the Aboriginal and T...orres Strait Islanders of our country the respect, voice, agency and recognition they deserve. We will continue to work to promote and encourage truth telling, reconciliation and recognition of not only their struggles but their triumphs. We should be proud custodians of the oldest living culture on the planet, and should treat it as a privilege that we are able to live among it. We can do better, and we will. Vale Eddie Koiki Mabo, and thank you.

03.01.2022 What are the aspirations that you have for your children? Your parents? Your loved ones? Health? Happiness? Opportunity? Support breeds success. Improved support does not lead to more laziness or more dependence or softness. Support gives people a chance to thrive. Support lifts people up. Support enables people to fulfil their potential. Too often we see policies and proposals designed to reduce the amount of support the most vulnerable individuals and communities rece...ive. We believe in improving equality of opportunity. Ensuring that people are supported from where they are, to where theyd like to be. Giving every person the chance to understand what they are capable of, and the support to make the most of their capabilities. We believe in having the same aspirations for others as we have for our loved ones. Creating possibilities to live into, not expectations to live up to, and doing it for everyone. Make no mistake, Support breeds success. More support for those who currently miss out = more opportunities = more success. If you want to do a better job of supporting your people and the communities around you, get in touch, wed love to have you on board. #business #support #culture #justbenice #community #socialimpact #socent

02.01.2022 Today is day one of mandatory mask wearing in Melbourne and our friends at Optimus Health Group have put together some advice about safely wearing a fabric mask. If you do not yet have a mask, there are a range of wonderful videos on Youtube teaching people how to make masks from things you may have at home. Stay safe, stay home and lets look after one another to reduce the number of positive cases and the spread of COVID cases in the coming weeks.

02.01.2022 Diversity is not simply a series of targets to be met. Diversity is not about breaking humanity into a couple of binary metrics and then filling spaces with those people, there is a need for diversity; in diversity. Diversity is about developing diverse communities. Community isnt just a specific geographic area; it can mean any collection of characteristics, circumstances and backgrounds that unite people across commonalities.... Its a focus on developing people who are traditionally not developed into certain roles, responsibilities and skill sets. Diversity is developmental. Its about acknowledging the gaps between what a person has, and what they need to be able to understand to make the most of opportunities presented to them. If you want diversity in your organisation you must invest in the long-term development of diverse communities. We believe that #diversity is a developmental process. There should be a clear line from the CEO out into communities of all kinds. Individuals and communities should be developed so that they come to the table ready to go, with the correct skills and capacity to contribute. Diversity isnt just about who you get at the end of the process, its about who you include at the beginning. #justbenice #jbnproject #business #community #development #socialimpact #opportunity

01.01.2022 Most of us have seen the posters, been in the morning teas and have read the emails from management teams giving everyone tips on how to look out for one another. Weve read company reports outlining the commitments to social change, environmental sustainability and the desire to engage with worthy causes both here and abroad. There has never been a shortage of lip service and performative opportunities to talk about what matters to an organisation and their aspirations for... their people and the world around them, but after the posters in the tea room and the morning teas, then what? Social Impact, Mental Health, Inclusivity, Diversity and Company Culture cannot be separated and treated as siloed items to be ticked off boxes through a panel discussion once a year or a morning tea, or posters in the tea room. You dont guess your tax obligations or your marketing plans, so dont guess your opportunities to better look after your people and the communities around you. It is time that we continue to move beyond the posters in the tea room, and change business, for good. #jbnproject #socialimpact #business

01.01.2022 In Melbourne, a 279-foot-tall (85-metre-tall) image of William Barak was used to form the facade of an apartment building called Swanston Square. This magnificent facade prompted us to tell the story of Barak, and to commit to making an effort to speak of the outstanding indigenous people, indigenous achievement and indigenous culturein an effort to encourage others to look into the rich and wonderful legacy and continuing contribution of our first nations peoples across the ...country. To also acknowledge their struggles, their tragedies, their triumphs and foster a spirit of reconciliation, truth telling, care, understanding and equality of opportunity for all first nations peoples, here and abroad. The figure whose portrait features on Swanston Square is Barak. Barak was born in the early 1820s at Brushy Creek near present-day Croydon, in the country of the Wurundjeri people. His mother, Tooterrie, came from the Nourailum bulluk at Murchison, Victoria. His father, Bebejern, was an important member of the Wurundjeri clan. Barak was said to have been present as a boy when John Batman met with the tribal elders to purchase the Melbourne area in 1835. Before he died he described witnessing the signing of the treaty in a ceremony he called a tanderem. When he joined the Native Mounted Police in 1844, he was given the name of William Barak. He was Police Trooper No.19. Upon the death of Simon Wonga in 1875, Barak became the Ngurungaeta of the clan. He worked tirelessly for his people and was a successful negotiator on their behalf. He was a highly respected man and leader, with standing amongst the Indigenous people and the European settlers. Barak died at Coranderrk in 1903 and is buried at the Coranderrk cemetery. He was about 85 years old. Barak is now best remembered for his artworks, which show both traditional Indigenous life and encounters with Europeans. Most of Baraks drawings were completed at Coranderrk during the 1880s and 1890s. They are now highly prized and exhibited in leading public galleries in Australia. His work is on permanent display in the National Gallery of Victoria Ian Potter Centre. @ Swanston Square Sky Deck
