23.01.2022 I was in an accident serving in Afghanistan in 2012 and I had a spinal cord injury that paralysed me temporarily. So I had to relearn how to walk again, but I ...also came home to a partner that was ex-air force and dealing with her own post traumatic stress disorder and depression, anxiety. So, I came home injured with my own issues to someone in an already terrible state. It was a couple of years of really miserable relationship where we kind of imploded, and it was sad because all we wanted to do was help each other but we ended up just dragging each other down. And you isolate yourself from the people that you love because you have nothing good to say. If people ask you how you’re doing: well, I’m doing fucking shit. Then my ex-partner tried committing suicide and within a few days, the mental health hospital gave her unescorted leave and she ran away, and I was chasing her, looking for her till I found her at 5.00 in the morning. And then I had to go to work that day and do a security interview, which are hard enough at the best of times, and I just went in and told them, Look, this is what’s been happening for the last nine months. I’ve been drunk and coming to work and keeping you guys happy, and my boys happy, but I can’t do it anymore; I need some help. I was lucky enough that my chain of command immediately got me involved with the alcohol dependence program and the PTSD program and Mates 4 Mates. I know I’ve got a long way to go, but I have all this cool support, which I am so very grateful for and yeah, I’m not afraid to ask for help anymore. I’m going to use this horrible experience to try and do something good with it. Take this shitty painful stuff I’ve been through, and help other people. And if I could just get through to one person and maybe save one life, then I’d go through it all again in a heartbeat.

22.01.2022 "This is one of the subjects that's not discussed and it needs to be" Annette and Stuart stress the desperate need for increased awareness, health professional ...training and family support, after tragically losing their daughter Mary to an eating disorder. This May, we are calling for change: https://thebutterflyfoundation.org.au/maydays If you are worried about yourself or someone you care about, please call our National Helpline 1800 33 4673 (8am - 9pm Weekdays) or Lifeline 13 11 14. #MAYDAYS17 #helpanswerthecall

22.01.2022 If there's one thing that I've learnt, the manly thing to do is to put your hand up and say 'I've got a problem'. - Gus As seen in episode 3, Gus created a ca...mpaign ad to get his message out far and wide. Help us by sharing his ad, speak up and encourage others to speak up, and most importantly listen when they do. We are all in this together! #ManUp #SpeakUp #ListenUp

19.01.2022 The Border Mail reports on this Wesley Mission course presented last Monday. In partnership with Suicide Prevention Albury Wodonga. I got a lot out of this - their 'SALT' model is easy to understand and apply. Highly recommend if you have the chance to attend one of these sessions. "Ms Halliday said more than 80 per cent of people who took their lives gave warning signs beforehand and all talk of suicide should be taken seriously."

14.01.2022 If you are local to Albury Wodonga it's not too late to sign up for this informative session put on by Wesley Mission and Suicide Prevention Albury Wodonga - Monday 10 April starting midday.

14.01.2022 'I was a problem and I didn't know how to deal with it' Not sure what 12 year old would know how to deal with the death of his mother, but good to know Prince Harry has been able to reach out for help, and is encouraging others not to be afraid to also do so.

13.01.2022 What a deeply saddening and challenging issue. Generally speaking a profession to get into that can take a decade of academic competition and relentless study pressure. At uni a further 6 years of study where failure of specific exams can mean expulsion. On completion a period of internship - long long hours, high pressure environments. A culture where it's perceived that saying you're struggling could end what you've worked for for most of your life. Not rocket science what's going on here. Specifically, we know that people bereaved by suicide are at higher risk than the general population. I am particularly saddened by Chloe's story, that she found herself in a place of such unbearable and 'hopeless' emotional pain.

08.01.2022 Great feature in the Border Mail at the weekend, what an inspiring initiative!

08.01.2022 I know that 4 people died yesterday in a terrible, terrible accident. But what about the 8 who died by suicide. Will their families receive the same support, the same community outrage?

06.01.2022 ""Sometimes, they just need to talk, so the best thing you can do is listen. Don't feel as though you'll always need to fix their concerns or find solutions." Sound advice! and can be applied to anyone in any situation really :)

05.01.2022 I grew up in inner city Newcastle, Mum worked at Woolies and Dad was a travelling salesman. When I was 8, Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer and it spread to ...his liver and he died when I was 10. He was a blokey bloke, but also very loquacious and very funny. I went to a co-ed school, I was terrified of girls, and I was the little fat kid. The coach of my rugby team used me as a training tool. If I beat any kid running around the oval, they had to stay back and do laps. I suppose I had some screwed up ideas about masculinity because when you’re a teenager and your mate starts getting pecs and you’re getting boobs, it does mess with your head. I overcompensated by having a gross sense of humour. It was a desperate plea for help, which I turned into a career. With my work, I tend to be out of sync with my friends who have 9-5 jobs. I’m either travelling or working late cause I do stand up so it’s hard to catch up. And once you’re over 40 you don’t make many new friends. There’s that Seinfeld gag, ‘you seem like a nice guy but we’re just not hiring’. If a mate wants to vent, I’ll let him vent. But, most of my mates don’t want to be a burden which is silly. If you’ve got a broken leg, you go to the doctor, you don’t walk around with a broken leg just to show you’re strong and coping. Something I’ve learnt late in life is shut up and listen. Don’t feel like you can fix the problem, sometimes your loved ones just want you to shut up and listen. It’s taken me 50 years to figure the fuck out of that one. The best advice my wife told me was from one of those celebrity magazines, I think it was Michael J Fox. If you spend your whole life worrying about the worst thing that can happen, and then the worst thing happens, you’ve already lived it twice. So stop worrying. I mean, we should be concerned about our lives, I’m not always a happy camper, but when I get worked up, I remember that.

05.01.2022 How's this for a good idea, well done Country Women's Association (CWA) of NSW.
