02.01.2022 Odour imprinting with the 10 week old pups. For us it has two purposes. - Odour recognition... - Shaping the indication response For this exercise at the moment we use food. Pointers from genetics are hunting dogs and they enjoy the hunt/search in itself. We still do teach them how to search in low drive and how to search in high drive as a seperate exercise/skill. We also develop their drive for the toy. During this exercise some of the pups are showing their genetics. They will lift their paw up and stand in a point. All pups have done now close to 6 short sessions. Teaching a dog an odour can be done in 101 ways but the concept is often still the same. It is either used as target training exercise (back chaining) or the dog is shaped on to the odour (front chaining). The possibility of pairing the odour up with a high value reinforcer is also there (meaning putting a toy literally next to the odour). But you will see us rarely do this. How higher the reinforcement history on the odour how stronger the behaviour. That's the advantage working with puppies as we work with a clean sheet Whilst using back chaining and working on the fluency of the indication behaviour such as precision, latency and speed. We will less likely get the undesirable behaviours at the odour such as pawing and scratching. This means if your goal is a passive indication. As much at the start this is something we really want to train well. It is only a small part of a much bigger picture. If the dog doesn't like to search independently away from the handler, then it becomes a bit problematic. If the dog isn't environmentally and socially sound. How will you then ever reach the goal of taking your dog out for a real life search? On leash and off leash. This is a picture taken in our shed where the dog is on odour. A year from now you will see the same dog on odour in a massive stadium.
