25.01.2022 Because we had so many questions about what to do when bringing dogs back after a long agility break. Walter Dingemanse has written this post to illustrate the ...impact and work that goes into physically training and preparing a dog for agility after a competition and training break. All this has been done under guidance Walter, a rehab professional (DVM, PhD, MRCVS). Dobby is a 4 year old male Border Collie competing at high level agility (Member of Agility Team GB, Winner of Agility Champ run at Crufts), and is currently brought back into training after a 6 week break. His 6 week break included 4 weeks of just low intensity walks and loving life in the garden (fortunately coinciding with some nice weather here in the U.K.), followed by 2 weeks of increased walks, swims and just some foundation flexibility and strength work. After this he started his 8 week program of working back to full training and competing fitness and we are now at week 6/8. The last six weeks have included increased intensity strength and flexibility work to work on musculoskeletal condition, sustained treadmill trotting, UWTM and pool swims to work on cardiovascular fitness. Two weeks ago he started simple sequences on medium (400), after 2 weeks of different gridwork and jumping fitness exercises. Last week was slightly more challenging sequences on 500 and back to full height running dogwalks, but only easy exits. Today is the first day of full height jumps (600), in an adjustable stride grid. The aim for next week (week 7/8) is to do some high intensity strength work (treadmill resistance training) and cardiovascular workouts (pool swimming and free swimming). Agility specific work will include some easy sequences on full height, as well as some weave work and more challenging running dogwalk exits. Week 8/8 will see a continuation of cardiovascular workouts and more challenging sequences in preparation for the normal training regime and potentially some competitions once they are allowed again. Agility, whether training of competing, whether at high international level or local national competitions, is an extremely demanding sport. We owe it to them to get them in the best possible shape BEFORE doing agility. Agility is not a way to get your dog fit, nor should it be taken lightly as a ‘give it a go have fun’ activity once a month. We are lucky to have the support of FitPaws UK and Camddwr Canine Ltd, supplying us with fantastic canine fitness equipment .

20.01.2022 **UPDATE** **The response to this course has been OVERWHELMING!! I feel incredibly heartened by this display of love and commitment to the well being of our beloved senior dogs. Sadly, as I have a problem turning people down, the huge number of applicants means that I have to stop accepting registrations. I hope to re offer this course again as my continuing commitment to our seniors so I hope those that missed out will have another opportunity to participate. In the inter...im, if you need any help/advice with your senior dog, please feel free to contact me. Having had 2 sport dogs retired from their sport, grow old and eventually sadly passing on, I have given a lot of thought to what I would have done different with regards to their senior years. ** Now I am once again faced with two sport dogs retiring and have a chance to do smarter & better by them. So, what to do with the retired sports dog? I invite you to join me on a FREE 6 weeks FB online fitness course for senior sports dogs. In addition to age appropriate fitness exercises, we introduce general techniques of home massage, PROM and stretching to maintain soft tissue health & mobility. We will also discuss different enrichment games for our senior dogs for their mental and emotional wellbeing as well as their changing nutritional requirements.
