20.01.2022 On the 21st of September this lovely gal was picked up after being hit by a vehicle and finding her way to a trampoline. The resident then took the bird to the vet, before she was brought to Kaarakin on Tuesday morning. Now nicknamed 'Tramp', she was battered and bruised from the vehicle strike but is well on the road to recovery and eventual release. She seems to be a music lover, making a racket in the car when the music stopped . For now she will stay in the clinic in a ...small aviary for observation, feeding and care before moving to one bigger clinic aviary with other patients. If you encounter a black cockatoo emergency, call Kaarakin on 9390 2288 or bring the cockatoo to a nearby vet as they need urgent care. While doing so, make sure you cover them with a towel and place them gently in a box. Also remember to donate to our cause to help us get these beautiful birds back out there!

16.01.2022 When Michelle and Alec were getting their firebreak cleared last Friday, Alec suggested they should contact us so Michelle did. Kaarakin volunteers went and collected some perches and enough browse to make all the cockatoos happy. Thank you Michelle and Alec for thinking of us, the birds thank you also.
16.01.2022 Did you know that the WA Museum Boola Bardip has been running the Cockatoo Care program since 2001? The program studies the distribution of Baudin's, Carnaby's and Red Tailed Black Cockatoos to assess threats to the survival of the species and encourage conservation and protection whilst implementing practical measures such as development of artificial nest boxes and tubes, researching feral bees and providing community education. You can learn more about WA's black cockatoos... via their website and by visiting - it's a wonderful destination for the weekend or for the end of the school holidays...and you can even see our very own Kaarakin cockatoos and wonderful volunteers featured there! Special shoutout to the talented Leila Jeffreys, whose artistic talents and passion for photographing rescued wild birds bring to life the individual characters of each cockatoo. See more

14.01.2022 Did you know that parrots, like humans, choose to use one side of their body more than the other? Most are left-footed, and some species even try out both before deciding on one side.

12.01.2022 In December last year, a young red-tailed black cockatoo was handed in from Marri Park Golf Course to Hammond Park Vet with a shattered beak, courtesy of a stray golf ball. Veterinarian Dr Pete Ricci crafted a brace for its broken beak, the first time such a device had been trialled. Within a short time, the youngster was self-feeding and had been given the name Beaky. Initially supervised at Perth Zoo, Beaky came to Kaarakin in January 2020 and began the long road to rehabil...itation. On August 6th, fully healed after eight months care, Beaky was finally released with some other red-tails, like the young male in the video. From here they joined a flock in John Forrest National Park and went in their merry way. A heart-warming end to an incredible story of strength and persistence, farewell Beaky! 10.01.2022 A Bullsbrook market gardener has been fined $18,000 with costs of $618 after satellite imagery showed he had illegally cleared approximately 8.8 hectares of native vegetation. An application for a clearing permit had been made to the then Department of Environment and Conservation but was refused as the banksia woodland contained foraging habitat for the endangered Carnaby’s black cockatoo. Comments attributed to Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:... "Adhering to decisions on clearing permit applications is vital to ensure that inappropriate clearing of native vegetation does not take place. "Clearing native vegetation after an application was refused is a serious matter as it undermines the integrity of Western Australia's environmental laws." https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//Satellite-surveilla Photo for illustration purposes only.
10.01.2022 Unfortunately due to land clearing, less natural habitat is available to many species such as black cockatoos. Black cockatoos are very intelligent and found ways to survive by eating orchard crops and other non native food. There are calls for the state and federal governments to expedite the release of $1.5 million allocated under a federal scheme for netting. Mr Casotti who operates orchards from Northampton to Donnybrook said the Federal Government had offered grants of u...p to $300,000 as part of a $1.5 million grant scheme to fund netting projects in WA in late 2019, but growers were yet to see any funding. $1.5 million dollars was only a fraction of what was needed to help the industry adopt netting systems and called on the State Government to offer additional funding. "The cost of netting at around $50,000 per hectare is also cost prohibitive for most growers in the current market environment, so we're asking the Government to step in," Mr Scott said. 09.01.2022 Thanks for your visit, Rob! Rob came to visit Kaarakin this month to learn more about black cockatoos. Each week he creates a video on a good-news story in Perth and shares it on his Youtube channel. Rob was able to follow the journey through from rescue to release, and he spoke to one of our volunteers, Mel, about how the centre operates. Check out his video to see some of the faces we are familiar with at Kaarakin, and thank you Rob for dropping by to share our message of conservation.
09.01.2022 We need stronger nature laws, not weaker ones! Please join BirdLife Australia in demanding nature laws that actually protect nature. We can stand together to stop the roll-back of environmental protection More info

09.01.2022 Sharing is caring. Our education ambassador Rex would only share marri seeds with her BFF (best feathered friend) Muffy the Major Mitchell. Rex and Muffy came to Kaarakin together in 2012 and are very closely bonded. They will preen each other but Rexy can get over zealous. You can help keep them working towards saving our black cockatoos by adopting either or another of our animals. Please go to https://blackcockatoorecovery.com/get-involved/adoptions/ Every dollar raised go towards trying to save our black cockatoos.
08.01.2022 Do you know how to tell the five different subspecies of red tails apart? If not, don’t stress, Sam will show you how! 07.01.2022 A beautiful forest red-tailed black cockatoo, rocking a satellite and GPS tracker courtesy of Murdoch's Black Cockatoo Conservation Management Project! The tracker birds are being used to look at flock movement on the Swan Coastal Plain and the southwest forest region to help with conservation planning. This bird has made a rather big trip in the last couple of weeks, heading south from John Forrest National Park to Dandalup, just south of Serpentine!
06.01.2022 Some #dingo cuteness for your Thursday morning perusal! Kaarakin has had resident dingoes since day dot and they’re and invaluable part of our centre in so many ways. Did you know, we even have dedicated volunteers specifically trained in their handling, feeding and walking? 05.01.2022 Every Spring, it starts again. We receive calls from the public about red tails on the ground. All of them have no tail feathers. This is sadly the most common sign that these red tails have been attacked by ravens. If the red-tailed cockatoo is on the ground and is not able to fly, and/ or has lost feather and/ or is bleeding: Use a large towel to cover the bird;... Place the bird in a secure cardboard box or travel pet-pack; Place box in a warm, quiet place; Call Kaarakin on 9390 2288. You can also bring the cockatoo to a nearby vet. Find out more why ravens attack red tails and what to do: https://blackcockatoorecovery.com/why-do-ravens-attack-red/
03.01.2022 We recently welcomed a corporate work group from Energy Policy WA. They did a fantastic job spreading mulch and weeding around our rehabilitation aviaries. A visit with our black cockatoos in the Interactive Aviary was the perfect finish to the day. We greatly appreciate your support!
