25.01.2022 Food waste solution: Kaduna Park residents will soon have an environmentally responsible way to dispose of food waste through their green waste bins. From Monday 28 September, all food scraps, including fruit and vegetables, cooked and uncooked meat, dairy products, processed foods and more, can be placed in the green waste bin to be composted into nutrient rich soil for Victorian farms and gardens. The new service will provide a solution to the problem of food waste in the ...shire. Around 32% of Cardinia Shires household waste is spoiled food or food scraps, which currently goes straight to landfill. When food waste decomposes in landfill it produces methane a harmful greenhouse gas and creates leachate a toxic landfill liquid that can pollute the land, ground and waterways. Residents who already have a green waste bin will receive a free food in green waste bin kit including a benchtop kitchen caddy, flyer and sticker during the rollout period of 28 September to 19 October 2020. Once received, it can be used immediately. Ratepayers can order a green bin any time of the year. The annual fee for 20202021 is $123.20 for the 240L green bin or $90 for the 120L green bin. Green bins will continue to be collected fortnightly and are available in two sizes: the standard 240L bin and a new smaller 120L bin for smaller households with less garden waste needs. Learn more about the service at a free online information session on Thursday 10 September from 7pm-8pm or Saturday 12 September from 10.30am-11.30am. To book or for more information, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/greenwaste To order a new or additional green bin, visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/orderbins, phone 1300 787 624 or email [email protected]. Rental tenants will need to contact their property manager or landlord. People who have a compost bin at home can continue to use it. Cardinia Shire Council offer rebates of up to $50 for Cardinia Shire residents who buy a compost bin, worm farm or mulcher visit www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/wasterebates for more information. See more

20.01.2022 We all scream for ice cream in July! Whether you are a chocolate, vanilla, mocha or strawberry fan, July is the month to scream, as the famous song goes, for ice cream. According to Roy Morgan research nearly 10 million Australians include ice cream in their regular supermarket shop. ... And despite it being the middle of winter in Vic, that doesnt mean Aussies cant celebrate the nations favourite cold treat throughout July. Of course its easier for our American and European friends, who embrace National Ice Cream Month at the height of their summer. In fact National Ice Cream Month started, where else, but in the United States! President Ronald Regan signed national Ice Cream Day into law in 1984. And although the resolution only mentioned a specific month and day in that year, the celebrations have been eagerly scooped up by ice cream lovers around the world ever since. This year Ice Cream Day falls on Sunday 19 July. According to the BBC, humans have had a long love affair with frozen milk. An ice cream-like food was first eaten in China in 618-97AD. King Tang of Shang, had 94 ice men who helped to make a dish of buffalo milk, flour and camphor. An early version of ice cream was invented in China about 200 BC when a milk and rice mixture was frozen by packing it into snow. Charles I of England is supposed to have offered his chef 500 a year to keep his ice cream recipe a secret from the rest of England. It is thought the explorer Marco Polo saw ice cream being made during his trip to China in the 1200s and introduced it to Italy. And as for the ice cream cone, a Syrian called Ernest E Hamwi is believed to have invented it during the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair in the US. Ernests waffle booth was next to an ice cream vendor who ran short of dishes. As a favour, Ernest rolled a waffle to hold his ice cream and the cone was born. While there are endless commercial ice cream flavours available, why not give making ice cream at home a go? Kids will love making and then eating this simple no churn vanilla ice cream. You can even play around with different flavours.

14.01.2022 Everyone needs good neighbours: A bid for freedom by his beloved Border collie presented an unexpected opportunity for new Kaduna Park resident Brent Andrews to meet his neighbours. Brents beloved dog, Alley, escaped shortly after Brent and partner, Alissa Atkins, moved into their new home in June. Neighbours, who live two doors down, took in Alley and set about returning her to Brent. They posted on the Kaduna Park Facebook page and followed up on the information on Alleys... tag. The couples are now firm friends. "Every time I see them outside we have a five or 10 minute chat about what is going on in each others lives," said Brent. "Its great. Weve met so many people since we moved in." With National Friendship Day looming on 30 July, Brents experience is being replicated across the estate as more people make Kaduna Park their home. For young mum Brooke Hunter Kaduna Parks playground was the perfect place for her son Lucas, 9, to make new friends. Brooke, Lucas and her mum Denise moved into one of the townhouses opposite the playground in December. "Before Covid he made so many friends. It was so nice to see him playing out there with other kids from all age groups and cultures. They all have so much fun together playing basketball, cricket, 40/40 or hide and seek," said Brooke. "One minute Lucas will be out there by himself and the next minute kids come from everywhere and there will be 15 or 16 of them all playing. I keep a watch on him, but it makes him feel grown up." Denise has also made firm friends with the lady in the townhouse next door. "They get along really well and its good for mum to have someone right next door she can talk to. When we moved in Lucas said he was so happy that he has friends at the park and Nanna has a friend right next door." Brent and Alissa love the community vibe at Kaduna Park. "You see a lot of different people in their front yards and out walking. Everyone talks to each other." "Living at Kaduna Park is like living in a country town. Everyone knows everyone." The couple looked at other estates but couldnt find the sense of community they were seeking until they found Kaduna Park. "We love it. I have fixed up the front yard and Alissa has done an amazing job inside. For us Kaduna Park is a dream, its perfect." See more

14.01.2022 Congratulations to our winners of our Kaduna Park Turns 3 Competition! Here is one of our favourites, submitted by Pearl, Kaduna Park Resident. "We, a small family of 3, mum dad and me moved into our new house in June 2019. We were one of the early settlers in Kaduna Park. This is our dream home, we absolutely love living here. The neighbours are all very friendly and I have made so many friends here. We even have our gang of kids called The O'Barnett Group as I am from Barn...ett drive and almost 9 of the other kids are from the Oban Road. It is absolutely lovely to do the bike riding together in the afternoon. We sometimes go to the new path around the lake to drive our bikes. It is so much fun! The best part of the waking up in the morning is, as soon as I open my window blind I get to see the cows grazing the grass in the surrounding areas. I sometimes even spot a rabbit or two in the night when it is quiet. I think it was the best decision my parents made building a house here! Love it!" See more

14.01.2022 We are excited here at Kaduna Park as we proudly roll out the Flavours of Kaduna Park cookbook! Supported by a grant from the Cardinia Shire and featuring contributions from our worldly and wonderful KP residents, this very special book is bursting with delicious recipes for you to try at home. A heartfelt thanks to Residents' Group President Siggy Rehburg, Cr. Tammy Radford and Cardinia Shire for their contributions to this tasty project. Want a copy? 13.01.2022 A book to nourish the community : The Kaduna Park Residents Group is cooking up a project to bring people together who are hungry for connection in these trying times. The group has secured a grant from Cardinia Shire Council to publish a cookbook featuring recipes contributed by the Kaduna Park community. Group president Siggy Rehburg hopes everyone will get involved. Siggy and his wife Therese moved to Kaduna Park just before Christmas. The couple relocated to Australia fr...om New Zealand five years ago, living in Glen Waverley and Scoresby before building at Kaduna Park. They were taken by the community orientated values of developer Parklea Developments and were impressed with Parkleas earlier estate, Timbertop Estate. "Kaduna Park has a nice feel about it. It is almost in the country but still in suburbia. We love living close to fields and cows," said Siggy. Siggy hopes the cookbook will reflect the multi-cultural make-up of the Kaduna Park community. "There are so many nationalities living here. Even on our committee we have people from Sri Lanka, India, China and we are from New Zealand. "Everybody likes cooking and were all doing more of it now were staying home." All Kaduna Park residents are encouraged to contribute. The residents group is looking for dishes people can recreate easily at home, which also have a story or are of special family significance. "We would love to know if a dish has been handed down through your family for instance. We are leaving it up to residents to submit what they want. If we end up with all dinner dishes then thats fine." The book will be professionally printed and, all going well, Siggy hopes second, third and fourth editions can include contributions from people who will join the Kaduna Park community in years to come. "And when we finally get the chance to get together, we hope to have an event in the park where everyone brings their dishes to share," said Siggy. Siggy and Thereses contribution to the cookbook will be a recipe for smoked fish pie they call the "travellers dish". "Its a great dish to serve guests who have been travelling all day. Its a simple dish but my wife has made it her own," said Siggy. The residents group also encourages people to submit their photographs of life at Kaduna Park. These will also be incorporated into the book. Siggy hopes to have the cookbook published towards the end of August and the launch event in Spring. The most important thing for us is that it re engages us again and gets people communicating. "Its a great project and I hope everyone gets involved." See more
