23.01.2022 One of the greatest game changers in doing this work is taking a root cause approach to challenging behaviors. When a child throws their toy When a child h...its you, or another kiddo When a child is screaming So often we find ourselves focused on those behaviors and how to make them stop as fast as possible, rather than what's going on beneath the surface. What's going on at the root. What are they really communicating? What’s being said without words? What need are they, likely subconsciously or unconsciously, trying to meet? As long as we respond only to the behavior punishing them for hitting, a time out for throwing the toy, yelling at them to stop screaming we will continue to see the same or new behaviors surface. It’s like pushing pause temporarily, knowing it’ll be back until that need is met and root emotion is responded to. The challenge is that behaviors can trigger our emotions and unmet needs. We may have triggers come up from our past, inner narratives about our own childhood ("I never would have gotten away with hitting), or feel fears coming up about the future ("Will my child be a trouble maker? Will they always be hitting"). The true magic is when we can return to the present to SEE the child in front of us and get curious about their current need.
