22.01.2022 Sharks in Lake Macquarie As kids growing up in Lake Macquarie, you were always scared/cautious about swimming in the Lake. Last easter weekend our childhood nightmares came true as a shark breached the surface near our tiny tinny.... Whilst it was no Great White it was enough the scare the hell out of us and so we high tailed it as fast as the tiny 6HP motor would take us. Have you experience any encounters with our marine friends in the Lake or beach?

17.01.2022 Remember when for recess, you would get milk in a bottle? Ahh.. the good old days.. when crates of milk were delivered and sat on the balcony outside the Kindy room.. getting warm in the morning sun. Although these images are not specific to KPS (K-2), they are terrific reminders of years past :-)

17.01.2022 School gets a lick of paint courtesy of some local charities. CityServe at Kahibah public school was lots of fun. A team of young people who among other things moved a mountain of mulch taller than themselves. Others painted the ceiling of a long verandah, weeded and restored gardens. All up there were probably about 50 people there from the Belair Baptist, Hunter Christian Church and the school. The school put on a bbq at lunchtime and they were very appreciative of all that was done. Source: CityServe

13.01.2022 Naming the Nameless A reserve in Kahibah used to be called the Park with No Name, Daphne Hughes says. She’s delighted it now has a name.... After much discussion it is now Pit Pony Park, she said. Kahibah Public School kids helped name the park after ponies that hauled coal. Pit ponies played a vital part in the history of coal mining in the area, Daphne said. https://www.theherald.com.au//battle-lines-drawn-for-clas/

07.01.2022 A competition which has seen more than 75,000 contestants compete in the past 10 years has just marked its 10th anniversary with a very special celebration. The Hunter Region Primary Mathematics competition, whose Director is University Lecturer, Mr Fred Bishop, has enjoyed huge success and has grown steadily since its inception in 1981 under the sponsorship of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society. The competition, which commenced with 2,337 from 70 primary schools from a...round the Region, has now increased to the point where more 11,00 pupils from 215 primary schools competed this year, bearing in mind that they are Years 5 and 6 only. The occasion of the competition’s 10 anniversary was marked by a reception and luncheon attended by the Minister for School Education and Youth Affairs, Mrs Virginia Chadwick, The Executive Director of the Australian Schools Mathematics Competition, Assoc. Professor Peter O’Haloran, The Assistant Director General of School Education in the Hunter Region, Mr Alan Beard, The Director of Schools, Mr Ray Kelly, the Member for Newcastle, Mr George Keegen, MP, representatives of the of the Newcastle Permanent personal, proud parents, school principals and teachers, and the winners of the competition for the past nine years as well as this year’s winners. Managing Director of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society, Mr Frank Wotherspoon, said the competition would not have been possible without Mr Bishop’s enthusiasm and that it was vert gratifying to see talented children rewarded for their efforts. In his speech, Assoc. Professor O’Halloran, said, that the purposes of Mathematics competition were to arouse mathematics interest and enthusiasm, to encourage problem-solving and creativity, to bring to light mathematical talent, to direct abler student s to advanced techniques and to supply teachers with resources material. Mathematics competitions such as these motivate, challenge, encourage, stimulate and popularise the learning of mathematics, he said. The winners of this year’s competition were Martin Barry from Coal Point Public School and Neil Wright from Belair Public School, joint winners for the Year 6 section and Paul Faulkner from Kahibah Public School and Nick Randall from New Lambton Public School, joint winners for the Year 5 section. Mr Bishop said the calibre of the winners was of a very high standard as was the level of mathematical skills throughout the whole competition. He said that one of the qualities required if a mathematician was persistence and that the winners of this year’s competition had certainly demonstrated that quality."
