15.01.2022 Clinto's Kupmurri food truck brings bush tucker to the streets Look at the food truck offerings in any major city and you'll find a smorgasbord of tacos, burgers, banh mi, pasta, pizza, paella and "gourmet sausages". Perhaps a couple of dumpling trucks to round out the fleet and a vegetarian van hawking granola bars. What you probably won't find, however, is a food truck focusing on native Australian foods. Clinton Schultz, a Gamilaraay man, is set to change that.... Together with his wife Lozen, the chef and psychologist and Gold Coast local has launched Clinto's Kupmurri, a food truck influenced by traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cooking methods and serving native foods. The business is a platform to raise awareness of healthy eating as much as it is about providing delicious food. "Bush tucker foods are rich in vitamins and nutrients that benefit everybody," Clinton says. "I'm really passionate about my Aboriginality, but I'm also passionate about human wellness in general." 06.01.2022 Clip description Each year in the Torres Strait Islands, the Coming of the Light Festival is remembered with religious services and with feasting. And the food for the feasts is always island food from island produce. Curator’s notes by Janet Bell... This clip shows SBS reporter Joanna Savill on Erub Island in the Torres Strait. She appears with Bill, a Torres Strait Islander who is introduced in the voice-over as the chief cook, overseeing and making preparations for a feast to be cooked in a kup murri, or ground oven. A great deal of detail is given showing the making of the kup murri which extends the familiar cooking show into something more akin to a cultural program. This is the strength of the clip; it’s not just about cooking but also about the cultural practices of Indigenous Australians and our social history. https://aso.gov.au///food-lovers-guide-australia-53/clip3/

01.01.2022 An Earth oven feast Bundaberg locals have the opportunity to indulge in a free Kup Murri feast on Sunday 7 July at the South Sea Islander Complex (QLD) from midday to 1.30pm. Kup Murri is an Indigenous method of cooking vegetables and meat, wrapped in paperbark, in a pit under the ground.... The ancient cooking method hails from Torres Strait Islands and Cape York. The 'Earth oven' style of cooking is popular throughout the Pacific and is similar to the lovo in Fiji, Hawaii’s imu and the Mori hangi. A hole dug in the ground and a large fire is allowed to burn down, reads a food technology article from Indigenous Australia online, explaining how a kup murri is created. Large stones are laid over the fire and heated by the coals. Leaves of palm trees or paperbark are used to line the heated pit with meats and vegetables laid in the hollow. These are covered with leaves and dirt and allowed to cook. After many hours the food is removed, and it tastes great. See weblink for more information
