25.01.2022 Lomu is a two year old Rottweiler who is very nervous in new environments and with new people. Lomu has a bite history with people and also had a shot at one of our trainers at our first consult. Lomu doesn't want to hurt people, but he is ruled by fear. Lomu struggled in our first consult, he was very afraid when he got out of the car, and when he was in our training shed.... Lomu's owners are dedicated and have been working our plan to help build Lomu's confidence, whilst also gaining the necessary control. At our next session I started to see improvements in Lomu. He was still lacking the confidence that I want to see in a dog but we are on the right path. Part of our plan was also to get Lomu playing, especially in new environments. Lomu's owners happily reported that he was now playing well at home. So we gave it a shot in the training shed. It took a good ten minutes to get Lomu to engage in a game of chase and catch with his owners. While they were getting the game going, Lomu's owners kept telling me, "he's showing us up, he's really good at home", but I assured them that this was nothing to worry about, he is just nervous about being away from home but to keep persisting and sure enough he started to play. When they were playing well I stood next to the owners. Lomu would bring the toy back but keep an eye on me, "what is this guy doing?". But I didn't engage, I just stood with them until I could see Lomu relaxing that I was with them. Then I asked Lomu's owners to pass me the toy when he returned it, and then I threw it. We kept doing this and slowly Lomu would start bringing it closer back to me. He never returned it directly to me, but that wasn't the goal of this session. In time he will. But this was a big step forward for Lomu, he accepted someone he doesn't know into a game. He didn't show aggression, he didn't shut down, he slowly started to trust that someone new isn't something he needs to fear. Also, there is no scientific basis to this claim, just anecdotal evidence, but Rottweilers are obsessed with the squeaky pig! - Ben A & the squeaky pig

11.01.2022 Our noseworks class went off-site today to give the dogs new environments to work in. A lot of work on the fundamentals has now produced dogs which can get out of a car at a site they’ve never been to and search for the target odour. All the dogs and handlers did extremely well which is a credit to their continued dedication to training and giving their dogs the opportunity to do a fun and genetic fulfilling activity. ... Registrations are now open for Term 2 noseworks.

08.01.2022 Introducing our newest board and train... Rags. Rags is with us for a week to polish up the foundations for Schutzhund, but that's not all we'll work on. Our board and train service puts a huge emphasis on helping dogs become braver, more social and have a lot of fun. So Rags will get plenty of time to play, explore and socialise. - Ben & Samantha

06.01.2022 Reminder for Sundays Schutzhund class that tomorrow is the last day of term. Don't miss it!

06.01.2022 Echo arrived this morning for his day stay Echo's owner Innika is crazy about him and always wants what is best for him, so when she has a long work day ahead instead of leaving him at home alone all day, she brings him for our "Day stay" Our focus with all dogs is always making sure they have a great time and are happy to keep coming back and while they're here why not get on top of a few issues.... So we asked Innika this morning what she would like us to work on. Innika reports that just recently Echo has been getting a bit crazy when people knock on the door and he doesn't settle down when she tells him to, so seeing as he will be joining us for day stay for the remainder of the week this is what we'll work on. We will use play to teach Echo to bark on command so we can then teach him to stop on command. We will also get started on place training so that when people come to visit Echo knows to stay on his place until he is allowed to come and say hello. We always have a lot of fun with this big goof and today will be no different. #bestjobintheworld - Ben and Samantha
