21.01.2022 The turkey bush (Calytrix exstipula) is flowering here right now. This pink-coloured shrub grows mainly in the sandy soils of open tropical woodlands. It grow...s scattered beside many roads and walking tracks in Kakadu. Turkey bushes have tiny, densely packed leaves and fine-haired pink flowers, which cover the shrub during Yekke and Wurrkeng (May to August) seasons. It has a wide variety of traditional uses. Bininj crush the flowers and leaves and rub them onto their skin as an insect repellent. The leaves and flowers can also be mixed with hot water to create a liniment for sore muscles. The wood of the shrub makes excellent firewood and is also used to craft clapsticks, woomeras and prongs for spears.

19.01.2022 Day one of the weaving workshop we were shown by Anita, Britt, Katie and Delaine how to collect the pandanus leaves. Everyone had a go at hooking and pulling the pandanus leaves from the trees. Lots of laughs and prickles in our fingers but we were successful in collecting enough to then learn how to prepare for dying.

19.01.2022 Please take note of the announcement that Kakadu National Park is closing for a period of two weeks.

13.01.2022 An update for visitors to Gunlom. A large 2.5 metre freshwater crocodile has recently been spotted in the Gunlom lower pool. Please remember freshwater crocodil...es inhabit this area and we strongly discourage visitors from entering the water. Known locally as freshies, they can become aggressive and cause injuries to visitors if they are disturbed. If you enter the water, you do so at your own risk. 08.01.2022 Kakadu Cultural Tours , like many businesses nationally and internationally, has been adversely affected by the seemingly endless and compounding effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are evidently living in difficult and unprecedented times. The Commonwealth have restricted non-essential travel and the Territory Government have closed the NT Borders in an attempt to halt the spread of the virus. The Director of Parks Australia has also announced that Kakadu National Park wil...l be closed from the 26th March to the 9th April 2020 and it is likely these restrictions will continue over the coming months. At this present point in time we are suspending our Kakadu Cultural Tours operations through to the 30th June 2020 namely; Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, Hawk Dreaming Wilderness Lodge & Arnhemlander 4wd Tour. Our intention is to re-access the suspension of operations before the end of June 2020. We really cant envisage well be operating at all for the rest of the 2020 calendar year. We have already agreed to roll our 2020 -2021 prices into 2021-2022 season. So that is a given. Dont hesitate to email booking requests for the 2021 calendar year. Stay safe and well.

05.01.2022 To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Kakadu National Park, weve put together 40 reasons to visit the park in 2019. #11 Jim Jim The colossal Jim Jim Falls is Ka...kadus biggest waterfall at 200m high. During the tropical summer, heavy rains fall across Kakadu, submerging vast tracts of land and fuelling these massive falls. The only way to see Jim Jim during this time is by air. As Kakadu moves into the dry season and Jim Jim dries up, its possible to walk through monsoon forest and over boulders to the base of the falls. Here youll be struck by the enormity of the surrounding cliffs. Check out our virtual tour of Jim Jim here http://bit.ly/2ZpuT4e. #SeeAustralia #SeeKakadu Tourism Top End Northern Territory - Australias Outback Australia.com

04.01.2022 After collecting pandanus and the roots from specific plants to make the dyes, we returned to Hawk Dreaming and learnt the art of stripping the pandanus to prepare it for dying and weaving. Our weavers made it look so easy, but we all took some time to develop our technique . Some of the group worked on stripping the roots and preparing the colours for dying the pandanus.
