This is my daily struggle in words and images.... My wellness routine is small to some, but to me it’s everything I need to change and grow. It has been easy to be behind the camera for this Kalai campaign, so doing this has actually been the hardest thing I have done in so long. Body image issues affect men and women alike, but as men we tend to hide it. SKIN: A Love Story by Kalai is an honest and brave look into our own personal relationships with our own skin. How we see it, feel it, how we wear it, hide it, live with personal pain through it and how, for years, we have let society use it to imprison us in our imperfections. For as long as I remember I have loathed my own skin. My lack of colour, muscle tone, shape and all this is only the beginning. For years this hate relationship for my skin has conditioned my relationship with others. I have grown up sexualising skin, judging it by colour, shape, size, blemish and by sex. Yes, I am guilty of this through my own dislike of my skin. It is only now, as I reach half a century, that I’ve finally grown to better understand this love/hate relationship we all have with skin. It is only now that my love handles are finely getting some love, my stomach is finely able to sign a long-term lease with my body and has moved in for the time being. Yes, I do everything I can to break that lease, but in the meantime I am semi-happy with the arrangement. I definitely have not accepted these flaws, but I’m learning to live with them within my limits and maybe, for the first time in my life, I am actually kind of welcoming these perfect imperfections. But then again, for wellness reasons I am not. When I look at myself, what was once a stretch mark is now a mark of movement through life. What was once a blemish is now my own personal piece of art no one else has. What I once considered a flaw, I now see as my story, my life, my mistake, my pain and my pathway through a life lived and a life loved. Continued in comments...
