25.01.2022 Today we remember Constable Mark Loohuys 9856 who was killed in an on-duty traffic crash in Glen Forrest in 2000. Loohuys and his partner were operating as a ra...pid response team and were responding to a call that a gunman was threatening a patron at the Chidlow Tavern. The unmarked V8 Commodore, in which they were travelling, left the road and smashed into trees off Great Eastern Highway at Glen Forest. Loohuys, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was killed. His partner survived the crash. The accident occurred 40 minutes before Loohuys was due to end his shift at midnight. He joined the service in 1996 and was only 22 years old when he died. Thank you for your service, We Will Remember
24.01.2022 What is your BACKUP PLAN if things don’t go the way you planned? Things don’t always go to plan in an emergency. Most fires start in the afternoon. Think ab...out what you’ll do if: you’re at work? your pets run away? the children are home alone? you’re at home alone? the children are at school? you have guests over? https://engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/bushfire for more information
24.01.2022 Over the weekend the Kalamunda VBFB did our pre-season assessments. These included burnover drills, pre-season refresher and a timed practical component. It is important that each and every operational volunteer firefighter is competent when turning out to incidents. . .... . . #firestation #firefighter #firetruck #volunteer #volunteerfirefighter #assessment #yearlyassessment #training See more
23.01.2022 Some reasonably good news for once....
22.01.2022 This morning the Brigade conducted a bushfire property protection exercise at a large and complex rural property in Carmel. This involved an assessment of risks, working out how to access water and developing a plan for defending the property if it was impacted by a fire. Bad bushfires mostly happen in the summer months but we spend all year making sure we are ready for them and that we can protect our community.

22.01.2022 While the majority of the Brigade's calls are to bush fires, we also attend a number of structural fires and fires involving hazardous materials each year. This morning was one of these calls, with a turn-out to the Walliston transfer station to extinguish a full skip load of electronic waste which had spontaneously caught fire. The City's transfer station team assisted in breaking up the tightly packed load, allowing our crew to reach and defensively attack the seat of the fire.
21.01.2022 On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month When the guns fell silent, we will remember.
20.01.2022 Update on our earlier post,
20.01.2022 We are very thankful for our community's generosity and support over the last week. Thank you. 74 of our members have volunteered 1300 hours of their time since February 1.

19.01.2022 Our thoughts are with our Californian comrades, especially the two firefighters who get rescued in the video embedded in this news report
19.01.2022 The fire danger rating for the City of Kalamunda on Tuesday the 24th of November 2020, is VERY HIGH. All permits to burn are invalid. There is no burning allowed - even small piles between 6pm and 11pm. Follow https://emergency.wa.gov.au/ for all the latest updates. Go to https://www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/our-city/fire/ for more information.
19.01.2022 After the Fire: the work isn't finished when the rain starts. Today volunteer brigades all over the southwest will be cleaning and checking their fire trucks. Six days straight of work in hot, smoky, dusty conditions and over really rough terrain takes a toll on our appliances. Three of our trucks basically didn't have their engines or pumps turned off for that whole time - they just kept going as old crews were replaced by new ones. So this morning we gave them the once over - there was damage to be fixed, they all needed to be thoroughly cleaned and checked, hoses needed rerolling, stocks needed replenishing, so we're ready to go for the next one. Then we finished it off with a BBQ breakfast .
18.01.2022 The Brigade has had three appliances at this fire since Monday afternoon. It is complex crewing them under Covid-19 Lockdown restrictions but we have Brigade members committed to keep doing so through to Friday at least. Our thoughts go out to the people who have lost their homes and we will keep working to stop any more house losses.
18.01.2022 Tomorrow, May 23rd, has been declared a Total Fire Ban due to the high winds coming in with the cold front. All permits are cancelled - please do not light any fires of any kind, at anytime tomorrow.

10.01.2022 Terrible fires in the western US States.
10.01.2022 It’s been a mammoth effort from fire and support crews from across the state this week assisting with efforts across the fire front. Since the start of the Wooroloo fires Kalamunda’s members have committed over 750 active fire fighting hours in three of our trucks, across 10 back to back shifts. This number is still climbing with crews allocated to shifts throughout the weekend.
08.01.2022 It has been a slow start to the fire season but it has really kicked off over the past few days with the strong easterly winds. Luckily we've had nothing in Kalamunda, but the Brigade has deployed crews to Kwinana and Red Gully (and we still have a couple of appliances at the former)
08.01.2022 Today's Rurual Urban Interface (RUI) exercise. RUI is an integral part of bushfire fighting and can be a potentially tricky and dangerous aspect of what we do. This is why we always make sure it's included regularly in our training. .... . . . #bushfirefighter #firetruck #firefighter #training #bushfiresaustralia #bushfires #perthhills #kalamunda #volunteer #volunteerfirefighter See more

07.01.2022 The Brigade had a busy day yesterday. While some of our members were honing their structural firefighting skills, others were attending the Burnsmart demonstration in Carmel, which was only slightly ruined by the rain (and at one stage, hail). Regardless, we did manage to get some grass trees burning, and about 35 members of the community attended to see a demonstration of how to maintain a bush block in a safe state, and discuss preparing for fires before they happen. Brigade members, along with City of Kalamunda staff, and members of the Kalamunda Volunteer Fire and Rescue were on hand to provide advice.

04.01.2022 There is only a small part of the City of Kalamunda that is not considered bushfire prone - parts of Forrestfield, High Wycombe and Wattle Grove. On January 15, 2021, a bushfire threatened homes in High Wycombe. Most of High Wycombe was under a bushfire warning of some kind. In 2020, a bushfire threatened homes near Dawson Park in Forrestfield.... A few years before then, a bushfire threatened homes in Wattle Grove. Think it won't happen to you? Think again. Make a plan. https://mybushfireplan.wa.gov.au/
04.01.2022 Without the smoke plume and air support, it might seem as though the fire is "out". But firefighters spend many days working to make sure the area is safe to prevent further outbreak of fire. Our crews are now home after a very busy few days. 43 of our volunteers contributed over 500 hours at incidents around the metro area in the last 7 days.
04.01.2022 Our teams are busy throughout the City, having completed 13 callouts so far. Isolated pockets in our area are without power and there's some branches and debris... across roads. We are currently experiencing a lull, with windy conditions expected to pick up again soon and remain throughout the night. For a full update, check the latest weather warning at www.emergency.wa.gov.au. Keep safe everyone. See more

01.01.2022 It has been a pretty huge last three days for the Brigade with our volunteers responding to nine fire calls, including a car and scrub fire, a burn off reignition, and seven illegal burns. We have also spent the whole weekend training our 2020 recruit school with 10 new firefighters doing their basic training and starting the long road to becoming firefighters. And we have done it all while maintaining strict physical distancing protocols. Great job Team!
