25.01.2022 Last week we brought six (of eight) new business owners to the Katherine October Business Month workshops 1) Getting Creative with Your Mobile 2) Grow Your Business with Facebook 2) Instagram Stories School. These new entrepreneurs learned how to use their mobile for business. Nobody had used Instagram before boomerang was a hit and you can imagine the laughs! It was a lot to absorb but we are looking forward to taking things to the next level - getting these lads and ladies set up to sell their products and services online. Thank you NT Government, FacebookBusiness, Dante St James, Google Clickstarter, Treeti Business Consulting and Knotts Crossing Resort for making this happen. We are keen to find out what your next business workshops are.

23.01.2022 Thanks Venndale Rehabilitation Centre Kalano for the shout out! Looking forward to posting more updates of our own. So much is happening and we are so proud of our new business owners! If you're interested in Ananais's art, please send us a message. Today we are helping him get set up online so he can ship across Australia and even internationally!

23.01.2022 This past Monday our group of CDP women visited Mimi Aboriginal Arts & Craft. Michael Miller hosted us and shared with us how the ladies can get their art in the gallery here in Katherine but also in their galleries across Australia. It sounds like Mimi has started up some of its own projects, which we are looking forward to hearing about in the new year. We found it interesting that they are short on female artists in this region when we know there are so many talented ladies. Visiting local businesses is proving to be a great way to engage CDP participants, build momentum for the Incubator program, increase our outreach through word of mouth, and educate clients about all of their options/opportunities. Thanks MIMI for having us!

22.01.2022 There's a lot of interest in starting a business selling art! So, we're doing some homework. Did you know what these symbols mean? Thanks, MIMI Arts for the light reading.

Your input will help us better understand the experience, needs and expectations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Indigenous stakeholders, and the Indigenous tourism sector. Your input will also help to define the design of the fund ensuring it provides value, focuses on gaps and barriers to success and increases opp...ortunities in the Indigenous tourism industry. 17.01.2022 A few weeks ago we took the ladies at CDP who have expressed an interest in becoming an entrepreneur to a local business (of their choice) in Katherine. They experienced an Aboriginal cultural experience at Top Didj to see what tourists pay the big bucks for! It is timely as the NT Government is about to invest BIG dollars into Aboriginal Tourism and yet of the 144 Aboriginal businesses in the NT only 52% are Aboriginal-owned/operated. Manuel hosted the activity and rocked... it! Would you believe he works 7 days a week during tourism season and is still smiling to tell the tale? He taught us about his traditional upbringing, how to make fire, paint with plant fibres (traditional brushes), sang for us, played the didgeridoo and taught us to spear throw. Best of all he shared his story on how he started working with Top Didj and all the adjustments he had to make in his lifestyle. Imagine the stories! Manuel makes for a great mentor and role model for anyone interested in business or sharing culture. Afterward we had a yarn about the challenges and barriers of getting into business and possible ways to overcome them. I’d say our first excursion was a success! If you’re interested in collaborating with us, please drop us a line by sending a message, leaving a comment or shooting an email to [email protected]

16.01.2022 This past Monday we took The Mob out to Nitmiluk Tours to learn about different opportunities and upskilling for business. It was especially informative for one of the Business Incubator clients as she intends to set up her own camping/cultural tourism business in Timber Creek. This is the Katherine Gorge in Jawoyn Country. The Jawoyn people believe that the deepest part of the second gorge is where the rainbow serpent went back into the earth after carving out the gorge and rivers, which is why they don’t swim in that part and offer fish to the serpent when passing by. The Jawoyn people understand that other people have different cultures, so they allow others to swim. Business Incubator Monday > your Monday

16.01.2022 About one and a half months ago, Kalano’s Business Incubator travelled to Kybrook Farm just outside of Pine Creek to meet with Ananias Naborlhborlh and plan for the GYRACC K-Space exhibition featuring his chosen theme, Dreamtime Stories and Animals Creating Land. Ananias was missing in action that day, which became a blessing in disguise. His next-door neighbour and family member, Sebastian Wesley, invited us into his home and backyard where Rodney Naborlhborlh, Brayden Mi...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Yikes! Indigenous artists preyed on and sent into debt by ‘carpetbagging’ art dealers, inquiry told. As the Incubator continues to work with artists here in Katherine and the greater region, this story is all too familiar and we are feeling incredibly protective of our entrepreneurs and community members. So, what can we do about it? Educate. Educate. Educate! Stay tuned, friends. We are in the early stages of developing an exciting project to help combat artist exploitation. 15.01.2022 Today we visited Top Didj Gallery & Cultural Experience to learn about their business -- how you might engage as a visitor or business owner to sell your art. Alex and Petrena have been in business for over 20 years and, by the sounds of it, they have seen it all! We’re looking forward to visiting them again with the ladies at CDP so they can learn first-hand what it’s like to start a business. Alex and Petrena will share what they believe are some of the challenges and barriers in starting Aboriginal-owned businesses. Together, we will discuss and explore how to overcome them.
