22.01.2022 Your Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants are back for 2020 with the newly formed WA State Basketball West Coast Classic competition getting underway this ...weekend. The Giants are on the road this weekend, taking on the Warwick Senators tonight at Warwick Stadium and then the Perry Lakes Hawks tomorrow. Although not part of the West Coast Classic, the Giants women are also taking the court in a series of exhibition games over the season. Both the Men's and Women's teams take on the Senators tonight, with the Women's game currently underway and the Men's game at 7pm. 16.01.2022 BASKETBALL UPGRADE ON THE CARDS The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Basketball Association has revealed plans for a significant redevelopment of the game's local hea...dquarters which could potentially cost up to $10 million. The Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium was built in 1979 and is deteriorating badly. Under the plan, the number of indoor courts would increase from three to five, including a marquee court for State Basketball League matches. KBBA chairman Rob Tagliaferri says the upgrade is long overdue. "It's over 40 years old, Mr Tagliaferri told the ABC. Basketball is such a significant part of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community and we've got the point where unless we upgrade our facility, there is going to be impacts on us and other sports that use this indoor facility going forward." The stadium has been home to the Goldfields Giants since 1990, but it no longer meets FIBA requirements to host SBL matches. Mr Tagliaferri says the cost of the project will likely be comparable to Esperance's new $7.8 million indoor stadium. "Based on what's happened in Esperance recently, where they've got a four-court stadium and associated amenities, we think it could be in the vicinity of $7 million to $10 million, he said. Consultants have toured the stadium as plans for State and Federal funding submissions progress, with the KBBA likely to have to come up with one-third of the funding on its own. 16.01.2022 Basketball WA is pleased to see the announcement from WA Premier, Mark McGowan who has pledged a $5million election commitment to support the rebuild of the K...algoorlie Basketball Stadium. The Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium could grow to a five court precinct with upgraded change rooms and a grandstand if WA Labor is re-elected following the March 2021 State election. Mr McGowan said this election commitment was based on Kalgoorlie’s high-level sporting output and ensuring the region had the facilities it needs to grow. So many famous sports men and women came out of Kalgoorlie and it’s very important we provide you with the best sporting facilities to recognise that and recognise the population of the area is growing, he said. Kalgoorlie Basketball Association chairman Robert Tagliaferri said the current facility was currently the only place to play competitive basketball in the city and the upgrade would be vital for the competition to continue. I think we offer a lot in terms of social responsibility and all the outcomes that we get but we are really restricted now, he said. It would be a combination of old and new so our intent is to build two new courts outside...and then to do a really large refurb inside. Mr McGowan said he was hopeful local builders would be involved in the construction, which would create five ongoing jobs once re-opened. With the season commencing tonight just a couple of reminders for all participants (senior competition and junior), volunteers and spectators. There is very limited space around the courts so please be mindful of others by;... Please listen to any instructions from the Games Controllers, or alternatively if you need any help please don’t hesitate to ask. Only Players, Coaches and Managers are permitted on the players bench Players/Coaches/Managers please move quickly from the bench after your game. A team talk can happen in another area of the stadium and this will allow the next team to put their equipment down and start to warm up promptly. Please let the Coaches Coach, the Players Play, the Referees Ref and the Spectators Encourage. We have a team of new and experienced referees all of whom are there to do their job to the best of their ability. We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of referees, coaches, players or spectators. Any persons displaying anti-social behaviour will be asked to leave the premises. Parents please note that any siblings should not be left unaccompanied and any vandalism, damage or anti-social behaviour from your children will result in you and your child being asked to leave the premises.
