24.01.2022 Golden light sweeping across the surrounding land You can catch glimpses of Mount Schank from different lookouts around the city but for panoramic views ventu...re up to the highest point of Mount Gambier near the Centenary Tower. It won't just be the short steep walk that will take your breath away, the view over surrounding farmland and out to Mount Schank will too. While its name leads you to believe it's a mountain, the volcanic cinder cone of Mount Schank is a rare example of volcanic activity in @southaustralia. Phil Ackland Images
23.01.2022 Grab your snorkelling partner this summer and hit the road to Mount Gambier to uncover some of Australia's most epic diving spots Stop 1 - Kilsby Sinkhole: Fe...el like you're floating on air at @KilsbySinkhole. Snorkel the surface or dive down below into the crystal clear depths of the natural cenote. Summer tours will be kicking off tours from the 13th of December. Stop 2 - Ewens Ponds: Follow the gentle current at Ewens Ponds as it flows through shallow channels connecting three basin-shaped freshwater ponds approximately 10 metres deep. Ewens Ponds will reopen to snorkellers and divers on the 1st of December. Stop 3 - Piccaninnie Ponds: This pristine paradise will take your breath away. Snorkel or dive down into the underwater caverns to explore the majestic white walls of sculptured limestone. @danparsons.freediver | http://ow.ly/358v50Cjl7X
19.01.2022 The view from the top before venturing down into this magical garden @dreamliveexplore recently snapped this stunning shot while visiting Umpherston Sinkhole... recently. With this photo comes a helpful tip. We love finding out tips from our travellers, especially when it comes from first hand experience. Her tip is to pack fresh fruits and veggies for the possums to enjoy...except fresh apple, apparently that's not the way to their hearts Explore other geological wonders in Mount Gambier >>> http://ow.ly/wfOD50Cf1J0 @dreamliveexplore (via IG)
18.01.2022 It's not hard to figure out where the Blue Lake got it's name Located in a volcano crater, the Blue Lake is renowned for its dramatic colour change each year.... It's now that time of year when the lake starts to change colour from a standard blue/grey to its famous bright blue Our tip: Take the time to enjoy the 3.6km walk around the rim of the lake, taking in the views at each lookout along the way To explore more lakes and volcanoes in Mount Gambier, click the link below. @clickonnature | http://ow.ly/YOGQ50CigbN
15.01.2022 M O U N T G A M B I E R Goodbye VIC, Hello SA! Another Border crossing We rocked up to Mount Gambier with the intention of staying at the Showgrounds but... they wanted $25 pn for an unpowered site yeh no thanks! We ended up getting a ripper deal of just $5 more pn ($30pn) for an en-suite powered site at Kalganyi holiday park and stayed a week with our travel buddies @townstraveloz! Great park, friendly managers and super close to shops! This post would be incredibly long if I went in to detail of how unreal each and every place we visited was so I’ll just dot form below * Mount Gambier Library - The best library we’ve ever stepped foot in entertained the kids for an hour! * Umpherston Sinkhole - so beautiful! * Blue Lake - unreal * Little Blue Lake - the men braved the apparent 12 degree year round lake and went for a snorkel * Mount Schank - Volcano * Caves Garden - A sinkhole in the middle of town * Mount Gambier Info Centre - so informative, kids enjoyed all the displays... this place was really cool! * Valley Lake Wildlife Park - great walk with lots of wildlife to spot * Port Macdonnell - 25 minute drive from mount gambier to check out the coastline and have some lunch (car sangas)!! Everything above !! There’s so much more Mount Gambier has to offer that we didn’t quite get to do or had a cost. It was one of my FAV places to date Kalganyi Holiday Park #twelvefeetaroundoz #familiesthattravel #caravanningwithkids #travelaustraliawithkids #bordercrossing #goodbyevic #hellosa #kalganyiholidaypark #mountgambier #umpherstonsinkhole #bluelake #littlebluelake #mountschank #volcano #cavesgarden #sinkholes #portmacdonnell #exploringoz #budgetfriendly #free #somuchfun #travelbuddies
14.01.2022 Forget the fake flower walls, Umpherston Sinkhole has taken photo backdrops to a whole other level! While lush green tones take over the sinkhole throughout t...he winter months, Umpherston Sinkhole starts to pop with vibrant colour mid-December through to February. Did you know: the colour of hydrangea plants are determined by the acidity of the soil? The more alkaline the soil, the pinker the flowers @wandering.fern (via IG) | http://ow.ly/WtKd50DElbN

05.01.2022 Hello spring During the months of spring, Umpherston Sinkhole starts to come to life with bursts of beautiful flowers! Towards the end of November and throughout December, the sunken garden is exploding with colour @little.fernplant | http://ow.ly/isHR50Bd7dK

02.01.2022 It is often what you can’t see that forms the biggest adventure of all. What is beneath us is like nowhere else in the world. As the volcanoes rocked the earth... over 5,000 years ago, lava caves formed, an array of sinkholes developed and breathtaking lakes established the limestone foundation of Mount Gambier. Umpherston Sinkhole, also known, as the Sunken Garden was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. Now the topsoil down on the floor forms the perfect environment for the sunken garden. @gabriella_jana
