24.01.2022 Miss Elsie Fletcher - grave tales

24.01.2022 From Lisa Burnette : Hi there, I would like to share some of my family history. This is the headstone in Boulder cemetery of my Great-Grandmother Madeline Ma...ry Dixon - born 22 Oct 1879 to Jane Brown and Josep Dixon at Adelaide, SA. Her parents were from Walleroo/Unley areas. Madeline married a John Albert Thomas, born at Walleroo Mines, in 1897 in Boulder. He must have been a miner. Mary had 3 children in Boulder - Irene (1898), Albert (1900) and Dorinda (1899) who all lived to adulthood. Madeline, however, whose grave is pictured, died in 1924 from sugar diabetes. My grandmother, Madeline Dorinda Spence, was the child of Irene Florence Myrtle Spence (nee Thomas), Madeline's eldest child. My father and our families went to Kalgoorlie in 2013 where we tidied up Madeline's grave, in the summer heat. It must have been an incredibly hard life for those women of the goldfields, and I think of my forebears often. See more

01.01.2022 Lord John Forrest died at sea on this day in 1918 on his journey to London seeking specialist cancer treatment in his declining health. After a temporary buria...l in the country of Sierra Leone where he died on passage, his body was returned to Western Australia for a State Funeral. He was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery some eight months later in a custom-built sarcophagus, fitting in stature for the accomplished man entombed within. As well as leading three expeditions into remote areas of Western Australia, he was the First Premier of Western Australia, and became a Cabinet Minister in the First Federal Parliament, helping to ensure Western Australia joined the Federation of Australian States. Shortly before his death he was bestowed with the title of Baron. To read more about the significant achievements of Lord Forrest that shaped our state, go to www.mcb.wa.gov.au//hi/karrakatta-historical-walk-trail-one or visit his memorial at Karrakatta Cemetery along Historical Walk Trail One. Walk Trail maps are available at the front of reception in the main driveway.
