14.01.2022 It is a project some have been waiting their whole lives to see the sealing of Western Australia's last dirt highway. Tarring the dusty stretch of the Goldfields Highway from Wiluna to Meekatharra, deep in the desert scrub, has been promised by all sides of politics many times before. "We've been waiting since about 1957 that's when the rail closed down and then they promised to give Wiluna an all-weather road," Wiluna Shire President Jim Quadrio said. In a collaboratio...n aimed at creating employment for local Indigenous people, the State Government provided $1 million for a pilot program between road work contractors and Wiluna's small training centre. To prepare for the project, students at the Martu-ku Yiwarra Training Centre spent months training to receive the required machinery tickets and knowledge to work on the project. 09.01.2022 Today marked National Sorry Day. But What Does it Mean? On National Sorry Day, we acknowledge and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities The Stolen Generation. Today, we remember those whose lives were forever changed as a result of this trauma. ... Did you know? The first Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998exactly one year after the Bringing Them Home Report was presented to the Parliament. The Bringing Them Home Report was the result of an inquiry into the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, and recommends both an apology to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and reparations. The term Stolen Generations refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who were forcibly removed as children from their families by government, welfare, or church authorities, and placed into institutional care or with non-Indigenous foster families. The forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children began as early as the mid-1800s and continued until the 1970s. We have a long way to go, however today reminds us of our commitment to #reconciliation and our determination to walk together to a better future. #sorryday

09.01.2022 Do you know how to say "hello" in the language of the First Nation you live on? Have you heard someone speak it? If not, that is ok - a chance to start learning and exploring further. A new initiative called the 50 Words project will help you do just that! 50 Words Project is lead by the Research Unit for Indigenous Language at the University of Melbourne. The 50 Words project is an interactive online map giving everyone the opportunity to listen to speakers of multiple Ind...igenous languages across the country, and it’s still growing as we speak. The project first began in July 2019 and there are now over 60 language speakers so far that have contributed to the 50 Words project. The resource is constantly building and adding new words so that it has a complete map of Indigenous Australian languages, and asks that speakers get in contact with them to help achieve even more representation. Check it out here and get your family and kids involved https://50words.online/

07.01.2022 This Thursday 12th November, BREC will be hosting a screening of Adam Goodes’ inspiring film The Final Quarter. For those who haven't seen this powerful film, its a must watch. Adam Goodes was a champion AFL footballer and Indigenous leader. In the final three years of his playing career he became a lightning rod for a heated public debate and widespread media commentary that divided the nation. He publicly called out racism, was named Australian of the Year, was accused of... staging for free kicks, and performed an on-field war dance celebration. The cheers became boos as football crowds turned on him. Using only archival footage aired at the time, the film holds a mirror to Australia and is an opportunity to reconsider what happened on and off the football field. Stick around afterwards and enjoy a sausage sizzle. Tickets are FREE however you must register online at this link http://ow.ly/ubGL50C3syU #NAIDOCWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBeThis
