25.01.2022 Important Reminder: Grading registration and payment is due tomorrow, Friday 27th November. If you have received an email grading invitation or a paper invitation please respond as soon as possible. Registration and payment by the due date is important to ensure certificates and belts arrive before the grading day.

25.01.2022 Please wear your full gi to class today. We are taking photos for the new website. Thanks Matt

25.01.2022 If you're not doing Kobudo, you're not doing Karate. Kobudo is an absolutely essential element of Karate. Sai classes starting 2021. For those who have expressed a desire to focus on one weapon at a time, we understand. This will be a separate class, and proud to say at no extra cost, Your monthly training fee covers Kobudo, sparring, and three classes per week in real karate. Why would you train anywhere else?

24.01.2022 The sooner the pandemic is over the better, but there have been some positives. For those of us out bush far away from capital cities one has been the massive uptake in online events. This morning I enjoyed a seminar with practitioners from all over the world on kata and Sai. The kata seminar by Australia's Reece Cummings Sensei added a great deal of knowledge into how to practice and understand kata. It confirmed we are doing things correctly and added some fantastic new ins...ights which we intend to share with you. Twenty years of training and still learning/feeling like a beginner. Next was Sai taken by Yamil Pecci Sensei in Argentina. My previous school didn't do any Kobudo and I had grown extremely rusty (my bad). This seminar has rekindled my enthusiasm and showed me how to get back on track by going back to basics. Thank you to all. I strongly encourage all students to attend the seminar on November 29. 24.01.2022 If you are considering coming to tomorrow's online seminar (10am) then please just turn up and I'll sort payment ($10) to the organisers after. The recommend age is 12 and over. The first two sessions are suitable for adults and graded students. The last one, which will start around 11am or slightly after, should be suitable for all grades. I do recommend this last session for all as it will complement what we have been doing in class regarding basic techniques having different applications. Matt

23.01.2022 School holidays are a time for getting away from the syllabus, but with a grading looming the adult class still smashed through the kihon to fourth kyu. Then for something different - strangulation applications from Pinan Nidan and "vertical falling", or surviving being slammed against a wall. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed watching you be awesome (Happy birthday, Susan!) Matt

23.01.2022 Some fantastic sparring tonight. Remember to keep your head and let your training flow. A special word up to Super Mum Kirsty who put some gloves on for the first time ever tonight and showed natural defence. You can do this! Everyone can! Tomorrow: Kobudo at 11 and contact sparring at 11:30. You need your own Bo for tomorrow's Kobudo (Moxons okay) and full kit for sparring.

20.01.2022 Now the grading and end of year festivities are over its time to take a break from syllabus work and explore karate in some more depth. Whilst the beginner class focused on Ukemi waza the rest, utilising the methodology of solo, partner and impact work, took to their kata. The intermediate class worked through Pinan Nidan and the advanced/adult class did Pinan Shodan. Hopefully you have a little better understanding of what we are doing and where your training is leading you. Great work, particularly the advanced class who came up with their own effective applications. Matt

20.01.2022 Some photos from our wind up today. Feel free to tag yourselves. Off syllabus classes will continue through to Saturday 19th December.

20.01.2022 We are pleased to announce our website is now live. There's still a bit to finalise and include such as the student portal but you can now access it here: kalgoorliekarate.com.au/ In time this will be integrated with the current phone app and be a resource centre for all your training requirements. We are grateful to and highly recommend Reece Cummings of zencreativesolutions.com.au/ for his amazing work

19.01.2022 Reminder - classes return next Monday, Jan 18

19.01.2022 Really must commend James, Madi and Te Ariki for today's sparring class. It's not often I'm speechless but you guys did it today. The improvement in every aspect is nothing short of sensational. Well done and please keep it up. Matt

18.01.2022 Grading invitations are being sent out via email. Refer the event for details. Please check your contact details are up to date (and update if necessary) via the dojo login app. In order to grade your training fees must be up to date and the $27 grading fee (includes new belt) must be paid by Thursday April 22 as we print grading lists on Friday morning. The payment link is on the grading invitation. If not - please let us know. Thanks all Matt

17.01.2022 The state government has initiated a requirement that the details of anyone in the dojo be recorded. Students simply need to scan their membership card to fulfil this requirement but spectators must also be logged. This begins December 5. As we are pressed for time enough spectators will need to have the "Safe WA" app and scan in on the second device. You can get the app here https://safewa.health.wa.gov.au/ If you wish to be a spectator in class please ensure you are set up... and ready by Dec 5 Thanks for understanding. Matt See more

17.01.2022 Big glove boxing event.

17.01.2022 Next seminar Sunday Nov 29 at the far more realistic time of 10:00 am. Indicate your interest and we'll organise a venue so we can do this together. These are worth it. You'll be trained by some of the best in traditional karate. As always the invitation is extended to all those with an interest in martial arts in Kalgoorlie, especially other karate students who will definitely benefit from this. Let's work together for the common good.

15.01.2022 I strongly believe any karate training should include sparring with a higher degree of contact than standard dojo kumite. Today we ran a trial full contact sparring class with a few keen volunteers and it went extremely well. Thank you for attending. Special thanks to Kru Leah Chapman for lending a hand and coaching. Everyone improved incredibly in one short session. I'm throwing the class open to all graded students. Kru Leah is bringing some of her students to assist and for variety. Saturdays at 11:30. No extra charge but you will need your own equipment. You can source these yourself (please check acceptability) or we can get enough for a bulk order to hopefully reduce cost.

15.01.2022 All Kalgoorlie Sparring day is in full swing. Great to see Kalgoorlie Kickboxing, Phoenixfit Muay Thai, Pacific MMA, Nova Forca Jiu Jitsu, Kalgoorlie ATA Taekwondo, Kofukan Karate and PCYC Boxing join us for a truly awesome day. A massive success

13.01.2022 Thanks to everyone for a great day and a great year. Thanks to Fiona and all involved with the amazing gift - a painted version of a photo of Susan and I sparring circa 2005 (this photo does not do the painting justice) . You won't see me tear up often so let's not mention that part again. Seriously, you are the reason we do this and this was just awesome. Matt

12.01.2022 We are very excited to announce the latest development in our school. You will soon receive an email via the address you put on your application form (please update if changed) with details of how to download the app and your login/password (It will take us a while to add you all). The website will show you many details such as your progress toward your next level, grading history, upcoming events etc (the app not so much) . You will also be able to access videos to assist yo...u in being passed out at each requirement. (Patience please. This is a big job) In class you will be given a card with your details and a bar code. Once fully implemented you will need to scan into each class in order to track your attendance. This app is definitely a work in progress. Features will be added continuously. Looking forward to this new aspect (and no doubt many teething problems) Matt See more

11.01.2022 Congratulations to all our 2020 award winners. Student of the Year: Mithilesh Sathish Kumar... Most Improved: James Fitzpatrick Kaizen Award: Sean Downs Alyssa Smith Alexis King Madilyn Fisher Fiona Thomson

07.01.2022 Places are now available for our junior beginners trial program, but filling very fast. If you missed out last term we will contact you. Why a trial program? Because you need to give it a decent go and over two weeks you can experience more of what we offer than you would after one trial class. Adults and select juniors can, in addition to normal training, try out the kobudo (weaponry) and sparring classes. Twenty bucks gets you two weeks training, a club t-shirt so you look the part, and a free uniform on registration. KKA. Kalgoorlie's premier karate school. https://kalgoorliekarate.com.au/getstarted/

07.01.2022 [EDIT session times corrected] Next seminar May 16. Starting at 7am WST. Only first two sessions will be streamed unfortunately. Recommend the kobudo class seriously consider the first one. Bojutsu isn't something you should do in your lounge (trust me on this) so if we can get a few we'll book the dojo. Note it says "partner drills" so if someone can commit to this I would appreciate it. Susan always seems to be working on seminar days. 0700-0830 Bojutsu and partner drills.... I may have spare equipment 0830- 10:00. Annako kata and applications. This is a Shito-ryu kata so Kofukan students may find this interesting. You are certainly invited. Do please message me. If registering please pay the non member "online" fee or bring $15 on the day. The presenter definitely interacts with you, it isn't just a video class See more

06.01.2022 Ladies. You probably think the karate community is a boys club. You've possibly heard stories of male instructors demeaning females and that's scared you off having a go? We are proud to have Susan Edwards, female black belt instructor and co-owner of the school, to ease your concerns. Our senior classes have many ladies training and we put this down to our determination to have respect for our students. We also remember the first time we walked into a dojo and how intimidating that can be. Sign up for a trial and change your life. Both ladies and gents, come and try our kobudo weaponry and full contact sparring classes (both completely optional at no extra cost). Realistic self defence in a traditional karate environment. https://kalgoorliekarate.com.au/getstarted/

04.01.2022 Late notice, but Kalgoorlie Kickboxing will be hosting a seminar on kata at 4pm today and also at 9:30am tomorrow. Usually for seminars is doesn't matter that the kata is different, or even if you know it at all. It's about seeing the application in the technique I will be at today's. https://www.facebook.com/351442095834/posts/10158067823650835/

03.01.2022 This is absolutely correct up to the sixty second mark. Then, oh dear. We should run a "spot what's wrong with this scenario" quiz. You can get more money, another watch, you can't get a bullet out of your head.

03.01.2022 Reminder of seminar on sunday November 29 at ten am Register here for $,10, select member dojo https://www.trybooking.com/BMTJM

02.01.2022 This Saturday we hope to start the full contact sparring classes. You must have the following: Head guard Mouth guard Shin/instep protectors (not the cotton type)... Chest guard (e.g. Taekwondo style, others acceptable). Boxing style gloves (14-16oz or equivalent) Groin guard highly recommended. I'll have some gear we brought back in class today if people are keen Matt See more

02.01.2022 The student portal on the website is now available. Use your app login and password to access. If you've forgotten just post here and we'll forward to you. This area will grow with time as we redo our videos (the ones filmed in my garage during lockdown for instance) and see what other features we can add. Feedback, comments welcome Matt

02.01.2022 (Holiday interlude post) Full season three now streaming! #TeamCobraKai

01.01.2022 Please note no classes Friday and Saturday as I have to go see a Perth doctor on Friday. Adults are welcome to attend the intermediate kids class on Wednesday.
