24.01.2022 Another planning meeting today, yay love meetings! It is great though that this thing is progressing. We will be looking at creating specific roles in the team, there is much to do. We need to start to get a handle on level of interest for this event. If you are reading this please let e know if you have no interest in participating, are considering it and will decide later or are actually thinking about coming. I realise that for some the decision may depend on what you see being offered as planning unfolds. If you can message or email me that would be great. [email protected] 0459197190. Happy to answer any questions.

19.01.2022 Did 2 22km runs in 24 hrs, second one this morning. Seems only a few weeks ago, months in reality, I was struggling to do 5 km. I encourage fellow plodders, just keep getting out there. I have an $80 pair of shoes I got on sale, my son thinks they are running shoes only in that any shoe you run in can be called a running shoe. I have with me one pair of running shorts and 2 singles, one I have had for years. My luxury item is a camel back pack my kids bought me years ago. I recently realised there are free running aps which tell you want you want. Distance, pace, calories burned. Not much else will give as many benefits as running does at so little cost. Keep going and please share your plodding journey.

18.01.2022 Got out to 12km last night. Oh the heat! It will be a full moon 2 nights before the run so should still be good light on the night. I find running out here under a full moon very cool.

18.01.2022 26 June 2021. The day of the inaugural ultra marathon between Lajamanu and Kalkarindji in the Northern Territory Australia. 112km of relatively flat course on dirt rd. Kalkarindji has a strong history of aboriginal land rights, arguably the birth place of aboriginal land rights after prime minister Whitlam famously made the symbolic g esture of pouring dirt into the hands of an aboriginal leader, Vincent Lingiari. Check in on this page to follow the progress of the planning ...and to make suggestions along the way. I have run this route myself as someone who previously had run the same marathon 9 times over a 15 year period and wanted to at least once do an ultra distance. Whether you are an avid distance runner or, like me, thinking about at least once taking on a bigger challenge, to tick the box, this run might be for you This area, belonging to the Gurindji people, has rich culture and history which you would, over the weekend, be able get unique insights into. You could take more time and experience some of the wonders the Northern Territory has to offer. See more

11.01.2022 I have gone dead quiet for about 3 weeks because I have gone into procrastination mode again. The organising group decided that we should take a big step back and not do a public event next year. It will be done at some stage in the next few years and I have learnt some lessons about forming a team that will be invaluable. To say I was gutted might be an understatement but I cannot do it on my own so have accepted the decision. I will still be doing the run myself next year a...nd anyone who wants to is welcome to join me. I will have a small support team and am happy to share resources where I can. So instead of being a planned supported public event it is now a group of like minded people getting together for a run. Times can still be kept, support provided, local attractions enjoyed but without the cool stuff that can be provided with sponsorship and grant dollars. A great time will still be had. This page will continue and a site developed. Let me know your thoughts. See more

11.01.2022 At the planning meeting yesterday our group of planners has grown to 8. Not a fan of big committees but it is becoming rapidly clearer how big a job this is to do it well . Each person bring a good set of skills and networks which the rest of us don't have. We are getting into the governance matters and with multiple things on the boil for funding, planning (time lines, budget spread sheet, sponsorships, ettc it is obvious we need to grow the team. Those on board are committ...ed and enthused. There is a growing local and wider community awareness of the event. We may have to rethink the name as it already has wide usage by non sporting companies. Will let you know on that one. AURA are being supportive, thanks guys. My training I am up to 16km. Did it last night in the rain which was quite pleasant out here. Did not need water to combat the dehydration even over that distance. The thighs are a bit sore today but I will be up to completing the marathon in May. Might not feel like sharing the time but will complete. Have to, have paid the money! For those of you who are training and are plodders like me keep the distances challenging but not so much you hate it to the point of giving up, don't worry about your times, that will, reward yourself when you get out there. For me it is a bunderberg ginger in my fridge I can only have when I have done at least a 10 km run. You will know what will work for you. Thanks for reading. Please share far and wide. I have sent the link to one person in America. Please let me know if you are even thinking about coming. We need to get an idea of level of interest for grant applications and sponsorship requests. If you have queries and want to speak to someone you can call me at 0459197190. Oh yeah we are starting a web site development. Will let you know when that is up and running.

05.01.2022 Any suggestions re a running light powerful enough to show depth of corrugations in dirt road at night and with a long battery life?

01.01.2022 As I am new to organising anything like this I will appreciate any suggestions, questions, insights etc from those more seasoned than I either in the actual running, as in participating, or organising. I would like to know what you would expect if you were to come to this event. What would make it more likely that you would come and take part? We will be making use of the culture and geography of the town and surrounds to offer a unique experience. What support would you expect during the event?

01.01.2022 For those who may get to see this page and who are not distance runners but may be wanna be. Tonight I have done my 2nd 10k run for the day and it nearly killed me. Walked a lot of it though managed 7.4 min/k time in 37.4 degree heat. This mornings was quicker but I can't run tomorrow. Not long ago I restarted running and was doing 5 k runs and I am doing a marathon in May and will keep going in prep for the Red dirt ultra. That is how I got ready for it the first time I did ...it on my own. I really want to encourage others like me that an ultra is for you if you have ever thought it would be cool to do one. I do one marathon, the same one, every year or so because when I was a kid I used to watch the runners in this marathon go through my town and think how amazing to be able to do that but it would never be for me as it was beyond me. I now know that to not be true and so moved on to do an ultra distance. I am a very average person in many ways and if I can do it so can you. I would suggest if you are just starting out to initially run for time. Decide how long you are going to run for and stick to it. Be realistic. You will gradually increase the amount of time you spend running. Even if you can't run the whole time walk run. You will gradually find that you walk less and run more and when you are running the whole time extend the time gradually. If you start to hate it you are pushing too hard and you will give up. Why not share you journeys here as well. See more
