18.01.2022 For all my little mates out there, that find fireworks super scary, here are a few tips for the humans to help you. Humans please: 1. Be informed about when the fireworks are on; 2. Be prepared, implement your firework amelioration action plan at least 1 hour ahead of schedule. This means you get tasty bribes, stuffed Kongs, raw whole bones, calming medication ready and delivered to your furry companion;... 3. Use your diffuser to deliver quality essential oils (1-2 drops of frankincense or lavender); 4. Close curtains; 5. Pop on the television (avoid the live telecasting of fireworks, unless you watch it on mute!); 6. Sit together and chill with your fur baby. And lastly a little Tolstoy "the two most powerful warriors are patience and time". The fireworks will end, and you will be in one piece.
18.01.2022 Heres another of our Kalmpets coaches offering dog walks and home visits.
18.01.2022 Good morning! I had a question over the weekend from a client and it has prompted me to share a little knowledge on essential oil Copaiba. In short, this oil is a powerhouse for our furbabies since it has barely any scent or flavour so no-ones nose can get out of joint. The power is that it is one of the highest anti-inflammatory oils. It is also safe to use in combination with your furbabies regular medication. Key uses are for sore joints (arthritis), yucky teeth (stomatit...is/gingivitis), itchy skin, tummy issues, pain, urinary disorders and the list goes on. Dogs: mix 1 part copaiba oil to three parts of carrier oil (coconut oil) and give 1-2 drops per 9kg twice daily either in food or straight down the little red lane. Cats: put one drop in the palm of your hands, rub your hands together and pat your cat! Your feline friend will ingest as they groom.
17.01.2022 Did you know your dog has a population of no less than a trillion little friends on the inside? You can be their friend too and in return, they will help your furbaby live longer, happier and healthier!

11.01.2022 There is nothing better than spying on your pet!. This study monitored 900 cats from around the globe and revealed their secret life. The result is disappointing, to say the least, and suggests that Ozzie cats are the laziest! Apparently without the need to hunt and find a mate motivation to explore (or in fact just move) is lacking. Herein lies the reason that our cats are turning into lemons on toothpicks! Today, I will start an Ozzie cat exercise initiative......over the course of the year, I will provide ideas for cat-er-cise to turn your couch potato into a fit-n-chiselled feline. Lets get meow-ving!
11.01.2022 An inevitable consequence as we bunk-in will be an increase in the time our human and fur-children will spend together. The fur people may have their limits tested! There are some really terrific resources available to help your kids be respectful of the furries and keep the peace at home. I will share some of my favourite resources in the coming weeks as well as some fun activities for your kids to do with the furries. To get you started please get the family together and take a look at one of my all-time favourite education videos.
10.01.2022 And in not coronavirus news here is Cat-er-cise idea #1 Cat agility. Heres how its done!
10.01.2022 I have been busy searching high and low for a replacement school for my Kalmpets daycare family. I have taken a goldilocks approach, only the best will do for my furry family, friends and their humans! I have been out to PawPals DayCare - Malaga this week and met with Laura and her team as well as some of the fur-people. There is good and great news......The good news is that I can recommend Laura and her team for the care of our furbabies and the great news is that she has ...offered 50% of the first 4 visits for Kalmpets Kids! If Malaga isnt nearby there is a second centre PawPals DayCare & Parlour - Bassendean I hope the furry-people enjoy it as much as I did!

06.01.2022 Its been a year since I sat down with Dr Howard from PAW by Blackmores to chat about some of my favourite topics...brains, behaviour and nutrition. Dr Howard and her clever team put our discussion together in a neat little podcast. Topics of discussion include: * The importance of recognising canine cognitive dysfunction as a true neurological condition and treating it as such; * Diagnosing mental illnesses in dogs, including anxiety, sleep disorders, attention deficit disor...ders and autism using knowledge of distinct behavioural patterns and taking an individualised approach; * Do dogs suffer from depression and post traumatic stress disorder? *Neurotransmitters involved in mental illnesses, including serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline *Kates most reached for supplements for brain health *Nutritional psychiatry and Kates professional beliefs about the best diet for brain health *The gut-brain axis and the importance of the microbiome *Serotonin syndrome- what are the risks? https://omny.fm//an-integrative-approach-to-behaviour-case

05.01.2022 A little something I collaborated on with my friends at Dogs Refuge Home on a topic I am very passionate about.
04.01.2022 Just a few factually accurate and important points to set the record straight about the coronavirus and our furbabies: 1. The canine coronavirus outbreak in greyhounds in several Australian states is a clearly different virus to the one causing human disease (COVID-19). The canine coronavirus is old news and has been in dog populations in Australia for a few years, especially where dogs are kenneled for long periods; 2. While the epidemiology (the what, why, how and wherefor...es of the virus) of COVID-19 is still unclear current evidence supports that the virus has an animal source. Genetic tests revealed the viruss closest relative is a virus found in the Horseshoe Bat. The investigation is ongoing to identify just how the virus made the leap from Bat to human. It remains possible that another animal (intermediate host) provided a means of transport. 2. The current spread of COVID-19 is the result of the virus being transferred from human-to-human; 3. There is currently no evidence that dogs (or any other companion animal) can spread the disease; 4. The National Veterinary Services of Hong Kong reported on the 1st of March to OIE evidence that a dog had tested positive to the COVID-19 virus following close contact with its owners who were sick with COVID-19. The dog has yet to show any signs of being unwell and is being well cared for; 5. There is no evidence to support that dogs play a role in the spread of COVID-19 or that they become sick with this virus. My advice is, when the time comes, keep up with the handwashing and dont let people touch/sneeze or cough on your furbaby (lets face it....its what they prefer anyway!). Please also see the comprehensive OIE Q & A page. https://www.oie.int//questions-and-answers-on-2019novel-/

02.01.2022 Want to use essential oils for your dog but dont know how or youre worried about safety? The key is in the quality of the oil and the quantity you use. Dogs can smell one drop of blood in a volume of water the size of two Olympic swimming pools! In brief....diffuse, use carriers like coconut oil and use paediatric doses. My favourite oils are Dottera, but there are many other high quality oils out there. I use them everyday in many ways for my non-human and human children.... There are many application for these little bottles of magic. Want to know more? Check out ADR II Essential oils for Companion Animals by Melissa Shelton. What Dr Melissa doesnt know about the oils isnt worth knowing!
