25.01.2022 Towering over all other rainforest frogs in his domain is this large Fleay's barred frog (Mixophyes fleayi) from the misty forests of southeastern Queensland and adjacent NSW. If you were a spider or an insect this is one beast you wouldn't want to see!
24.01.2022 Sometimes it's the little things. This orange blossom orchid finally opened! I had been watching it at Mt Glorious for about two months. Really nice flower.
24.01.2022 Well, I returned to Brisbane last night after a very busy, action packed week and a bit filming a cinematic styled marketing campaign for a small business undergoing major rebranding! Who is it? I can't say just yet but they are super happy with the results. The films will air on the 1st of September. Stay tuned!
22.01.2022 The Ravine orchid (Sarcochilus fitzgeraldii) is a rare species found in moist rocky gorges in Northern NSW and southeastern QLD, Australia. They are absolutely spectacular and flower all at once. Unfortunately they are often targeted by poachers, which is why this location will remain a secret. Thanks to Isaac Wishart for showing me there today.
22.01.2022 Check out Kaluta's first VLOG with Wildside Sportfishing at South West Rocks. I wanted to see some whales and try for some photos, but we ended up doing a whole lot more! Head to out Wildside Sportfishing's site www.wildsidesportfishing.com. https://youtu.be/19u5cU8dcqY
21.01.2022 In Australia's extreme west live a remarkable blind fish that dwells in limestone cave systems below the desert. Here is a little bit about Milyeringa veritas - the blind gudgeon.
20.01.2022 Today Kaluta had the pleasure of filming for Endemol Shine Australia on their Ambulance series. The story we filmed will be in Season 3, coming up in about 3 months. Everything went as smoothly as expected and the client is happy with the results. Kaluta has a focus on efficiency. The results were delivered to the Client before we left site. The other part of the Kaluta difference are the extra things we do for the most important people - the clients.... Contact Kaluta today for your Brisbane based drone needs!

18.01.2022 Now that the streams have dried up early at Mt Glorious in SEQ, I'm guessing there won't be many opportunities to get photos like this of feeding Myotis bats until the next big rains... Myotis macropus is the only fishing bat we have in Australia. These ones are feeding on moths trapped on the water's surface. These shots were incredibly difficult to get, using a home made electronic control box, infrared beam and high speed flashes.
18.01.2022 Southeastern Queensland and Northern NSW have an unusual habitat type - wallum. It's a sandy habitat that is heavily influenced by plants of the Proteaceae family, especially Banksias and Grevilleas. Despite the sand, lakes and swamps are fairly common- but there's a catch. The waters are usually acidic. Frogs especially don't like that, but nature finds a way. So, there are a small number of "acid frogs" from a couple of unrelated families - all adapted to these conditions. This is the Cooloola sedge frog, one of those species. It was a pleasure seeing them again at Lake Poona while I was out looking for orchids. I'm very familiar with these frogs and their habitat requirements, but it's always a treat to see them!

17.01.2022 Borneo memories. Phil Lewis handles the moth with the largest wing area in the world. This one had just emerged and not fully inflated the wings. Very cool.
16.01.2022 Who's ready to build a sand dune? Digital grain by digital grain. Working on imagery captured of the Carlo Sandblow.
16.01.2022 Same species, same location. These are all variants of the white bellied mangrove snake (Fordonia leucobalia) from Darwin, Australia. This snake is a crab specialist, pinning their prey to the mud and twisting the legs off first and eating them, sometimes finishing the legless body afterwards. They are super docile and don't seem to bite at all. The worst part of looking for these is dealing with the biting insects in the mangrove habitat they dwell in!
13.01.2022 Love me some orchids. This is a tree spider orchid I found yesterday in the Gold Coast hinterland. It was flowering out of season and I was happy to see it for sure! The species name of this species - tetragonum means "four corners" because the stem is square in cross section up near the leaves. What a cool flower and a treat to see. In other news, the rainforest was crunchy dry and heavily smoke hazed from nearby fires. Very worried about the survival of the forest between now and the next big rain...
13.01.2022 What could be cuter than a Dasykaluta? Here's my story on how I met them and why I think they are so cool. https://www.kaluta.com.au//what-could-be-cuter-than-a-fuzz
13.01.2022 A spot of herping tonight with Mark turned up some old favourites plus a new species for me. The golden crowned snake, though common has basically eluded me for years! This neat little individual was quite happy to rear up and put on a show. These nocturnal, barely venomous relatives of cobras inhabit wet and damp areas, feeding mostly on skinks and frogs. The yellow fellow is a Tyler's tree frog. These guys have a stuttering, chuckling call and males like this one are ofte...n yellow at night but brown to grey when not breeding. The brown frog with the massive bulging muscles on the head is a tusked frog. Often mistaken for a cane toad, the tusked frog is Australia's only frog with well developed odontoids - large "teeth" in the bottom jaw that look like tusks. Many unrelated frogs overseas have these and it's likely they are used in male combat. Males call while semi submerged in water with a double chicken-like "cluck".
12.01.2022 A look at Australia's four archerfish species. These fish have the remarkable ability to squirt a jet of water from their mouths to knock prey down from overhanging twigs and branches - even accounting for refraction at the same time! A large and experienced individual can shoot with exceptional accuracy to around 5 feet, with a total distance of up to well over 6 feet! I did have images of them shooting but decided to delete them as an excuse to set up another tank and get fresh shots. Descriptions for each species is with each image. Remember I have an online stock library for you to get images for either printing or use in your projects. Head to http://www.kaluta.zenfolio.com/
11.01.2022 Yesterday was a big day with a 4am start and a drone flight to gather a 40 image panorama just after sunrise. So we headed out to Noosa to get this image of the National Park all the way to Cooloola in one sweeping panorama! It worked extremely well, though it was rather a grey day overall. We talked with local businesses and handed out our fliers with a download card to access a free copy (for Noosa residents only) of the panorama for personal or small business web use.... It was a great day and we look forward to working with Noosa businesses in the near future! Where to next?
11.01.2022 Almost as big in diameter but certainly longer in length in comparison to the Atlas Moth of Borneo is the Australian Hercules Moth. These are massive and the adults do not feed. Once they emerge from the cocoon, it's find-a-mate-and-die time. These look like birds when they flutter around. You'll find them from Innisfail to about Cooktown.
10.01.2022 Re-uploaded my Lyrebird video. Love these things https://youtu.be/U4Up0Ekt6dM.
10.01.2022 Not something you see every day - this is an albino great barred frog (Mixophyes fasciolatus) from near Brisbane. What a strange find!
09.01.2022 Looks like some great changes are in the pipeline for Kaluta. Can't say what they are, but I'll let you know in due course!Looks like some great changes are in the pipeline for Kaluta. Can't say what they are, but I'll let you know in due course!
09.01.2022 Got the signage made! Another layer of safety and communication on site!
08.01.2022 https://youtu.be/k0affz7VUPE Join Joe and Chelsea for about two minutes as they discuss their story. Theirs is a tale of fresh beginnings in the picturesque Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia where they are sharing their love of the area by creating experiences for clients of all ages.... You'll no doubt see why they love to do what they do. We had a great time filming this and sharing their story. How can we help you?
08.01.2022 Koala rescue - the job that shouldn't be needed but is essential. I've signed up as a volunteer. Apparently the QLD government does not like rescuers posting any koala images... no idea why.
08.01.2022 With the belting down summer rains it might be an idea to go looking for these - this is a green thighed frog (Nyctimystes brevipalmata) from northern NSW. A frog that is (apparently) hard to find except when breeding, I found this one and two others in less than five minutes of searching by spotlight in some eucalypt forest near Newcastle. I like them in the non breeding colour but they do look pretty cool when the males turn bright yellow while in breeding mode!

07.01.2022 Really nice to see this koala by the roadside at Gympie yesterday. Never tire of seeing these, especially since they have suffered some big declines in the wild from roadkill, dogs, fire and loss of habitat from clearing, invasive bush killing fungi and disease such as chlamydia. How much longer will we be able to see these in the wild?
07.01.2022 A nice piece of new information has come up. I have discovered that the free mapping software Avenza allows for the download and integration of my drone maps! So you can have your mapped area on your phone to walk around and geotag or measure as soon as the map is complete! It's a fantastic outcome so you don't have to rely on aged, low resolution satellite imagery and can instead have a fresh, new, relevant map to use on your device immediately! This is great news. Ask how we can help you!
06.01.2022 How nice are these fairy bells? (Sarchochilius eriochilus) These were growing on a boulder on the edge of rainforest on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The flowers are tiny, the total height of the closeup photo is 35mm. They don't have a smell I could detect and they are very hard to spot in dappled light. Worth looking for on rainforest boulders as there aren't too many orchids in flower at the moment.
05.01.2022 Not as showy as the ravine orchid is the very common but easily overlooked tangleroot orchid. These grow on twigs in the rainforest and have tiny white or green flowers that only open for a day or two. Very happy to have seen these.
04.01.2022 Way back in 2007 I went to West Papua, the Indonesian side of the island of New Guinea. This was one of the coolest snakes I managed to find - a D'Albert's python. What a spectacular snake!
04.01.2022 A new day, two orchids I haven't seen since the 1990s. The thumb orchid (Dockrilla linguiformis) has a weird leaf that looks like a tongue - hence the scientific name "linguiformis". They grow on sandstone cliffs and boulders. Although common I hadn't been in the areas they grow for a long time and it was great to see them again! The pink rock orchid (Thelychiton kingianus) is spectacular in season, growing vigorously over cliffs and rocks to the point that they turn pink with flowers during peak flowering season. We had come at the very end of flowering so there were very few out. Still good to see. Many thanks to Jason Sulda for showing me.
01.01.2022 Hey everyone, Kaluta loves drones and creating cinematic experiences! Check out the show reel of drone work and see what you think! Delivered in stunning 4K! https://youtu.be/ajgrQQfb5Qw
01.01.2022 Never work with animals and children they say! Tried to get some camera trap images of a Pine Marten in Germany last week. These much larger cousins of weasels and ferrets are the rarer of the Martens in Europe, filling the same niche as the Spot Tailed Quoll in Australia. This guy came to the camera set a few times and this is all I got! Ah well, maybe next time!... I'm back in Australia again and ready to assist you with your ecological surveying, drone works and more! Don't be afraid to give me a call or drop me a line, Cheers and happy new year!
01.01.2022 A rarely seen snake is the northern shovel nose (Brachyurophis roperi) which lives in Australia's Top End. They are harmless and feed on lizard eggs they find in the soil and leaf litter.
