25.01.2022 Weed mat. A recent job reminded me to remind everyone not to use weed mat when you're creating a garden. It provides a very short term benefit in the form of weed suppression, but a long term nightmare. Whatever you put over the top of it as mulch or soil, weeds will grow in anyhow. Weed seed gets blown in by the wind or deposited in bird droppings, and spreads quickly. If the material is porous, weed roots will grow into it and become even harder to pull out than normal. If... the material is non-porous like thick black plastic, air and oxygen won't get through, sending the layer of soil below sterile. And weeds will still grow in the medium above. So just don't. Or use something that will break down relatively quickly like wet newspaper or cardboard. Put that junk mail to good use, or use no barrier at all and pull weeds as you see them emerge. I reckon the person who first came up with the saying that a stitch in time saves nine was a gardener talking about weeding. Happy spring gardening . See more

20.01.2022 Not the most colourful flowers but certainly one of the more intriguing. Homoranthus darwinoides.

14.01.2022 Got the mesh up that will support the grapevine over the warmer months. Gate frame has been concreted in so leaving it sit to harden for 2 weeks. This will eventually become the public entry for the native plant sale side of the business.

13.01.2022 With rain and cooler temps ahead for the next few days, it's the perfect time to get some slow release fertiliser down if you haven't done it already, and to get out in the early mornings to catch the snails and slugs as they munch on the fleshier leafed plants. These I caught on tulip leaves, Kniphofia (red hot poker) and native saltbush. And get ready to mulch after the rain to trap that water in the ground. With these relatively easy jobs done, it'll be a good weekend to spend dry indoors, watching your favourite footy grand final .

13.01.2022 Some of the new additions that will be on sale shortly.

09.01.2022 A few of the native Lechenaultias flowering at the moment are the gold El Dorado, the stunning blue biloba (possibly a variety known as Brooklyn), and the hybrid Rhapsody. The prolific flowering mauve L floribunda is taking a rest.

07.01.2022 As I get deeper into my formal studies on garden design I come across some truly inspiring examples, including this one by Cuban/American designer Jorge Sanchez, constructed in Scarsdale, New York. Photograph by Andre Baranowski.

07.01.2022 Currently not taking on any new customers, to focus on further developing the native plants supply side of the business. I've recently registered the business name Southside Natives to better reflect this aspect, and will soon be advertising under this name.

06.01.2022 Myoporum floribundum. You may know its popular ground cover cousin Myoporum parvifolium that comes in a fine leafed form and a broad leafed form. But this one grows to be a tallish shrub of around 4 metres and has gorgeous pendulous leaves with clustered white flowers growing all along the top side of the branches. I have about 20 of these in stock, including advanced specimens, but when they're in flower like now, I feel like keeping them all to myself .

06.01.2022 Excited to be nearing completion on the second glass house and looking forward to the additional space for plants. All the glass is from second hand windows and doors salvaged from work sites. The added space will also enable greater flexibility in acclimatising young plants to local conditions. Come spring and summer I'll have the usual reliable varieties plus some exciting new additions that include Westringia Glabra Cadabra and Blue Gem (which is actually a stunning purple), Isopogon Pink Drumsticks, Lemon beauty heads, red, yellow and pink kangaroo paws, Lechenaultia biloba (blue) and red, black and yellow gastrolobiums. Photos of some of those to follow.

03.01.2022 Advanced native plants for sale now include purple hop bush Dodonea viscosa purpurea, Astartea fascicularis, Philoteca profusion, Westringia Blue, the spectacular Myoporum floribundum, Austromyrtus Copper Tops, Phebalium squamulosum, Grevillea Scarlet Sprite, Melaleuca fulgens Apricot and Leptospermum Burgundy. Prices range from $15 to $25 making them some of best priced in town. EFTPOS available. Located in the northern end of Kambah. Please reply to arrange a no-obligation viewing.

02.01.2022 First Spring sale of the year for a wide variety of native plants - this Saturday 5th September from 9am to 1pm. Address is 26 Battersby Circuit, Kambah. Something for everyone. Prices range from $10 upwards with EFTPOS available. No holds sorry.

01.01.2022 This is very concerning for Canberra - a significant weed introduced in imported turf. Please circulate if you know friends who have or plan to lay turf. https://citynews.com.au/2014/beware-madagascan-fireweed/
