25.01.2022 Coopetition. This is a word we heard recently and we love it. It means cooperative competition and is such a great word to describe what can happen, especially in small communities, when rather than everyone fighting over the same piece of pie everyone just works to make the pie bigger. Businesses complement one another rather than compete. So how about this for an idea, at this weekend’s Sunday Session we’re going to have a small community market, we’ve got a few stalls li...ned up including Karl Venz with his guitars and John Tidy with his organic avos and honey, Lyn’s coming with Enjo supplies and you can find out more about Yoga with Sam. Harley of course will be in attendance with choc chip cookies and maybe some of Grandma’s crafts. We’re working on a kids craft tent too. In the lead up to XMAS why not come along on Sunday from midday and support a range of small local businesses, artisans and farmers all in the one spot! Live music from Junction Road will keep your toes tapping. If you’ve got something to sell then please get in contact as the more the merrier! If it’s a goer we will look at doing the mini market with every Sunday Session!

23.01.2022 FROM THE GROUND UP held last Friday at the store was attended by over 100 from across Qld. Great speakers and even some machinery demos through lunch. At this unique soil health workshop it was really heartening to see how many people want to learn as much as they can about soil and the processes that can reverse desertification, re hydrate land and turn dirt back to soil. The day started with Colin Johnson from Earthlife Rock Minerals who discussed the roll of minerals in s...oil and plant health. His journey as a horticulturalist really started when he began questioning the research behind NPK accepted agronomy and found the entire basis of what are essential nutrients came from pre-war research done in a lab without soil! There was no allowance for the complex interrelationships that take place between microbes and minerals. This science continues today without regard for soil life. This finding was reinforced later in the day by microbiologist and ex biochemistry lecturer Dave Cohen. Dave delved deeper into the biology that is taking place as plants take up & move nutrients and how chemistry that is taught in schools and universities is not accurately depicting what happens in this process. When more complex biological process are overlooked (or disregarded) there are unintended consequences for soils, plants and through the food chain. Bland, tasteless and nutrient deficient foods. John Moor from Grow Moor spoke about mimicking nature and the steps required in preparing your land (and your mind) to increase animal densities as animals in any farming system (as in nature) play an essential role cycling nutrients. As Alan Savory’s neighbour in SA, John has extensive experience on his own large dairy operation and works as a consultant (though he hates that word) across Qld. John is somewhat of a cover crop guru and uses these as one of his tools in bringing soil back to life and rehydrating landscapes. Holding water in soils (not in dams), John suggested, puts agriculture in direct conflict with urban dwellers who rely on poor water infiltration in large dam catchments for their supply. An interesting point! Finally our own Victoria Kane, practicing nutritionist and local farmer talked about the link between soil health and human health and how she’s realised she can have more of an impact on human health as a farmer than as a nutritionist. Victoria’s talk was riveting and bought all the speakers information into context. We finished the day with a machinery display planting cover crop seed with a Yeomans plough and spraying out microbial brews and micronised lime (by some great local contractors- thanks Gilldora Grove). We’ve only just scratched the surface on this topic so watch this space for future workshops. And a plug.... it’s a great time for getting your cover crop in so talk to us about multi species seed mixes. https://www.bosrural.com.au/summer-cover-crop-mix
