21.01.2022 Very exciting to see the White Home taking shape on site. This photo taken last week with the slab down, walls set-out and one frame lifted. This week the wall frames should be complete.

20.01.2022 Timberlodge, Marysville. Lower Ground floor structure mostly done. Awaiting floor beams to progress. Autumn in the hills. Phoenix is trying to rise but winter is coming... it’s a race against the elements to get the roof on now. @ Marysville, Victoria

20.01.2022 Exciting week for K+AR. Big-time demolition at the Bull home in Malvern and Aylward home in Arthur's Seat!

20.01.2022 Preliminary rendings of a proposed extension under an existing house to reconnect the living space to the garden on the sloping site.

17.01.2022 We've started work on another new project, the renovation of Victorian weatherboard home on Mont Albert Rd, Surrey Hills. This one will surprise.

15.01.2022 Another project very nearly complete. Hats off to the young owner builders who have brought their Surrey Hills Home to life. For more photos and info visit our website. www.kandar.com.au

14.01.2022 Episode 4 in ‘How to build a serious basement’: Shotcrete walls - set up guides to get the walls plumb then spray waterproof, sticky concrete onto the soil, piles and reinforcement. Scrape the concrete with a straight edge to get it true, create vertical grooves called ‘tooled joints’ to force a shrinkage crack at a controlled point, trowel smooth then voila! Retention done. Next step: in-ground drainage, detailed excavation for basement footings and slab. Stay tuned for episode 5 due mid January. @ Balwyn, Victoria

13.01.2022 Jan Juc Townhouse development update: First floor framing is complete on the northern townhouse; ground floor framing complete on the south. Nice to see it taking shape!

12.01.2022 Some great progress on site in Arthurs Seat. Slab down, framing up. Great to see it taking shape.

12.01.2022 Step 2 in how to make a serious basement: bend and tie steel reinforcement to the pile starter bars, build formwork to back and top of capping beam, spray concrete into form leaving enough reinforcement and space for pouring of the main slab and band beams, strip formwork. Next step: dig a big hole! @ Balwyn, Victoria

12.01.2022 Stay tuned for the next few weeks to learn how basements are made. First step, ‘bored piers’: drill the holes, place the reinforcement cages, pour concrete in the holes. Next step, ‘capping beams’.

11.01.2022 Marysville. Almost locked up. More photos to come.

10.01.2022 Progress on site

09.01.2022 As The Phoenix emerges after Easter, as it dares to get up out of the ground, industry wide material shortages stunt its growth. Progress is slow but it’s form is being felt.

07.01.2022 Episode 3 in how to build a serious basement: Hole has been dug and spoil taken away. Now you can clearly see the soldier piles/bored piers with the capping beam on top. This is what prevents the soil from caving in. Strip drains are in, waiting to be connected to the drainage system. Steel reinforcement ‘fabric’ has been placed in between and over the face of the piles, ready for the next step: shotcrete (concrete, sprayed onto the face of the dirt and over the piles). After being troweled vertically, this will be the finished face of the capping beam and retention system. @ Balwyn, Victoria

07.01.2022 After over 3 years of planning, Marysville House rebuild to break ground at end of October. Expected completion in May. Will be so good to get back up there.

07.01.2022 Next instalment in how to build a big basement! Retention and bulk excavation are done. Now is the time for services to be laid in ground and detailed excavation done for the basement slab. Here you will see pipes laid for sewer and stormwater drainage and trench dug ready for the basement slab. After this will come the polythene layer to water proof the slab, steel reinforcement mesh in the slab and ribs to add tensile strength and hydronic heating coils before the pour.

06.01.2022 Episode 7 in how to build a basement. Formwork and penetrations for services have been set up. All the formwork is propped from the basement slab, holding it up until the concrete cures. That’s it really- build a temporary ‘negative’ of a building, pour concrete into it, then take it down. Concrete is awesome. It can do almost anything you ask of it - forming the shapes of your mind. But making the forms to pour it into - now that is the temporary art that no one appreciates in the process. It’s a lot of work, but it’s also worth it and almost nothing else can do it. @ Balwyn, Victoria

06.01.2022 New project confirmed! Townhouse in Collier Crescent, Brunswick.

06.01.2022 Alterations and Additions to existing 3BR 1930s Art Deco Home. Completion due Dec 2012 With an immovable deadline, this commission was accepted with an extremely tight timeframe for design and documentation. K+AR put just about everything else on hold to complete Schematic Design in a week, Detailed Design in 3 weeks and Building Permit Documentation in 4 weeks. This is not something that should be repeated, but the Whites, expecting their first baby later in the year needed ...an exceptional timeframe from both architect and builder. Work commenced on site mid-July with a 20-week construction period. Just in case, K+AR devised a plan which could cope with the potential delays that often come with construction and especially, alterations and addition projects: The new works provided for the works to be staged, where the Whites could occupy the original home during construction, with minimal disruption. Upon completion of the new works, the client could decant into the new living area, complete with master suite and separate entry. Modification to the original building could then be completed and handed over. See more

02.01.2022 Building permit in hand for the White Home in Ashwood! Building gets underway tomorrow & completed in 20 weeks... Just in time for their other new addition - or so we hope!

02.01.2022 Episode 6 in how to build a serious basement: lay polythene to waterproof the slab. Lay reinforcement, top and bottom, hydronic coils wired to mesh where heated. ‘Box’ the upstands and rebates. Pour the concrete to the levels needed. Start the blockwork to support the ground floor. Stay tuned.

01.01.2022 Builders could be faster, but it is nice to see the full shape of the new house
