14.01.2022 A few of our members attended an information session this evening regarding horse and livestock management during emergencies. The session proved to be informative and very helpful. Those who attended learnt about how to look after their horses in bushfires and how to care for burnt horses. Some of the stories that were shared were quite confronting however, it definitely got us thinking about what we would do if we, and our treasured horses were at risk. We picked up a lot ...valuable advice so.given we are now in the fire danger season, we thought we would create a checklist to ensure our members and their horses (and others of course) are prepared for a bushfire. Have you done the following..? Organised where you might take your horses if a fire hits? Accepted that leaving your horse behind on your property when a fire is near may be your best or only option? Written your name and number inside your float in case it is left somewhere and you unexpectedly need to leave it? Got horse feed in your float ready to go at all times or have a bag in your tack/hay shed (such as a chaff bag) with a couple of biscuits of hay and a few smaller bags of pre-made hard feed ready to go? You may need to grab it and run! Downloaded the CFS App so that you’re well informed of fires? Downloaded the 000 App so that you can quickly quote a location number? Have your vets number in your phone? Made sure all gates on your property can open easily? Bought appropriate coloured markers so that you can write your phone number on your horse (in case you need to leave them and they become lost)? Have a small piece of material with your and your horses details written on it so that it can quickly be plaited through a piece of their mane (in case you need to leave them and they become lost)? Communicated to everyone living on your property that they are NOT to leave gates that lead to main roads open when a fire is near? Have aloe vera cream/gel and bute in your medical kit in case your horse is burnt? Have your PIC number handy? This is particularly helpful if you have no other way of proving a ‘lost’ horse belong to you. Have you joined the ‘Open Paddocks South Australia’ Facebook group? This group is made up of people who offer short term accommodation for your horses when fires hit. Trained your horses (especially young horses) to allow you to touch them under their tummies? This is often a place that gets badly burnt and needs regular treatment. Also - never leave halters or rugs on your horses when a fire is near! We hope you find some of these tips useful! Lauren Hood has a copy of the resources handed out at the session so contact her if you’d like a copy. A link to one of the resources used in the presentation is below: http://gofile.me/4bAsR/3h9YZJx9o A big thank you to the Kangarilla Progress Association, the Australia Red Cross and the City of Onkaparinga for organising this initiative.
