21.01.2022 Guest Speaker Tim Herrmann, Manager, Sustainable Soils DEWNR, will be presenting at 3.30pm. - How SA farmers saved their soils from ruin through collaborative remediation work. Tim Herrmann has worked in the area of soils, land management, landcare and natural resources management for over 30 years. He currently leads the Sustainable Soils team in the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR). The team is responsible for leading and developing strategi...es that protect and improve the health of soils that supports the growing of premium food in South Australia. Tim’s presentation will talk about how SA farmers saved their soils from ruin through collaborative remediation work. Farmers changed their farming systems and practices, and set out to repair the damage caused by erosion and protect the land for the future. There has been a steady decline in the incidences of soil erosion due to the adoption of improved farming practices such as pasture leys, contour banks, improved cereal varieties and use of fertilisers and trace elements. Tim will also talk about the advent of herbicides and improved machinery enabling the widespread adoption of no-till seeding methods and stubble retention practices. The landcare ethic amongst the farming community is alive and well and farmers are well aware of the importance of looking after their soil. Tim will talk about adoption of more sustainable farming practices that protect soils, and improve soil health and productivity. See more

The skills I pass on are all things we had to learn when we started and have proven over time, says Kentish. The course is conducted without working dogs but provides the tools to influence the way they and other tools such as horses and motorbikes are used. By the end of the course you will be able to identify the natural instincts of the stock and work with them, essentially letting them go to a given point rather than forcing them. See more

01.01.2022 Guest Speaker Gerard Roney, Advantage Feeder's Managing Director will be presenting at 10.30am. Supplementing stock and creep feeding will be covered during the 40 minute presentation, which references some of the many on-farm trials Gerard has overseen during the development of the Advantage Feeders product range. Trial results speak for themselves, demonstrating how supplementing stock via the three-way feed restriction system can produce heavier lambs and calves at higher stocking rates on green pasture, or on cheaper forage while feeding less concentrate.
